'Ania Foreword In presenting the pictorial record of the year's activities, the Beacon Staff feels that, since Time has been chosen for the theme of the 1959 issue, a chronological arrangement of events is appropriate. This has necessitated a somewhat drastic change from the traditional format used for so many years. However, while the chronological presentation may be new to Cleveland it is an accepted method of yearbook arrangement, and the Staff is confident that its contribution to the development of the theme will justify its adoption in the opinion of the student body. Audio-Visual does, that's who! Even though mistakes can happen, the A.V. is always behind the scenes to see that the many Cleveland programs run as smoothly as possible. Members learn the correct operation of the various sound and lighting equipment the club pro- vides ior school use. In addition, A.V. operates movie projectors, tape recorders, and film strip pro- jectors. The school receives a great service from the A.V. members who are willing to give up study halls to serve their school. Distributive Education In which A-period class do the late-rising seniors always look wide-awake and eager to learn? .The D.E. Club starts the day for some thirty seniors who receive class instruction in the art of retailing. The purpose of the D.E. The year has seen a monetary gift go to CARE-representative of the Key Club in ac- tion. Also, the club, in conjunction with other Saint Louis Key Clubs, undertook the project ot outiitting , a Boys' Town basketball team. This meant raising money, and a Y.M.C.A. party provided the necessary funds. Fun and enjoyment are not lacking in the Key I Club. The campaigning Key Clubbers sent Herbert 1 Lehner to the District Convention and helped elect him to the office of Lt. Governor of the Missouri- Arkansas District. This year Bill Haag and Dan Paxton are running for Governor and Secretary re- spectively. On deck is the annual Key Club banquet which will mark the lirst and last banquet for some Key Clubbers. Lettermen's Club The purpose of the Lettermen's Club is to pro- mote higher standards in scholarship and sportsman- ship. To attain this goal the Lettermen's Club encour- ages those activities which stress teamwork and co-operation among all Clevelandites. By creating a sense of unity among the faculty, the students, and the athletes, the Lettermen's Club believes it can do much to develop and maintain an outstanding school spirit. The privilege of belonging is of course limited to those who have earned a varsity letter in a sport approved by, or which receives benefits from, the Saint Louis Public High League. If you qualify, you are urged to submit your application for membership. The more members the club has that much more of the goal has been accomplished. Pep Club Meeting on alternate Mondays in room 113, the Pep Club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Briggson, promotes school spirit and helps arrange pep ses- sions before and after that big game or important meet. Through the sale of Cleveland Buttons, Orange and Blue shakers, and Cheer Books, the Pep Club keeps alive school spirit and traditions. Make your- self heard at the Pep Club and at the games. 57 Biotic Trail Club ROW ONE: Io Ann Farley, Madonna Pawlowski, Becky Io Heltzell, Chandler Kennedy. Webster - Hayne Club A roaring progressive moment which has been attempted in years gone by, this year, has ended in success. This year the immortal Webster Hayne De- bating Society not only has instilled a new high in quality in the use of parliamentary law but also has mass participation in its formal debates. We have much food for argument and we are using it, as is witnessed in the high percentage of participation by members in regional tournaments in debating, ex- tempt speaking, and ir1 interpretive reading. Cleve- land's entrants have walked out with many firsts this year. We're mighty happy on the fine tradition established more than forty ,years ago. 59 Future Teachers of America FALL SPRING Alan Zeller ..,,... ...., P resident ...... But, right here within the walls of the Red Castle is an organiza- tion call Teens for Christ. The main purpose of the club is to help boys and girls acquire Christian fellowship and inspira- tional guidance. Started in the fall of 1956 it has grown to a membership of more than thirty students. Many other public high schools in the city and county have Bible Clubs like Cleveland's. How can you get students up in the mornings to attend the 8:00 o'clock, Wednesday morning, meetings of the Math Club? This appears to have been solved, for the club boasts a growing membership. Reports on a mathematician and his accomplish- ments are a part of each meeting's agenda. A series on the history of mathematics helps the members to better understand the development of the number system. On December 22, the Club held an unusual Christmas party to which the Cleveland administra- tors and mathematics teachers were invited. Several projects were displayed. Among these were a Geni- ac, Cycloid. and Chords of Equal Time. The party had the traditional Christmas tree, but the Math Club's Geome-tree was decorated with geometrical- ly shaped ornaments. The purposes of this group of dedi- cated dads are to support sports- manship among all athletes at Cleveland: to encourage good re- lationships and more understand- ing among the family, students, and faculty: and to urge more students to participate in athletics. To accomplish this, the Dads' Club sponsors many activities and projects throughout the school year. Two Lettermen's banquets are held each year, at which both boys and girls who have partici- pated in athletics receive recogni- tion. The Annual Card Party is held each fall and of course there's the Annual Spring Carnival, an event to which everyone looks for- ward. Did you ever stop to think that Cleve- land has a squad whose season lasts from September to Iune? It sounds like a long season, but the cheerleading squad accepts it cheerfully with a big smile. From the first gridiron kickoff through the basketball buzzers and pep sessions to the Public League track meet and State Baseball games, these peppy girls are lead- ing the Dutch cheering section in songs and cheers. Earlier they had given their all to beat Roosevelt for a three-way tie for first place. A radical change in the swimming line-up had hoped to bring Cleveland the tie for first place, but the Dutch were over-powered by the strength of the Roosevelt Team. At State, Gary Lutker broke his own 100 yard Butterfly record of l:3.5 to get a new one of 1:2. He also took a second in the 150 yard Individual Free Style. The relay team of Hank Hollenberg. Carl Berryman, Dennis Iohnson, and Tom Sandvoss took fourth place honors. Cleveland wound up sixth in over all competition. At the Beaumont Decathlon, Gary Lutker swam almost every race on the heels of Don Schnuer of Ladue, and finally landed second place honors totalling 2750 points to Schnuer's 2800, Sf: ', Q Nfl!!! .Sy 3 e 2 E 1. Our seniors have given their time for four years to gain knowledge and an education which they cannot lose. A man, however. is not rich in what he possesses, but he is rich if he wisely uses his possessions. Therefore, it is the wish and the hope of the Cleveland High School faculty that our graduates will so use their knowledge gained here as to bring success and happiness to themselves and a measure of glory to their Alma Mater. EARL IANSEN Dutch Blank U. City In Final The Diamondmen gave Cleveland its first State Baseball Championship by defeating University City 2-0 in a tense final. U. City threatened the Dutch lead several times. Bruce Mills held the Indians to only four hits and was the outstanding pitcher of the tournament. Fred Braun and Mills scored the only runs. Braun and Chuck Hasser each got two hits as Hasser compiled a .545 averag-e which was a hit shy of the state record. Coach Carl Nebel guid- ed the Dutch through a 6-1 Sikeston victory and a 19-8 Ioplin victory in earlier contests on their march to capture the State final. Against Sikeston, Iohn Dyn hit a needed double to bring in two insurance runs. Against Ioplin, the Nebelmen scored nine runs in the first inning. Thirteen men batted before the side was retired. Rich Pilas held Ioplin to seven hits. Chuck Hasser led the scoring attack with four hits in five trips to the plate. A home run by Hasser totaled seven runs batted in for the day. Dutch Capture P. H. l.. Crown Even though they lost a fine battle to Roosevelt 6-2, the Dutch managed to edge the Rough Riders from a tie for first place with Southwest and Beau- mont by continuing their season undefeated. The Dutch ended the season with a 21-1 record. With Coach C. Nebel and Coach E. Iansen at the helm, the pitching staff of Bruce Mills C8-ll, Rich Pilas K6-Ol, and Al Stallings K5-Ol contributed greatly to the team's success. The thinclads won all their meets defeating such stalwarts as Maplewood and Ferguson. For the first time in many years the team has had field men to compare with the fine material Cleveland is known to have had in the past. Many times Cleveland men were fighting each other for first place. Boyd Bender and Ray Wichman ran consistently against each other to the wire. Bender tied the city record lor the 220 yd. dash, but he was 1, . not the only standout. The team of Eisenhauer, Collier, Charlton, and Halls broke the Relay Carnival record in shot-put. Cleveland placed more men in Field Day than they have in a long time. The Dutch completely dominated the shot-put event with Charlton winning the Iunior Division and Collier edging Eisenhauer by a mere three inches for the Senior Division and iirst place. Four made the All-State squad: Bender, Koch, Eisenhauer, and Collier. The team's success depended greatly upon the coaching and guidance of Coach Pete Mercurio and his assistant, Mr. Bob Beckerle. iv I67 C eve-land Time - eepers DAVE PELANT Orange and Blue Photographer I-'RED BRAUN Orange and Blue Editor.
