A DAY IN THE COUNTRY By VERA TREINEN AlThough I can now look on The advenTure wiTh a smile, aT The Time iT happened, iT cerTainly was no laughing maTTer. During a Three-day holiday, our Tamily moTored down To The Czarks where we sTayed overnighT aT The Tarmhouse oT relaTives. ATTer enjoying The kind oT dinner ThaT only counTry Tolks can prepare, my younger broTher and I wanTed To see and do everyThing possible in The shorT Time we were able To sTay. SelecTing by chance a road wiTh seemingly likely prospecTs oT inTeresT, he and I pulled our collars closer around our ears againsT The sTrong wind ThaT had been blowing sTeadily since early morning, and began our walk. We were very much disappoinTed in iTs scenic possibiliTies Tor The TarTher we walked, The more desolaTe The counTryside became. TwilighT had deepened and iT was now guiTe dark. There were no human beings wiThin sighT or sound. On The one side oT The road, The Tields were Tlooded wiTh waTer-The backwaTers oT The Tlooded Mississippi, in which Trogs were making whaT seemed To me The weirdesT oT noises in ThaT deserTed IocaliTy. FarTher on, Jimmy, my broTher, noTiced a small shack, which was The TirsT sTrucTure we had come To in some Time. IT was small and unpainTed, wiTh all iTs windows boarded up. We believed iT To be a deserTed schoolhouse because oT iTs diIapidaTed condiTion. LeT's go over and see iT, Jimmy suggesTed. I replied ThaT iT was preTTy laTe and we had beTTer sTarT back. Well, iT you're aTraid1- ThaT seTTled iT. I couldn'T risk being ThoughT aliraid oT a deserTed house, so we crossed The road and walked up To The house. I wenT around To The side. There isn'T anyThing To see. LeT's go, I called To him. WaiT a minuTe. The door's probably locked, buT I'm going To Try iT. So saying, he walked up The Three small sTeps, puT his hand To The knob, and gave a push. The door slowly opened. Meryl he cried exciTedly, iT's openingI BuT seeing whaT was inside, his brown eyes grew bigger, his Tace grew pale as he yelled, RunI There's someThing in There! IT was True. AT TirsT a gleam oT lighT sTreamed ouT Through The door and some- one-I really couldn'T be sure yeT wheTher iT was man, beasT, or goblin-had come To The door. We didn'T waiT To see. The unexpecTedness oT seeing The lighT and liTe oT The house wiThin conTrasTi'ng wiTh The loneliness oT Those open spaces was Too much Tor our nerves. We didn'T sTop running unTil we were ouT oT riTle shoT aT leasTl As we neared The Tarmhouse we agreed noT To say anyThing abouT whaT had happened, Tearing They would laugh aT our scare. LaTer ThaT evening we were all gaThered in The small, dimly-IighTed siTTing-room. Our Uncle John, one oT The oldesT Tarmers in The counTry, said, as he lighTed up his pipe, Yep, iT was one oT The worsT Tloods I ever saw. There were several Tamilies whose homes were Tlooded ThaT came over in This direcTion. I reckon some oT Them are sTill living hereabouTs. lvly broTher and I looked aT each oTher meaningly. So ThaT was The explanaTionI No doubT The ghosTly occupanTs had been as alarmed aT our unexpecTed inTrusion as we. As This phase oT The siTuaTion presenTed iTselT, my hearT resumed iTs normal beaT as I ThoughT ThaT anoTher Time I would noT be so easily TrighTened. Or would I? Page TwenTy-'live
