fills so X i xgweag JIMMY BARRYS GREAT MOMENT If one looked rather closely at a large map of Pennsylvania he would hnd lVlcKees Rocks to be located on the Ohlo Rlver about fifteen mlles above Pxttsburgh lVlcKees Rocks was a typlcal steel town It had a large forelgn popu lation whnch concentrated ID a smgle dlstrlct called the Bottom from the mam offices of the steel company for a block extended the business dlstrl-.t of this section It consisted of the Emporlum S Kornofsky Proprietor Ladies lVlens and Childrens Furnlshlngs Poradas Saloon the social center of the town a furnlture store the Mars the leading motion plcture house ln the Bottom a feature picture every night and severa grocery stores Further along the same street and branching from lt extended row after row of four family houses monotonous ln their slmllarlty and reflect mg the squalld and poverty strlcken axr of the sectxon ln general ln one of these houses llved lmmy Barry a youth of twelve plentl fully endowed wxth freckles to match hrs carrot colored halr He had blue eyes a stub nose and ears whxch he could wrlggle to the great dellght of himself and hls aSSOClHt6S Hrs father belng quite occupled when off work ln swelling lVl1ke Poradas bank account and hrs mother engrossed m the care of the vounger members of her plentiful brood perhaps cllcl not glVC hlm the attention he deserved As a result he developed mto a regular cllent of the uvemle Courts and an excellent prospect for the penltentlary e smoked butts from the street when he could not steal hrs father s nalls as he called them By right of conquest he was the head of a gang whose greatest delights were to bean a man with a be be gun break a wrndow or do some other mlschxef He attended the Carnegle Qchool or rather he was made to attend t As the other alternative was the House of Correction he chose the lesser of two evils l-e was the despalr of all teachers because of his mlschlevous and obstinate dlsposltlon He seemed lmpervlous to all knowledge and yet ln the heart of this mlscreant rankled a desire to take the leadmg part m the entertamment held by the Carnegle School at the end of every half year The entertalnment was a pecullar mstltutlon ln the Bottom lt was the dramatlc event of the year On that day Pole and Slovak l-lungarlan and RUSSIBH lrlsh and German turned out en masse to see thexr helrs perform To take the leading part rn this was Indeed an honor to be sought md lmmv wanted lt When lmmy wanted a thlng he usually got lt m spite of all dlfhcultles The reoulrements for the honor were first rank P151 Tut 111 I 14111 Y W 5 ' 1 Q' Xgggha Q 5r.b K. fi-'1lS X i Ssxgiei baptrzed ln hrs own blood and rs chr stened Black lm the Dip and IS enrolled as an everlastlng member of the Bottom Gang Next the dazed Sammy was tled securely head and feet and a clrcle of yelllng proddlng lndlans formed about hlm By thls tlme he was blub bermg and when the gang left hlm the blubbermg broke mto a prolonged wall ust as the last bell rang he succeeded m releasing himself and came ln school late Hrs record was broken and lmmy got the leading part ln the entertamment It was seven o clock of The Day and already there were a handful of people m the Pollsh Falcon Hall Now there entered a tall Slovak vsrth broad features and gnarled hands accompanled by hrs shriveled woman as he called her and a group of young coming Amerlcans who had come to see their brother Stanislaus ln the tamment Next there entered lmmys parents hls father with bloated face and red nose and wrth a feeling of dlsgust his thoughts of the bunch at Porada s saloon and as befitted the mother of such an lmportant personage Slovak lrlsh Pole Magyar all entered to form one of the motllest though most appreclatlve crowds ever seen at a school entertainment Enght oclock approached wlth the performers m a buzz of 6XCltC ment and with the teachers lmgermg nervously m the wmgs whlle the crowd chattered volubly ID all languages mcludmg the Scandinavian At last the prmclpal arose and dellvered a speech of welcome to the assembled multitude ln plte of the fact that not flfteen per c nt of the audience understood what he said he was applauded heartily and the pro gram began The first number was a vrolm solo lntermmgled wrth lt were the cries of babies of all nations To even an amateur IH music there would be a serlous doubt as to whether the vlollmst or the babxes pro duced the better music but to the crowd the vlolln solo was beautlful Encores were enthu lastlcally demanded and given whlle the face of the mother of thls coming genlus beamed with prlde Thus the program went on number after number bemg heartlly applauded At last the cllmax of the evenmg arrlved It took the form of a pageant of the forty elght states Each boy had the name of a state pmned dlagonally across the front of his body lmmy of course was Pennsylvanra They executed then' maneuvers without a mlshap and were a pleasing plcture for any stage Comlng to rest at last they were applauded until the walls reverberated nmmy s great moment was at hand ames Barry stepped forward to clellver the poem Columbla by oaqum Miller All eyes looked hrs way and the spot light especially Imported from Pittsburgh played upon hlm For the first time ln his life Jlmmy felt a feellng akm to fear He Page Tlzzrly ' ' : .1 - X X X 'assi Y - 4l' 1 r T Y ' - . .
