Among the major projects that received the Council's support were the Coro- nation of the Football Queeng the arrangements for College Nighty the business management of the operetta, Follow Thru g the mock election for the presidency of the United States and the very successful political campaigns for the various candidates before the final ballotingg and the prepa- ration of Christmas stockings for War Veterans at Christmas time. The sale of basketball passes, which were also used for admission to the annual Alumni Basketball Game and the installation of the 1952-1953 Basketball Maids, set a new record at Cleveland this year. Another project which re- ceived the Council's support was the acquisition of much-needed laundry equipment for the Athletic Department through the sale of Christmas tree light bulbs. The Council inaugurated a new plan for service awards for pupils who assist with work in the office and other departments of the school. The Student Council wishes to thank the Faculty and Student Body for the very helpful co-operation which they have received in all of their undertakings dur- ing the past fall. Cleveland High School, as Well as others, points to its traditions with great pride, and properly so. As We walk through our halls and see the pictures of former great teams, see the trophies in our cases, are enthralled by the music of our choral groups: are aroused by our cheerleaders at games, experience the elections of Student Council members and class officers, live the many happy, and sometimes not so happy, experiences in classes-it is then that We are able to learn, appreciate and enjoy the fine traditions of Cleveland High School. But of what many of us are unaware is that We, in our sojourn here, were part of and helped to add to those traditions. For the many fine things the 1953 Seniors have done the school is duly grateful and it is the wish of us all that the fine spirit, which has helped you and of which you were a part, will continue and that future classes will point with pride to your many accomplishments. 16 ', f- .ff . f , - U. vw,-f X , : , J Mx fl., , -5, - T 'X '.,g.' Under the able direction of Editor, Mike O'Keefe, and Associate Editor, Con- nie Claiborne, with the invaluable assistance of Ierry Kassing, Pat C'Connor, Ken Gilbert, Barbara Craig, and the other members of the staff, the timely theme, the Louisiana Purchase, was chosen and the general plan for the presentation of the year's activities put in order. The Art Staff, led by Bar- bara Wiegers and Ioy Lee Heil, have made a contribution to be appreciated by all Clevelandites by their excellent execution of the theme of the book in the division pages and other art work. The Business Manager, Dale Hartig, and his assistant, Benny Robison, in addition to shouldering the financial worries attendant on their duties, scheduled all group pictures. The Student Council directed a most effective publicity campaign which kept the circular tion up to its usual high mark. The staff is most sincere in its desire to thank the Faculty and Student Body for the kindly help rendered them in their attempt to fulfill a big but pleasant task: a lasting record of the highlights of the year's activities. Under the capable direction ot Mr. lames Elliott, the Beacon Art Statt has attempted to portray letterson's own conception ot the purchase, Napoleon's attitude, the delegation ot the exploration of the territory to Merriwether Lewis and George Rogers Clark, the rigorous struggle of the early pioneers, and lastly the advance ot progressive ideas in the territory from its acquisition to the present day. The Art Staff headed by Barbara Vtfiegers and loy Heil chose a textured paper with Lithographic crayon to execute the drawings. 67 jk? Ofallge CII!!! gf!!! The school newspaper is an excellent instrument of education. Editing a newspaper teaches the students how to express themselves. lt also gives them a good foundation in composition writing. The Orange and Blue, the school newspaper, is published bi-weekly by the students of the Advanced Composition Classes. The students do every- thing but print the paper. They write the material, compose the headlines, and arrange the copy on the pages. The Orange and Blue has endeavored to maintain the highest literary standards possible. The Orange and Blue was cwarded a rating ot Excellent by the Missouri lnterscholastic Press Association tour years in succession and last year it rated Excellent in the National Scholastic Press Competition. 68 we Ufange ana! There seems to be some type of stage activity going on at all times. lt started last fall With the Coronation of the Football Queen. The theme was the Streets of Paris, and the romantic and pleasure-loving atmosphere of the famous city Was brought out by portraying the Eifel Tower, the Arch of Triumph and many other well- known landmarks. Follow Thru was the Operetta for l952. Surprising and breathtaking were the adjectives used to describe the Charleston scene done with a surrealist effect. Next came the Christmas program with cherubic faces on the back-drop. The simple yet effective three-dimension cross was most appropriate for the Easter Program. A patriotic background was affected for Memorial Day. Besides settings for the Various programs, the Artcrafters design the rrfottos for the graduation classes. Ioy Lee Heil and Barbara Wiegers were the chief designers for the past school year. 72 Kham!! Wudic The Choral Music Department, under the direction of Miss Charlotte Louise Mann, continues to hold the high standard of achievement for which it has long been known. Even though administrative changes in the school curriculum appeared as though they might lower the enrollment in the De- partment and thereby curtail its activities, Choral Music has managed to afford both the school and the community equal, if not better, cultural produc- tions for their enjoyment than in the past. Besides excellent training in the techniques of vocal music, the-five Well- graded choirs, into which the department is divided, offers pupils instruction in music appreciation, co-operation in Working with others, and a better under- standing of people. This training not only helps the pupils in their social life while in school but also has priceless carry-over values in later life. 73 Canal! mudic Although the Work done in the Senior and A Cappella Choirs is similar and most advanced, the A Cappella is the performing choir. it meets before school and carries the responsibility of representing Cleveland at perform- ances given in and around the city. Through its excellent training, superior techniques, and praiseworthy presentation, it has become Well known through- out the metropolitan area. The lunior and Intermediate Choirs afford instruc- tion and experience in the basic principles of choral music and constitute the training ground for the advanced choirs. All Cleveland pupils are encouraged to elect choral music at some time during their high school careers even though they may not be able to com- plete the full extent of the courses offered. The hard work to be encountered is amply compensated for by the equal if not greater pleasure which always follows upon Worthwhile accomplishment and the knowledge of having given unselfishly of ones self. 74 4 gg .fd Calalae a 64000 Row l: Row 2 Row 3 Row 4 Karolyn Grantham, Doris Davis, Iudith Pentland, Loretta Burridge, Arlene Siemens, Jacqueline Moore, Iune King, lean Gilsinn, Charlotte Frankenreiter, lean Wessel, Charlotte Politte, Dana McNulty, lacqueline Bertsch, Sharon Luebert, Vivian Reichlein, Marjorie Cannon, Bonnie Carol Moore, loan Kathryn Fernandez, Charles Bradley, Gerald Beck, Lawrence Knopfel, Barbara Hames, Ruth Huber, Myrtle Ann Huntze, leannette Kollinger, Ioyce Bergmeier, Eileen Wright, Mardi Willeson, Sandra McCoy, Barbara McGuire, lane Iustice, Velma Eudy, Shirly Boycourt, Ioan Schimmel, Marilyn Beck- mann, IoAnne Bingaman, Lee Hofmann, Roy Dummerth, Dale Favier, Charles Deeba, Nellie Greene, Ioan Krause, Constance Fedak, Norma Ebert, Sally Pruett, Betty Hughes, Carol Barnes, Dolores Yaseyich, Mary Burton, Shirley Logan, Shirley Matthews, Shirley Meyer, Frances Hankins, Virginia Iones, George Pieper, Charles Marsh, Glen Kleine, Kenneth Syberg, William Pietrowski, Charles May, Edward Cross, Warren Hertel, Thomas Dela Roche, Ronald Nadler, Donald Ferber, Kenneth Ogle, Donald Winzen, Ronald Mayer, Harry Delkeskamp, William Iaudes, Donald Hartig, George Harper, Ioseph Thess. Wudic When Lewis and Clark began their exploration of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, they never dreamed that the land they were exploring would some day compose thirteen states of the world's greatest nation. ln a like manner, the St. Louis Board of Education never realized what a worthwhile educational project they were initiating when they granted a public grade school teacher, Mr. Armstrong, permission to teach music in the public schools in the year 1844. Since that time instrumental music in all of the schools in the St. Louis Public School System has grown with leaps and bounds. Here at Cleveland the story of instrumental music follows almost the identical pattern of that of the School System. From a humble beginning the interest in instrumental music has grown so that now there are no less than six organized groups at Cleveland. They include the Concert Band, Orches- tra, Second Band, Intermediate Band, Beginning lnstrumental group, and the Novelty Dance Band. During the past year the accomplishments of the above groups have brought much satisfaction to their leader, the Director of lnstrumental Music, Mr. George V. Doren. The praise-winning performances of the lnstrumental Music Department, to mention a few, were the Coronation Program, several parades, music at the football games, Graduation Exercises, Easter Sunrise Service at Tower Grove Park, the Operetta, Pep Sessions in the Auditorium, Concerts for the students and the P.T.A., and several school dances and func- tions. Regardless of whether you are a Freshman or a Senior, there is room for you in the lnstrumental Music Department at Cleveland High School. 80 0llCel't gall! The subjects discussed by this enthusiastic group are as many and varied as are the interests stimulated by the multi-faceted environ- ment of the modern high school pupil. Last but not least adherence to the very latest parliamentary procedures trains the participants and the audience in the practice of those valuable techniques too often neglected in their formal class work because of limited time. Since its purpose is to promote school spirit, the Pep Club has cheered at all the basketball and football games and arranged numerous pep sessions. This season, the Pep Club bought megaphones for the cheerleaders so that the cheering section could hear the cheers when they were announced. Pep Club pins, of which everyone is very proud, were issued for the first time this year to the members. Next fall, the Pep Club plans to buy a Cleveland banner to display at the games. The Club Will give a dance at school early next term to raise money for the banner. 86 Q, Cm Row lz Sandra Garner, Beverly Barton, Ruth Kuerz, Iudy Schaeier, Ioyce Garrett, Iacklyn Edwards, Ramona Shrum, Corinne Stefiens, loan Raffel, Nancy Nicholosn, Shirley McCusker. This year they decided to be very ambitious and, after giving a few bake sales to raise money, presented a dinner to both the football and the basketball team. The girls look forward to giving these spreads and claim that they have more lun preparing them than the teams do eating them. This year, since Cleveland had a championship basketball team, Cle Cuks really went to work and put on an extra special celebration for them. A new activity, which the Cle Cuks have enjoyed immensely, is making regular visits to an orphans' home. The Cleveland Angling and Casting Club CC.A.C.C.D, long an organization in good standing at Cleveland, is still quite popular throughout the school. Excellent films on fishing are shown at nearly every other meeting. Fly tying and other operations advantageous to par- ticipants in the Waltonian sport are occasionally on the agenda. McBride, scoring in every quarter, bested the fight- ing Dutchmen, who could find pay-dirt only in the second and fourth quarters. Cleveland's touchdowns came as a result of speedy drives, climaxed by passes from quarterback Ken Miles to fullback, loe Alsheimer, and end, Les Potter. An improved showing was made by Cleveland against the Statesmen of Web- ster Groves on this wet afternoon. The Sweeneymen scored in the first quarter on a plunge by Alsheimer, but Webster came back strong with touchdowns in the following two quarters. Although hindered by a muddy field which made passing almost impossible, Cleveland re- fused to play dead. With only sec- onds remaining in the last quarter, Cleve- land scored on a double reverse, with Crawford carrying. Final score: Dutch- men, 125 Statesmen, 12. lnvading the stronghold of the Belle- ville Maroons, Cleveland again found themselves on the short end of the score, 7-O. The first and Second quarters were highly contested and scoreless, but in the third quarter a Maroon end picked up a blocked punt and raced 20 yards for the goal. The Dutchmen were twice within the 10-yard marker, once in the first quarter and again in the fourth, but failed to score. je .SZCLJOH The Dutchmen made their league debut and won a decisive victory over the Tigers of Soldan-Blewett. ln the first quarter Cleveland promptly marched to a touchdown. A 77-yard drive was topped by Lorance with a run from the l7-yard line. The Sweeneymen then failed to make the extra point after a 15-yard penalty nullified the good con- version. Cleveland again came to life in the fourth quarter when they marched 73 yards for the marker, with Crawford carrying. The kick was bad and the score stood at l2-U. Cleveland's inability to make the ex- tra point was the deciding factor in the second game of season's play as the Dutch eleven lost a heartbreaker to a powerful McKinley team, 13-l2. ln the first quarter Crawford fumbled, but Reeb recovered and went over for the goal. The kick was bad and the Dutchmen led, 6-0. McKinley came back strong in the third quarter with two TD's, one on a 30- yard run by Windegger on an inter- cepted pass from Ken Miles. Cleveland came back with a 51-yard drive, sparked by a double reverse and a handoff which was good for the goal, Miles carrying. Cleveland battled to a 6-6 tie with Roosevelt in a game which the Dutchmen were favored to win. After having the ball deep in their own territory early in the game, Cleveland cashed in on a blocked kick and scored on one play. -6321 N9 if Q53 ..7,, 1. Ron Westbrook, 2. Mike Goyda, 3. The Rough Riders, not to be denied, ad- vanced the ball inside the Cleveland 20 as the third quarter ended. Working the ball to the two, they scored on a line plunge. The Sweeneyrnen came back with a late drive in the fourth quarter but lost the ball on downs and the score re- mained 6-6 When time ran out. The quest for the Public High League Title seemed just about over as Beaumont ran all over Cleveland in an important game. ln the first quarter the Dutchmen found themselves ahead for the only time in the contest, 7-5, When Lorance scored on a 28-yard pass play from Miles. Pot- ter booted the extra point, Cleveland's first of the season. Beaumont scored ct single TD in the second quarter, but roared on to take a lead in the second half, a lead Which Cleveland could not overtake. The Dutchmen made a valiant effort to capture the contest in the final quarter when they put over two touch- downs. Two passes by Eury to Goyda accounted for one TD. The second came when McGovern recovered a Beaumont fumble and ran to the one, Where Eury lugged the ball over. The 40-l9 score was a result of five fumbles, four by Cleveland. jk? .SZCIAOI1 Victory ogoin eluded the hustling Dutchmen os they bowed to the South- west Longhorns ond dropped into fifth ploce. Several weeks after the varsity squad had begun practice the B team reported to Coach Gandt for their initial session. For several weeks the boys exercised without equipment to physically condition them for the League schedule to follow. ln all, over forty boys, term four or less, made up the squad. After a few days of substantial body strengthening calisthenics and running the group numbered slightly less than forty. By the time of the first game, the squad was ready for Soldan-Blewett. However, that game was cancelled and forfeited to Cleveland because Sol- dan-Blewett could not play on the date set. The l952 season gave the Iunior Dutchmen their first non-conference game in the past three years. They played the junior varsity squad of St. Louis University High School in Forest Park. After a rough season schedule with the other B teams of the Public High League, the squad developed into a well-orientated group in the funda- mentals of football. With this valuable experience, they are ready for a fine season of Varsity play with Coach Sweeney and are likely to well represent Cleveland on the gridiron field of play in future years. 106 amz, aff A Former Cleveland Athlete Who Led the Dutchmen to Their First State Basketball Championship. 107 1952-1953 Z?mL-dia!! Picked by sportswriters to have a mediocre season, the 'Orange and Blue from the south side surprised the experts with the speed and a style of play that reached whirlwind force as the season neared the end. Cleveland brought a 2l-4 record and a streak of eleven straight victories to the Class A Tournament at Brewer Field House. ln their initial encounter of the state classic, Cleveland eliminated a classy team from Springfield, 66-54. Springfield just couldn't keep up with the Dutch- men's fast break and fine play. The corporation of Mills and Kaestner alone tallied 46 points, Mills with 24 and Kaestner with 22. Not only did Cleveland win, but an important question had been answered. Arnie Kaestner proved that he could hit in the clutch and this was definitely encouraging. For it was thought by many that if Kaestner could hit in the pinch, Cleveland had a good chance to win out. Cleveland's 53-4l triumph over Beaumont in the second round was a real thriller which kept the crowd on its feet throughout much of the game. The Dutchmen leading, 31-l8, at the half, were in front by only eight points, 40-32, as the final quarter began. A nip-and-tuck battle all the way, Beaumont tried hard but just couldn't catch the Dutchmen as they went on to victory. Individual scoring was evenly distributed, Kaestner getting 12, Mills ll and McDonnell and I-lerrscher lO each. Thus the Dutchmen had succeeded in cracking the jinx of being knocked out in the second round, something which had plagued them on their two recent visits to the State Tournament. Now was to come the acid test-Webster Groves. 110 we .xdhermafk of a jhfifer Undoubtedly the most thrilling game of tournament play, Cleveland's fighting Dutchmen beat the previously undefeated Webster Statesmen, 59-54, to knock them from the lofty perch that they had held all season. Webster, trailing, 18-14, at the quarter, surged back into the lead, and it wasn't until the third quarter that Cleveland caught the Statesmen a 4l-4l on Les Potter's shot. Bob Mills then made good on two free throws and Cleveland took over at 43-41 to maintain an edge for the balance of the contest. High men for the Dutchmen were Bob Mills, who had 24 points, and Arnie Kaestner, with 17, and they were lifted higher when the enthusiastic Cleveland fans carried the boys off the floor. Yes, it had been accomplished. Cleveland had beaten the toughest team in the state and a team which had whipped them twice previously in season play. Many were ready to concede the championship to Webster, but Cleveland, with a determination to win, wouldn't quit and this fighting spirit paid off. They won the game, a game which won them the championship right there. The final game seemed easy as compared to the game they had played the previous night. Cleveland was in command throughout the contest. Trailing at the quarter, 10-9, the Dutchmen broke the game wide open in the second quarter as they picked up l6 points while the lunior Bills were getting only six. A 20-point third quarter enabled the Dutchmen to widen the gap to 45-27, and the teams just about traded points in the final quarter. The final score was 62-46. High men for the Champs were Bob Mills, who poured in 30 points, and Arnie Kaestner, who scored l8. 111 Ute .Slam The '52-'53 Cleveland Dutchmen completed a terrific season and reached the pinnacle of suc- cess this year by winning Cleveland's first State Basketball Championship at Brewer Field House, Columbia. Again under the leadership of win- ning Earl lansen, the Dutch Cagers, paced by Captain Bob Mills, topped a streak of l5 straight victories with a win over the lunior Billikens to dethrone them of the state crown they had won in 1952. Cleveland ended up with a record of 25 vic- tories and were stopped only four times, but by three schools - Webster twice, Beaumont and Roosevelt. In the opening game of the season, lansen's Dutchmen avenged last year's Alumni defeat and licked the former Cleveland stars, 64-53. Sparked by Bob Mills, who scored 30 points, the Dutchmen outclassed their more experienced op- ponents throughout the contest. Pacing the Dutch- men during this contest were Mills, Kaestner, Mc- Donnell, Layton, Herrscher and Potter, and this lineup of players was used consistently through- out the season. After convincingly defeating Hermann and Nor- mandy in pre-league play, the Dutchmen lost their first league encounter to Roosevelt in a nip- and-tuck battle. This was Cleveland's last loss in league play and from then on they continued to roll and wound up co-champions of the Public High League with McKinley and Roosevelt. ! .742 .szadon In the Normandy Christmas Tournament the Dutchmen, attempting to defend their crown, fell to the powerful Webster Statesmen in the finals and took second in the tourney. Cleveland, de- fending their De Andreis Tournament crown, ran over St. Mary's and McBride, but were edged out in the final contest by Beaumont, 48-46, and took second place. From that loss, in the middle of lanuary, lan- sen's Dutchmen shifted into high and rolled all the way to the top. ln the Begionals, Cleveland outclassed Herculaneum, Crystal City, and Kirk- wood to win the State Regional No. 5 Cham- pionship. Thus the Dutchmen had succeeded in accom- plishing a feat they had attained the year beforeg the return to Columbia for the State Tournament. After the Dutchmen had defeated Springfield and Beaumont, it became apparent that Webster was going to be the team to beat and Iansen's Cagers were successful. ln the championship contest Cleveland literally ran the Iunior Bills off the court, swamping them, 62-46, to attain something they had sought for so long - Cleveland, State Basketball Champions. The fight and never quit attitude of each player during the season and the stretch drive, plus the vast game knowledge and coaching magnificence of Earl lansen sparked an unbeat- able combination, a championship team. After all play had ended and sportswriters gathered to pick the All-Star teams, many hon- ors were bestowed on Cleveland's fine players. we Sudan Captain Bob Mills, playing brilliantly through- out the season and picked by the Post-Dispatch as the best speed dribbler in the district in many years, walked away with almost everything. Besides being high scorer in the Public High League, Mills was selected by writers and coaches to tive All-Star teams. These were: All- State, All-Tournament, All-West, All-Opponent, and All-Public High League. Big Arnie Kaestner, ace center and rebounder cn Clevelands championship team, was a big factor in the Dutchmen's success. Kaestner im- proved steadily throughout the season and was selected to several ot the top teams. Arnie was chosen to the All-State, All-Tournament, All-Pub lic High and the second All-West teams. Rich Herrscher, only junior on the starting team, had a fine season and should be sensa- tional next year. A consistent scorer throughout the campaign, Rick received honorable mention at the State Tournament and in the Public High League. loe McDonnell, a fine player and hustling ball- throughout the season. hawk, performed well loe, always aggressive, was all over the court all the time, and was selected on the Public High's second team. Fighting Al Layton, a star defensive man and a good rebounder, provided the spark which was necessary when things were rough. Al, although not receiving any sensational honors, was given honorable mention in the Public High League. Les Potter, the sixth man on the squad and a tine all-around team player, really had it when points were needed in the clutch. For it was Potter who tied up the Webster game at State, ill-ill, a game in which Cleveland went on to win. g6l6Lef6a! CW, Ban! Under the able direction of Coach Sweeney, the Iunior Dutchmen have developed into a promising future team for the Red Castle. This squad is packed with future stars such as Wally Rhodes, high scorer for the team, and Dale Daugherty, a driver and hard hustler. With these boys and others like them the basketball future looks very bright. Some of the better boys are George Burke, Ribert Little, Garry Groh, lack Lewis, Bob Cloud, Harold Bush, Nick Bergauer, Fred Hogankamp and Rich Parey. The team's record was 10-7, including a flashy victory over Beaumont. They lost to Roosevelt in a tough battle by one point in overtime play. The lunior Dutchmen soared to a high 60-point total over Hancock and had sev- eral other impressive victories. The B Cagers' schedule is the same as the Varsity, except for the tourna- ment play. With all the talent found on the B Team and continued support from the school and students, the Cleveland Cagers of the future will come back with another title. 118 roars- ounfry Row l: Donald Hardy, Melvin King, Leonard Maloy, Roy Dummerth. Len Maloy led the field for Cleveland, placing elev- enthp Pete King was next in for the Dutchmen, finishing thirty-fifth: he was followed by Hog Thomas who came across forty-second. King, Maloy, and Thomas received letters in Cross-Country for their efforts. The other members of the team, Don Hardy, Roy Dummerth, Walter Chandler, and Ron Tenney, will receive points toward a spring letter for their work in Cross-Country. The team had some bad luck in the Public High League and lost to Cen- tral and Beaumont by disqualifications. Ioe Bier was high point man in the Public circuit. Making a splashing comeback, the Singermen took a third at the State meet, behind Principia and Normandy, with 32V2 points. The outstanding swimmers in this meet were Ioe Hunsacker, loe Bier, Ed Trenz, and Skip Fischer. Hunsacker tied for second in the 50-yard free style and Bier took second in the lOU-yard free style. Veteran lettermen Captain Guy McRoberts, Dale Sandburn, Al Layton, Ken Miles, Bob Mills, and Rick l-lerrscher provided the necessary experience and power and performed well. Some of the betterplayers rounding out the squad were loe McDonnell, Bill Vasquez, Iim Ridings, Don Krapf, and Roger Thomas. Rookie lerry Koelling turned into the ace of the mound staff, and was batting a sensational .500 as the Beacon went to press. ln the first round of league play Cleveland ended up in a tie for second with a four and three record. ln their first seven encounters, they defeated Central, Soldan, Southwest and Roosevelt, only to lose to McKinley, Beau- mont and Hadley. In the regionals of the State Tournament, Cleveland, hoping to overcome a semi-final complex which had plagued them two years previously, were tagged again. The Dutchmen lost a tough game, 4-3, to the Webster States- men and were eliminated from the tournament. This loss and others were all well-pitched games, but lack of support at the plate made the difference. Cleveland began the second round with a win over Roosevelt and Beau- mont and as the Beacon went to press had a 2-U record. The Dutchmen, coming out of a hitting slump, shook their sticks and blasted out l5 hits to trounce Roosevelt, 15-4. In the other contest, Cleveland edged out Beaumont, 5-4, in a tight game. loe McDonnell was the winning pitcher. And so as the yearbook went to press the Dutchmen were starting to roll. The trackmen elected jules Lewandowski All-Team Captain, and Ron Tenney and joe Marks as junior and Senior Team Captains, respectively. The school, always with ample stores of material, has provided the coach with some of the finest trackmen in the city. A classic example of the Dutchmen's fine runners is the Senior distance medley team which broke a record recently in the East St. Louis relays but even with this excellent showing finished only third. This powerful distance medley was composed of jules Lewandowski, Curt Horn, Len Maloy, and Bob Mills. The senior division was led and bolstered by runners Horn, Maloy, and Lewandowski, and high jumper joe Marks. Paul Schaefer also competes in high jumping, along with pole vaulting and broad jumping. Eury, Westbrook, and Cajacob made good showings in their respective events, and Kerschner, coming along fast, should star in the high and low hurdles next year. Prominent men in their junior division were sprinter Davis, distance-man Tenney, and fieldmen Haag and Hogankamp. When the season ended, the cindermen will have competed against all the teams in the Public High League and in the Maplewood Relays. The setting was the Bound Brook Country Club. Lora Moore and Ruth Van Horn are rivals for the amateur golf championship at the Bound Brook Club. Mr. Moore employs Ierry Downs, a professional, to improve his daughters' game. The rivalry between Lora and Ruth is increased by the fact that both of them are in love with Ierry. At the same time Iack Martin, whose eyebrows have been a source of his woman troubles, falls in love with Angy Howard. The whole show is tied together by the comical actions of Babs Bascomb and Dinty Moore, teen-aged sweethearts. In the midst of everything, Mr. I. C. Effingham, a girdle salesman, adds his laughable character to the production. lt can be truly said that this was one of the top-ranking musical comedies to hit Cleve- land.
