N' 6 J' ffff American ballads are parophrases of the old English ballads brought to their new homes by the colonists from their native land, They tell in story form of the new surround- ings in which the early settlers found them- selves. They were popular with our pioneer peoples and they remain so to this day. While many other types of music have come into vogue from time to time, the ballad singer with his guitar has never been entirely re- placed. Realizing that, since the time of the Pilgrims, Americans have demonstrated their originality and ingenuity in all fields, creating new and different cul- tures, and that the descendants of these hearty colonists have excelled commendably in the field of music, bringing forth melodies and rhythms distinctly and intensely American, radiating the characteristics repre- sentative of our land and our land alone, we of the Staff have chosen "American Music Through the Years" as our theme, and it is our sincere hope that this edi- tion will be favorably received by the student body.
