We can never fully express our sincere appreciation for all he has done for our school system, By unselfishly and willingly assisting us through our school years, he has helped draw the blueprint for our future lives, To show our infinite gratitude for all the time and effort he has devoted to the betterment of our school facilities and curriculum we shall do our best to make ourselves citizens of whom he can be proud Q QRMH I 763 H BOARD OF EDUCATION x xi wi: gs? . We have reached the apropos time to add the finishing touches to our monumentous project. Now we have ascended to the heights and are ready to reminisce over the well worn pathways we have traversed to attain our goal. We realize that the final step in a construction can prove the task to be a masterpiece or a failure. Looking ahead toward our more spacious pathways, we begin to see larger, more important blueprints being rolled for our future. Now our dreams turn from mere sketches to fruitful reality. How- ever, as we travel on, no matter how great the distance between us and our Alma Mater may be, our heart's memories shall be just a step away. .avi F I ,f.ff.A lv 9' ' wsawl PLANNED ACTIVITY v ENGLISH FRENCH I I SAFE DRIVING ,7- B .. ffx SQUID GEOMETRY .Jw Q CLINIC SCHOOL BUSES METAL SHOP W 1LLf'! Every such club and organization contributes to the molding of the greatest construction of all, the personality and character of a human being. The immeasurable benefits derived from taking active part in the development and furthering of these clubs more than com- pensate for the time and effort spent, It is in these clubs that future diversions are conceived, mutual interests allied, and sub- sequent friendships formed. Here, also, one gains a knowledge of management, procedure, good sportsmanship and the ability to express opinions concisely and persuasively. These, along with one of the fundamental concepts of our society, that co-operation is necessary for accomplishment, will serve in good stead in the future. A-. Clifton High School has always produced athletic teams of high calibre. Naturally, then, Clifton has had a high standing among other schools in athletic competition. The athletics we have participated in at Clifton High have given us a knowledge of competition and spirit. These, as well as other valuable factors, will prove to be useful to us in our plans for the future. A background of athletics can well fill out our Blueprint for the coming years. The sportsmanship, teamwork, and 'competitive spirit we have thus employed in school, have already been of value. What is more important, we shall keep them in our minds and find these lessons which we have learned on the field useful throughout our lives. . .T X N531 I I ' '-0 1fl1f0l'ff Jl' ' STRENGTH THROUGH EXPERIENCE AND SKILLED GUIDANCE ,v . The Clifton Mustangs proved to be most successful in their football campaign of l949. For the third time in four years, the boys emerged as victors of the Passaic Val- ley Conference. In conference games, the Clifton eleven maintained an undefeated record of five wins and no losses. ln outside tussles, they suffered two setbacks with only one win, giving them a 6 and 2 record for the season. However, these statistics of games won and lost do not give a complete picture of the team and the boys who were part of it. If we were able to move the calendar back to September 1949, we would hear or read numerous predictions and criticisms, concerning our team. The line, supposedly was green from end to end, but under the skillful and patient guidance of Joe Grecco, Thirty Bill Lennon and Floyd Porter, the Maroon and Gray set out to make the best of what they had. As the weeks progressed, so did the team. The line buckled down, and with the strong batkfield, they made a combina- tion that clicked perfectly. Unfortunately, there were some injuries to some of the key players. Among the casualties were Ronnie DeLorenzo, Steve Garabics, and Red Reuter, all of whom were kept out of action for part of the season. Joe Smith and Joe Mikula also missed three games because of iniuries sustained while defending the name and fame of the Clifton team, In spite of these difficulties the boys played with the confidence, ability, and true sportsmanship that is synonymous with the Clifton Mustangs. B - - unel950 Under the inspiring instruction of Coach Emil Bednarcik, the l95O edition of the Clifton Mustang basketball team compiled a fine record of l5 wins and 6 losses. They started the season off on the right foot by beating powerful Nutley and Montclair. lt was the fatal first game with Garfield, in which Clifton lost by the score 54-54, that threw the Mustangs off their pace. ln the next game, Thomas Jefferson, the only team in the state that went through the season undefeated, handed Clifton its sec- ond defeat, although the final outcome was not indicative of the actual contest. The loss of Sammarco and Foley in the first half on personals was largely responsible for the final result. Clifton went on to demonstrate their skill in the Valley Conference by re- Back row-standing-Ernest Schmidig, Bob Foley, Billy De Graff, Frank Pecci, Gene Kopec. Middle row - standing - Mr. Emil Bed- narcik, coach, Jack Sammarco, Peter Brask, cording victories of sizable margins over all the other members. The latter part of the season was marred by an upset defeat by Eastside and the loss of a well played game to Belleville, the Essex County Champs. Clifton closed out the season on a high note by walloping Kearny, the peren- nial Hudson County powerhouse. Our hoop- sters fell short of the fine regular season form in the Jamboree and the State Tour- nament and dropped close games to Gar- field in each. Although three of the starters will not be back to play again next year, the outlook is very promising. '74ari Although the '49 track team was only the second Clifton High School track team in many years, it has established Clifton as a strong contender for the Valley Confer- ence Crown. Eastside has dominated the Crown for several years, but Clifton is com- ing up fast. Last year Clifton displayed some of the best material in the Valley Conference and in the state. The team is under the direction of Coach James Grimes and Assistant Coach Joseph Grecco. With all this fine material placed to gether, Clifton won every game except Eastside, When the Valley Conference Title Meet was held, Clifton and Eastside were neckein-neck most of the way, but Eastside gained a lead over Clifton, and took the title. Clifton, however, took sec- ond place, with the other teams trailing far behind. Although many very good trackmen have graduated, Clifton High School's' Track Team is still as strong as ever, and is steadily growing stronger, looking to even brighter seasons in the future. For the first time a cross country team was organized to defend the honor of the Ma- roon and Gray. lt is no easy task to start from scratch and hope to uphold the name and fame of Clifton High, which is noted for its excellent sports teams. The boys who went out for this new sport had to work doubly hard to measure up, not only to the standards set by Clifton teams in other sports, but also to the keen competition of- fered by the teams in the Valley Conference League which have been organized for a long time. lt was only through the long, hard training under the able direction and patient guidance of the coach, Jim Grimes, that the Clifton boys were able to take second place in the Valley Conference. The wonder boys of the season were Ed- ward Vander Hey and Jim Morgan who shared top honors all season long. Their efforts were well rewarded when they placed in the Valley Conference Championship Meet at Eastside. The boys who received letters were Edward Vander Hey and Jim Morgan, who placed in all seven meets, Tom Pivorotto, who placed in five, John Van Tuyl, who placed in five, Leo Daly and Donald Bednarcik who placed in three. As harriers for the second year, Charles Bump, the captain, and John Van Tuyl each re- ceived certificates. Edward Vander Hey is the only member of the cross country team who will not be back to run again next year. Although he will be graduating with the class of June l95O, he leaves behind him a record of out- standing achievement and fine sportsman- ship so typical of Clifton High School activi- ties. nrt ii P1-sinful B As usual, Clifton High School's Baseball Team was a credit to the school, The team won eight out of eleven games, losing only to Nutley, Garfield, and Passaic. The pitching staff consisted of Eugene Pami, Louis Andreotta, Wendell lmhoffer, Peter Klein, Frank Niader, Joseph Ventura, and Ray Carroll. Backing up the pitchers was an excellent group of catchers. Billy De Graaf, who was only a freshman, had many of the starting roles, playing a wonderful game and show- ing promise of being a great catcher. The other catchers were Edward Riley and Charles Bochart who both did well, Clifton had a fine infield with Armand Buongiorna at first base, James Savasta at second base, George Pasterchick at third, and Harry Scofield at short stop. Buon- giorna, who had the highest batting average of the team, and Scofield played espe- cially well throughout the season. This in- field was back up by some good substitutes with Jack Sammarco and William Zien- kiewicz backing up first, and Walt Tencza and Zeke Ulrich holding the fill-in spot at second. Ronny Plaza was secondman at shortstop, and Ronald Debiak and Buddy Frank had a toss-up for fill-in at third. There was a heavy hitting outfield cone sisting of Frank Pecci, Kenneth Kurnath, Frank Baldanza, William Van der Wende, Alan Constantine, and Ted Pojednic. Pecci, Kurnath, and Baldanza drew most of the starting assignments, but Van der Wende also played quite often. Kurnath and Bal- danza were long ball hitters, while Van der Wende and Pecci consistently came through with base hits. At their first meeting the girls held an election of officers for the new term. Those elected were Georgia Carlson as President, Gloria Sammarco as Vice President, Maryrose Murphy as Sec- retary, Barbara Knight as Business Man- ager, and Beverly Klein as Publicity Man- ager. Plans for a Ping Pong Tournament were made, and the girls in the school were in- vited to compete. Also the organization held a roller skating party for the girls and their friends. Tryouts for the Girls' Basketball Team were held after school. With an excellent line-up Clifton opened its winter season, challenging parochial schools and alumni groups. At the beginning of February, a volley ball tournament was held among the girls of various section rooms. The annual G.A.A. dance was given the second Friday after the Easter vacation and proved to be a great success. A softball team was organized at the be- ginning of the spring season, and tourna- ments were held between the classes of the high school and of the Annex. Besides all these activities the G.A.A. sponsors many clubs including the Swim- ming Club, which meets regularly at the Y.W,C.A. in Passaic for an afternoon of fun, and also the Bowling Club, which meets at Central Alleys and engages in tourna- ments with other clubs and schools. They encouraged us when we faltered and aided us when we were unable to continue alone. Yet gradually we realized that each day we were becoming less dependent upon others but rather looking more into ourselves for the solution to our problems. This discovery awed us at first. Now we would be responsible for the fulfillment of our plans. However, we found that the task was not so difficult as it seemed. We learned that ambition and perseverance together would carry us a long way, Secure in this knowledge, we have all visualized our individual aims, and we shall work toward their attainment with courage and determination. .,,-,...-- ',,.v- ,,..-.1--W-fx..--vj ' -',g'..:il2 wwefwu 7464 M6 Glau Sfmmau To our class sponsors Miss Eleanor Pedersen and Mr William C Benken dart, we express our grateful thanks tor the time they have devoted to us Just as every building needs a strong support, so every class must have 'lling to support the group's sponsors wi activities MR- W iLUA MISS E LEANOR PEDERSEN Miss Pedersen and Mr Benkendort h ve given gracious assistance in every d They have a project we have attempte ith us to make our class As cooperated w of January l95O a successful one a class we express our appreciation for I the help they have given us Thirty-n ne PlLCl 0 BASS OF '48 BLUEPRINT 46 50 Placed on fule un a special vault at Clifton Hugh us a document sacred to the graduates of January l95O Thus document us Blue prunt 46 50 Its content-a plan by which thus class buult a foundation for uts future its composure four pages-one for each year spent un hugh school The class hustoruan unscrubed on these pages a condensed descruptuon of the Blue print s content and classufued ut thus FEBRUARY l946 JANUARY l947 Freshman' To us thus word was an enture future-a realuzatuon of dreams come true As we entered the Annex we knew not whether the sun was shunung or uf winter s wunds had chulled us We had only one thought only one destunatuon hugh school Eager to become a part of thus new under taking many enthusiastically joined clubs participated un the G O and also took part in other extra-curricular actuvutues offered by the school. Whether or not the individual plans his career and has enough initiative to carry it out is purely up to himselfg for careful planning creates a good beginning in mastering the trials and tribulations of life. An architect realizes that a successful creation can evolve only from careful planning, l-lis plans are drawn upon a bl ' t ueprin which serves as a guide for the completion of his creation. Similar to this, we, the graduating seniors of l95O, have had the blueprint of our lives begun at infancy, and the completion of this blueprint will be visible only after we are gone from this earth Now, as seniors, we find these blueprints before us as drafts upon the draw' b d f l' ing oar o ife. Many of us have chosen paths before usg the future remains mystic and unknown to all mortals. ..i.-li, GMM S 944.5075 THE STRUCTURE TAKES SHAPE i X Miss ELSE We, the June graduating class, express our sincere thanks to our sponsors, Miss Elsie Yanko and Mr. Hugh Tunison. They have worked zealously and unceasingly with only one purpose in mind, to serve us to the best of their ability, Whenever an unforeseen obstacle ap- peared, we were able to rely on them to give us their undivided attention and un- biased judgment. Very often this meant disregarding their own preferences and giv- ing up much of their valuable time. lt likewise took an infinite amount of their patience to bring about an amicable settle- ment of the minor misunderstandings that arose from time to time. lt was a pleasure to work with them, for only with their guidance were we able to accomplish the many tasks which we under- took. We shall remember them, not only for their service to us as advisors, but for their advice to us as friends. Sixty-four YANKO M68 Glen 8 MR -. fs?-if 1-.i?7rfg:', , .xr , . During our 3 l year we completed a Herculeon task the writing of our auto biographies Our teachers are still laugh ing at our sob stories a much needed cafeteria and a separate gym for the gurls The stadium wall was completed and a new field house was started ln the scholastic line under the guidance of Miss Morrell the Honor So ciety Eta Sigma was again established Many of our classmates found to their sur prise that they were elegible to take part in its activities As our 3 2 year progressed our class spirit grew and we entered upon many proy ects which the class hoped would give a boost to our sadly depleted treasury We sold movie tickets license plate brackets key chains pencils and candy We became known as the super salesmen of C H S When people saw us coming they auto matically reached for their wallets know ing that trying to resist was a lost cause At last we were senior draftsmen in our final year of high school We began our term with the election of class officers Allan Christensen veep Joan Carlough treasurer and Ruth Fisher s cretary After a quiet start things soon started popping again ln November our stadium field house was finished Our maiorettes and cheerleaders turned out in full regalia along with the band to aid in the dedication of the field house by school and city officials With the aid of our very capable and successful GO president Dave Blackman many changes come about The long awaited moment came when we rnoved into mixed sections Also in preparation for the use of the cafe in the new wing a new lunch system was installed in which every one ate at the same time Between the clang bang of the construc tion worker s hammers and the buzzing of their drills the art students worked on post ers The winning masterpiece was to be used as a design for the billboard to be erected on the highway to designate the C H S campus to the passers by The con test was extremely difficult to yudge be cause of the many fine entrees At the end of January we sadly bade farewell to the 4 2 s at a commencement dance All who attended this affair mar velled at the gym which was originally and expertly decorated in a surprisingly short time The energetic committee entered the gym after a basketball game which we won bv the way and took down the bleachers swept the floor put up the centerpiece at tached streamers all around set up the bandstand adjusted the microphones and pasted posters on the wall in two hours time great deal of credit for their efforts which helped make the dance a tremendous suc cess With the coming of the ldes of March also came Senior Chorus After months of discord we finally mastered our songs and sang them like professionals All we can say is that Mrs Koepke certainly has patience' Pleasure was put aside for a while as we spent our week ends working on the year book Articles were written and re written until at last they were accepted We were haunted by the sounds Have you handed your proofs back or When will you have the article finished? When we received our yearbooks we were glad to see that our work was not in vain Our stay in C H S swiftly came to an end and thanks to the expert advice of the ex ecutives faculty counselors and sponsors our stay was a very happy and successful one Now that we have laid the foundations for our Blueprints we are going out indi vidually into the world to complete the plans for the structure of our lives I - . - .
