E. BACON, III Captain Barton E. Bacon III was born in San Diego California. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1959 and entered the United States Navy as an Aviation Officer Candidate in Pensacola, Florida. He received his commission with the Aviation Class of 1961 a nd served tours of duty at Memphis, Saufley, and Whiting Naval Air Stations, and aboard the carrier USS YORKTOWN (CVS-10). Captain Bacon graduated from Submarine School in 1963. He subsequently served in five San Diego based submarines: USS REDFISH (SS-395), USS SEGUNDO (SS-398), USS VOLADOR {SS-490), USS SALMON (SS-573) as Executive Officer and USS TROUT (SS-566) as Commanding Officer. During this period he completed eight deploy- ments to the Western Pacific. Under his command, USS TROUT was awarded the Battle Efficiency E . Captain Bacon has served on the Staffs of the Chief of Naval Operations, COMSUBGRU FIVE, COMSUBRON THREE, Chief of Naval Personnel, the Commandant, Thirteenth Naval District, and in OPNAV in the Department of the Navy Plans and Policy, and as Commanding Officer, Submarine Training Facility, San Diego, California. Upon leaving the USS CLEVELAND, Captain Bacon will report to COMSUBGROUP FIVE, in San Diego, California. Captain Bacon is married to the former Mary C. Mutscheller of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and resides in the Rancho Bernardo community of San Diego, California. COMMANDING OFFICER CAPT J. A. BYERS Captain John A. Byers, a native of Bellvue, Pennsylvania, graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1962, and received his commission through the NROTC Regular Program. Captain Byers attended a six month CIC ASAC School at Glynco, Georgia, before reporting to USS INGRAHAM (DD 694), where he served as CIC Officer until August of 1964. He then attended Destroyer School in Newport, R.I., and upon graduation in February of 1965, served as Operations Officer of USS K. D. BAILEY (DDR 713). After a course of instruction at Computer Programming School in Washington, DC, he served as a computer programmer and ADP Plans Officer for the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, in Hawaii for three years. In July of 1970, he moved back, to the East Coast to serve on the pre-commissioning crew as the first Communications Officer of the USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC 20). Captain Byers returned to Washington DC in November of 1972 and served as ADP Plans Officer for the Defense Communications Agency until reporting to the USS NEWPORT (LST 1179) to the NATO Staff of Commander Naval Striking and Support Forces, Southern Europe, as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Communications. He served as Commanding Officer, USS SPARTANBURG COUNTY (LST 1192) from March 1981 to January 1983. He attended the first Post Command Course at the Naval War College in the Spring of 1983 and reported for duty to OPNAV as the Head of Communications Plans, Policy, Resources and Readiness Branch. In April 1985, he received orders to report as Commanding Officer, USS CLEVELAND (LPD-7). Captain Byers ' decorations include two Meritorious Service Medals, two Joint Service Commendation Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal. He holds a Master ' s Degree in Government Administration from George Washington University and is a proven Sub-specialist in Communications. EXECUTIVE OFFICER J. J. DAY CDR Commander Day, a native of Fort Lee, New Jersey, graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1970 and received his commission through the NROTC Regular Program. CDR Day reported to USS TERREBONNE PARRISH (LST-1156) as Assistant First Lieutenant in June of 1970 He then reported to USS GEORGE K. MACKENZIE (DD-836) in November of 1971 where he performed the duties of DCA, MPA, CICO and EMO. In January of 1974 he reported to COMDESRON 7 and assumed the duties of Operations Officer. After a course of instruction at SWOSCOLCOM in Newport, RL, he reported aboard USS CHARLES P. CECIL (DD-835) as Operations Officer in March of 1977. His next assignment came in November of 1979 aboard USS TARAWA (LHA-1) as First Lieutenant. In September of 1982 he reported to COMNAVSURFPAC as Assistant Force Ops and Plans Officer. After attending SWOSCOLCOM in February of 1984, CDR Day reported aboard the USS CLEVELAND {LPD-7) in April of 1984 as Executive Officer. Commander Day ' s decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, two Navy Achievement Medals, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal (3 start), and the National Defense Medal.
