Tigers At Sea 94 Welcome Home! When the Steamin ' Cleve returned to her home- port in San Diego July 3, 1980, another chapter in her proud history was turned. During her eighth deploy- ment in Western Pacific waters, Cleveland ' s operation- al evolutions saw her playing host to 4,400 combat- ready Marine Corps personnel, as well as 238 Navy, 212 Army and 40 Republic of the Philippines military men. The Cleve and her crew should also boast of having lifted over 27 million tons of military hardware and stores in carrying out her commitment. It had indeed been a long, arduous six month cruise. Cleveland ' s crew of nearly 450 men, working in over 30 different professions, had shared in the sweat and strain that accompanies any deployment period. The toil and routine, however, was broken by visits to 11 ports-of-call which included Guam, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and the Republic of the Philippines. This cruisebook is therefore dedicated to USS Cleve- land ' s crew who made WestPac ' 80 happen! Lt. G. Shera Editor, Photographer And Part-time Doctor Cruisebook Staff HM2 J. Kinney (saluting above left) was relieved by Capt. K.R. Siegel during a Change of Com- mand ceremony on the flight deck. Taking part in the July 18 ceremony were Capt. R.P. Lenehan, ComPhibRon Three (above, lower left), and LT R.H. Adair, CHC, the ship ' s Chaplain. The ship ' s crew, as well as, guests, friends and dignitaries were in attendance. The bell was placed aboard LPD-7 and a brief ceremony honoring the occasion occured in November 1979, conducted by retired Navy Capt. John M. Kennaday. Capt. Kennaday, as a young of ficer, reported aboard the cruiser in 1928. After a five-year search, he found the bronze bell in the Western Reserve Historical Society ' s museum in Cleveland, Ohio, and began a letter- writing campaign that resulted in the bell ' s placement aboard the Steamin ' Cleve .
