Text from Pages 1 - 230 of the 1964 volume:

• V ' i ’ £? m ' To him who in the love of Nature holds Communion with her visible forms, she speaks A various language; for his gayer hours She has a voice of gladness, and a smile And eloquence of beauty, and she glides Into his darker musings, with a mild And healing sympathy, that steals away Their sharpness, ere he is aware ' Thanatopsis Bryant Standing as we are on the threshold of the world, we face disappointments and doubtful times in the years to come. As these situations arise, what can better dispel them than a moment ' s reflection on the beauty and wonders around us? Is there anything more beautiful than the tranquility of a flowing river or the solitude of a country road? What wonders of modern science can equal the mysteries of the vast sea or the radiance of the setting sun? As you turn the pages of your 1964 Aqua Clara, we invite you to consider the loveliness of our natural surround- ings. Perhaps you will recognize, as we did, that our years at CHS have been inextricably connected with the wonders of Nature. Our loyalty we pledge to thee, Clearwater High- 9 There are certain qualities necessary for successful citizenship in relation to our American way of life, individually and cooperatively. Many debates, discuss and writings have attempted to set forth these qualities. We must continually study, evaluate, and have constructive action to keep alive the qualities that i great citizens and great nations. Character is the first quality, since it is all-inclusive. Then come courage, loyalty, honesty and integrity. The aforementioned are undergirded and nourished by ini gence, reliability, judgement, and persevering patience. The composite of these characteristics is “Our America. The future of America rests greatly upon you and other coming generations. We need to take stock of our actions in relation to the above qualities and re our directions and rededicate our lives to accepting and discharging the responsibilities that are inherent to our American way of life. The basic truth of our democracy is that for every privilege an American may claim or enjoy in this country, he has a corresponding duty to perform. Democr safeguard is the enlightened conscience of the people. The enlightenment must include: training for civic responsibility; a personal responsibility for our government supporting our laws; a responsibility for protecting differences; a responsibility for the general welfare; a responsibility for leadership. Democracy cannot be endangered if each citizen appreciates his privileges and is conscientious in performing his responsibilities. Will our American way of life better because of your citizenship? The answer is up to YOU. . . „• PTA ELSIE PAT MYERS Temple U., U. of Fla., B.S., M.A., Dean of Women. WILLIAM JUSTICE Rollins College, U. of N.C., B.S., M.A.; Dean of Boys, Assistant Principal. Beginning with the sophomore year points of grammar and vocabulary are ably presented to the students. In the way of literature short stories, essays, and the novel Silas Marne r are studied. With the junior year comes a more detailed study of American literature. Seniors embark upon a voyage into the wonders of English literature and the pains of the re- search paper. In Journalism, Annual Staff, and Advanced Composition students are presented with the opportunities to apply the principles learned in English class. In the spring students are given the chance to submit original works to the literary magazine Fathoms. Clearwater High students are assured of a sound English foundation as they either prepare for further study in college or seek places in the world of business. Twas a rough night. For the college bound student such courses as advanced algebra, trigonometry and calculus are offered. For the less scientific minded student courses in mathematics, elementary algebra and geometry are interesting. S.M.S.G. courses and others open the door to an understanding of the new mathematics. m 16 The Science Depart- ment at CHS offers to the students a complete and comprehensive Science program. Through able guidance of the staff, the following courses are taught: P S S C , Physics, Chemistry I and II, Bio- logy I and II, Physical Science and Physiology. These courses are enrich- ed and made more inter- esting through class dis- cussions, the facilities of the laboratory, and the A-V equipment. The Romance Languages are well represented at Clearwater High. Latin, the basis of them all and an important contributor to our own English, is taught through four years. Its study in- cludes not only grammar instruction but also a glance backward into the great civilization and literature of Rome. Inter Nos af- fords Latin students the chance to pursue their interest outside the classroom. Four years of Spanish are competently taught by three CHS teachers. Because of its importance in the world today and its prominence in our area, Spanish is the most popular foreign language offered. Los Gauchos has an active membership which furthers individual study and comprehension of Spanish. French is taught for two years. Supplemented by the club Les Esprits Gais, this course gives the student ample opportunity to begin a study of one of the most beautiful of the modern languages. ' Maintenant, class, regardez la carte de France. 1 If) cn Mr. Yanetovich continues to maintain a topnotch Instrumen- tal Music Department. With the Concert Orchestra, Cadet Band, Swing Band, German Band, and the outstanding Crimson Tor- nado Marching Band, this department presents frequent con- certs throughout the year for the enjoyment of school and community music lovers. This year the Crimson Tornado Band had the great honor of being the first Florida band to repre- sent the state at the World ' s Fair which took place in New York. In addition to the multitude of musical opportunities of- fered at C.H.S., there is also a music composition class in which students write their own works which are played in concert by the full band and orchestra. Music is said to have the power to soothe savage beasts. Under the direction of Mr. Sackett our Vocal Music Depart- ment is quite capable of doing this. With Chorus, Choir, Gen- eral Music, and Music Theory Mr. Sackett has launched C.H.S. on the road to music appreciation. Now, don ' t breathe . . . don ' t breathe . . . don ' t breathe!! DRIVER EDUCATION Dr. Livingston, I presume? ED WELLS, JR. - Morehead State Col- lege, A.B.; Driver Ed., Phys. Ed., Track, Football. As students assume the grave responsibilities of driving a car, they are provided with the proper instruction by the Driver Education Department. The students are given classroom instruction concerning the mechanics of an automobile and other information related to rules and regulations of the road, and the care of the car. In addition, they are given actual driving experience on the open highway and in city traffic and practice in controlling a car in various driving situations. The course was greatly supplemented this year by the addition of a driving range in the C.H.S. parking lot. The City of Clearwater offers the opportunity to practice in city traffic and to learn other traffic skills essential to becoming a good driver. With the might of a charging herd of wild ele- phants . . . General woodworking, arts and crafts, and me- chanical drawing compose our Industrial Arts Pro- ► gram. Designing and constructing wood products is the object of woodworking students. Projects are de- signed, their construction studied and the project pro- duced by use of academic activity in conjunction with laboratory work. All projects are achieved by hand and machine processes. The basic aims of the Arts and Crafts courses are to develop skills through working with copper, leather, ceramics, and other materials, and to fill leisure time with self-satisfying work. Engineers, architects, and designers use mechan- ical drawing to record their ideas. It has been called the language of industry. Mechanical drawing teaches exact thinking and visual and imaginative construction. NED FRISBIE - mi U. of Ohio, B ing Green U., M.Ed.; Mechar Drawing I, II, III. Welcome to the C.H.S. library LIBRARY We at C.H.S. are very fortunate in having such a well- equipped and well-staffe d library. The library facilities are available free of charge to students anytime during the day and on designated evenings. The efficient library staff helps students to locate what they want. The library is also the center of Audio-Visual materials used by teachers to enrich classroom lessons. For those students planning on college after graduation, the complete college section in the library should prove helpful and interesting. Maybe it ' s your warm smile or your soft accent or your friendly manner; or maybe it ' s all these things taken together. At any rate, we won ' t forget you for a long time. We hope you ' ll think of your Clearwater friends of- ten after you return to Switzerland, Monique, because we ' ll always have a place in our hearts for you. OUR EXCHANGE STUDENTS Ridvan: Can we ever forget you? Your expressive eyes and shy smile have made you a pleasing asset to the Class of ' 64. What can we say to let you know how much we like and respect you? We hope this year has been a successful one for you, Ridvan. As an AFS student you ' ve shown another side of the world to the stu- dents of CHS. In the years to come we ' ll look back on 1963-64 as sometimes obscure and sometimes event- ful but all the time more worthwhile for having known you. RIDVAN REMAN of Turkey 109 0 V London, England ... To me that city is one of the best in the world. This past summer I came to love the country of Great Britain and, most of all, the people. Through the Ameri- can Field Service I was placed in the Harry C. Mckew family of London and I now regard them as my second family. From the very moment I left New York on the Seven Seas until I arrived in Rotterdam and even all summer I couldn ' t believe that I was actually in a foreign country. There was so much to do and so little time. My wonderful family was so generous in showing me the city of London as an actual resident sees it. Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Windsor Castle were some of the exciting and interesting places I visited. I often think of this past summer, the places I have seen, the people I have met and I never can thank my English family and the American Field Service enough. Carol Kincaid The American Field Service program of providing scholarships for study in a foreign land to a group of carefully selected students is relatively new, although the organization itself was founded during the first World War. Since the program ' s initial step taken in 1947, when a small group of 50 European students were brought to America to study in private schools, the Ameri- can Field Service has sent more than 7000 students from America to more than 40 countries of the world, and brought more than 13,000 young citizens from more than 50 nations to the United States. The over-all objective of the American Field Service is to further the basic understanding and friendship which exists among all men, regardless of race, color, or creed. In the course of one ' s stay, the AFS ' er becomes intimately acquainted with the customs, ideals, problems and interests of the country in which he is studying. The year ' s stay of an American abroad is an enriching experience for the student. The experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity, open to any high school junior who meets the qualifications. It is an unforgettable period in one ' s life. It certainly has been that for me, and I am sure that it has been, and will be, the same for every member of the AFS family: past, present, or future. Bill Arnold NO Our Student Council is the governing body of our school. It works in coop- eration with the faculty for the benefit of all. A 21-0 defeat of Tarpon Springs and wins over Bishop Barry and Boca Ciega followed before the Tornadoes returned home for the biggest tilt of the season. All Clearwater had its finest hour as their grid squad rolled up an astounding 21-6 conquest of the Dixie Hollins Rebels. At this point the Tornadoes were the tenth ranked team in the state. Led by All-Conference players Wallace Charles, Tom Christiansen, Dalfe Schrepple. and Matt Thompson, Clearwater High ' s Tor- nadoes grabbed a share of the second Pinel- las County Conference title by whipping seven of eight league foes. A win over Sem- inole and a tie by Sarasota gave the Torna- does an overall record of 8-1-1. Our Tornadoes nipped Dunedin 12-7 to After tying Saratoga 7-7 at the Sailor ' s field, Clearwater returned home for Home- coming against Seminole. Our boys whomped the Warhawks to the tune of 32-7. A 14-13 victory over St. Pete, a disap- pointing 19-14 loss to Largo, and a 7-6 win over Northeast ended the season. The 1963-64 basketball season saw the Tornado cagers set the Pinellas County Conference back on its heels by capturing second place. Skeptical fans watched as starting seniors Jay Guinn, Mike Hone, Jerry Collman, Dave Spiro, and Bob Cotton scored victory after victory to end the season with a 19-5 record. Jay Guinn was top scorer for the varsity team. Our most exciting games were played against traditional rivals. Largo pushed Clearwater ' s school spirit and pride over the top when senior John Luper buck- eted two magic points to swell our score to a record-breaking 100! Dave Spiro frosted the cake with two free shots to end the game with 102 points. Our two Conference encounters with Dixie Hollins also ended in Tornado vic- tories. The most disappointing aspects of the season were our hard-fought losses to Boca Ciega and top-seeded St. Pete High. The last conference meeting with the Green Devils saw hundreds of CHS fans descending upon SPHS to cheer the Tornadoes on to an almost victory. The Baby Tornadoes followed the example of their big brothers by tallying a winning record of 17-5. Top Sophomore scorers were Lee Luper and Dick Knowles. The team s first match with Largo ended in disappointment, but the boys came back with two con- tinuous wins over Dunedin and Northeast. •1 , The girls ' tennis team, led by number one player Mary Marquardt, launched a successful 1964 season with impressive wins over Largo, Dunedin, and Northeast. With an eye on the Conference Championship the team practiced constantly and played consistently well in their matches with other County schools. Left to right: Teala Thomson, Eleanor Harris, Kathi Percival, Connie Manuel, Linda Spelman, Mary Marquardt. 167 O O J KNEELING, left to right: Gary Arnold, Brian Bean, Jim Curies, Jim Barber, Bill Hinn, Steve Crouch, Gary Moore; STANDING: Gary Brown, Bill Gale, Ken Weiss, Jim Henderson, Bill Levens, Bruce Leary, Alvin Clements. Not Pic- tured: Garry Justice, George Mariani, Richard Olsen, Dave Milleman. 4 JUNIOR As money-mad juniors, we found ourselves com- ing up in the world. Candy sales, concessions and other projects helped to raise money for our top- notch Junior-Senior Prom. Dan Flynn was chosen to guide us as our class president with Kathy Percival to assist him as vice president. Tom Waldron was our secretary and Dale Schrepple handled our money as treasurer. Queen Kit Dietrich reigned over a successful but disappointing homecoming week. The entire student body witnessed a disheartening 7-6 loss, despite our Sink the Sailors efforts. Again we had an outstanding basketball season. After winning the Conference Championship, we lost to Dixie to again become district runner-up. In- cluding this loss we had a remarkable 18-2 season. Honorable records were also accumulated by all Spring sports. The swimming team had its most successful year ever, winning both district contests and participating in the State meet. The baseball team won district runner-up and the track team placed fourth in conference. C.H.S. tennis teams also made a good showing. The long awaited prom week drew near. Elabor- ate planning and decorating followed a Southern Plantation theme produced the best prom ever. This brought an end to a most successful junior year. 171 172 Fiery Finale!
