There are certain qualities necessary for successful citizenship in relation to our American way of life, individually and cooperatively. Many debates, discuss and writings have attempted to set forth these qualities. We must continually study, evaluate, and have constructive action to keep alive the qualities that i great citizens and great nations. Character is the first quality, since it is all-inclusive. Then come courage, loyalty, honesty and integrity. The aforementioned are undergirded and nourished by ini gence, reliability, judgement, and persevering patience. The composite of these characteristics is “Our America. The future of America rests greatly upon you and other coming generations. We need to take stock of our actions in relation to the above qualities and re our directions and rededicate our lives to accepting and discharging the responsibilities that are inherent to our American way of life. The basic truth of our democracy is that for every privilege an American may claim or enjoy in this country, he has a corresponding duty to perform. Democr safeguard is the enlightened conscience of the people. The enlightenment must include: training for civic responsibility; a personal responsibility for our government supporting our laws; a responsibility for protecting differences; a responsibility for the general welfare; a responsibility for leadership. Democracy cannot be endangered if each citizen appreciates his privileges and is conscientious in performing his responsibilities. Will our American way of life better because of your citizenship? The answer is up to YOU.
