:Q-'.-,-' - .--- .fT-Z-A ',:4'.'-.-.5 - .'.- of -Z-'.-'l'.', 1-L-'-:-.o':'-J-7-.'..P.-.-.-.x-L-.-mg'1.5.3-, -'-W1 We, the Cliftonian staff of l95h, with members from grades 9 through 12, have decided it's high time our home town received a bit of applause S this year's annual is dedicated to OUR COM UNITY' In order to carry out the theme throughout the book we introduce you to Clif and Toni Springs, who have lived here for several years, and are proud of their hometown John Shekell, a Maryland pioneer, was the first settler of Sulphur Springs He pur chased three slaves wh1ch he later set free In 1800 he built h1s mansion The first church to be built 1n the town was St John's Episcopal Church in 1806 Also that year a hotel wh1ch served as a d1s pensary was built In 1807, our town changed 1ts name to Cl1fton Spr1ngs Durlng the next year, the first district school and the Methodist Episcopal Chirch were bu1lt Mr Foster, a Vermont rarmer, was born 1n 1821 During h1s college years he accumulated what was then a vast sum 5l0O0' On Sept 13, 1850, Dr Henry Foster founded the Clifton Sprlngs Water Cure, so called until July 22, 1867, when lt was changed to the Clifton Spr1ngs Sanitarium The Post Office was established in 1850 and 1n 1856 the St Agnes Roman Catholic Church was founded Clifton Spr1ngs became an incorporated v11lage on Aprll 8, 18 Dur1ng the year 1878, the annex to the San1tar1um was built and 1n 1880 the Pierce Pav1lion It was 1n 1892 that the Cl1fton Sprlngs Semlnary had accumulated great fame throughout the country The chief manufacturlng of the town was called s1mply the WCl1fton Springs Manufacturing Companyu, produc1ng f1fteen variet1es of t1nware art1cle The company had forty members The populatlon of Cl1fton Spr1ngs 1n 1892 was 1500 In l9LO, the populatlon of our town was lLl3, and ln 1951 lt had climbed to 1837, making it the largest village 1n 0ntar1o County Clifton Springs has two ra1lroads, f1ve churches, and a chapel at the San1tar1um The Central School enrollment 1S nearly 850 students now The Rebecca Lodge has just celebrated its h5th anniversary On January 29 1952, the off1c1al openlng of the new school gymnas1um was held The openlng of ghe new firehouse took place 1n January,l953 QQQ, I1 what was formerly called the Annex now 1ncludes many stores, and the Ontario National Bank Ellis M held Furn1ture Store and Funeral Home celebrated the off1cial opening of its new addltion on December 3 5, 1953 At present we have a Y M C A , a golf course, skatlng r1nk, and theater for recreation Cl1fton Springs has a taxi serv1ce and a police car Many high school students work in the Sanitarium after school nlghts and during vacation O O . .
