A New Start At CHS We, the Aqua Clara Staff of 1955, are proud to present this record of the school year. We have tried, on the following pages, to provide a mirror of the year, the happenings, and the people. It is our hope that the reflection is a true one. We want you to see everything just as you remember It and want to remember it. This book is more than merely an account of events; our mirror looks into the people of CHS to see how they feel about each re- flection. 4 AQUA CLARA I I aj ' 1955 CLEARWATER SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CLEARWATER, FLORIDA We wanted to show what the opportunity to start anew, to for- get old mistakes and take up new resolutions, meant to you; to show our new school, our new ideals, our new accomplishments, and the achievements of a new start at CHS. 3 We Are Grateful! We, the students of C.H.S., through the Student Council, the Inter Club Council and the Senate were able to express our desires to moke the school better. We asked the student government for an honor roll, green benches, and a schedule to go to lunch and we got these things. Through a democratic government we the students speak. The meeting will now come to order and all student council Mitchell, Cornelia Barnum, David Martens, Sally Bacon, James members are ready for business, left to right are Montine Clark, Beverly Rippard, Miss Lois Arnold, Dade Flemings, Frances Pennington, Effa Jo Bacon, Dick Whiting, Janet McMullen, Herby Moore, and Patti Campbell. The Peoples Choice Our Student Council is the king pin in our student government. Those of us who are officers were elected by you students but also we have the ' top brass of the major organizations of the school. Our group includes such persons as the presidents of ICC, Senate, and Senior, Junior, and Sophomore classes and editors of the annual and the paper. This year In our new school we could have used more than our one meeting a week with all the problems we had. We also handled school pictures, managed Home- coming, supervised school-wide elections, and published the student handbook. 12 1 Seated: Joan MisiewicZ Paula Pendly, Beverly Bruckman, Standing: Sandy Clendenon, Geri Kunnen, David Martens, Frances Grantham, Lin Henrion, Miss Howell, Paul Saw- Bruce Morgan, Martha McMullen, Sandy Parnell. The Veeps Meet Inter Club Council is one of the three government bodies at CHS. It is composed of the vice-presidents of each club in the school. We serve in the interests of all the clubs, instead of functioning as a separate organization. Our main project this year has been the financing of benches which are placed at various locations around the school. The Senators We, in the Senate, represent you students. Each year, every homeroom elects one senator and an alternate to represent ' it. We, along with the student council, try to better school life by making needed improvements. This year, since we have moved into our new school, we had lots of problems to work on, such as that rush to lunch and getting benches around school. Each month at our meetings we bring up and fry to settle those problems that need attention. We also had charge of the school pictures. Homecoming Dance, and the Red Cross collection. As members of the Clearwater chapter of the Nation- al Honor Society, we strive to uphold the ideals of the organization. These are character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Invitations are extended twice each year. The initiations are unforgetable; the first is informal, and the second, a formal ban- quet. In 1955 we had twenty-two members. One of our biggest projects is helping new pupils become acquainted with their teachers and friends at CHS. During College Day we worked as guides. Member- ship in Honor Society is, to us, an inspiration and an incentive to a better way of life. 14 Front; Ethel Gifford and Joe Paonessa. During our regular meetings, various members give skits and readings, then we discuss these forms of writing. After attending the District and State Conventions, some of us acted as hostesses at the State Fair in Tampa. One of our favorite memories of the year is a water show at Cypress Gardens. We held meetings twice each month where there were planned programs, such as the meeting when we all brought something of interest from foreign countries. To prepare our- selves as better homemakers is our purpose. A Tree Grows At CHS ' ' The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence , bothered us of the Key Club because it applied to our school. Recently completed, our school lacked time and funds to provide for the beautification of its grounds. We planted shrubbery, grass, and trees each Mr. Stephan holds the ' ' barrow full of enrichment material while Don Harwood, Jimmy Clark and Principal Feagle shovel it on. day after school with financial aid from our sponsor, the Kiwanis and other civic organizations. We also worked with the Kiwanis during March of Dimes Week on their annual polio funds drive. Projector Pushers Seated: George Shafer, Paul Sawyer. This year we, the members of Audio-Visual, hove hod a much easier job. There is no need to move the movie equipment from one room to another because we have one especially equipped room in which to show most of the movies. We sent several members to state con- vention. Then, there are our county meetings which we attend four times a year. Unlike many clubs, we do not have regularly scheduled meetings and only call a meeting in an emergency or to make pre- parations for special programs. We are assembling a program to pro- vide the best In service to all teachers and activities. 18 Literature Lenders First row: Evelyn Smith, Lois Parish, Phyllis Rector, Jackie Longstreet, Judy Milner. Usually the only time they think about us is when they have to pay for those forgotten books. Our chores consist mainly of helping everyone. To help, we keep the library neat and quiet, arrange all books in their proper places and, when asked, direct people to certain books. We also have meetings and conventions to attend. In May we have a convention in Leesburg and there are county meetings twice a year. See, we do other things beside collect money. Librarian Mrs. Knight and her helper, George Shafer, go about their daily duty of check- ing in and out b ooks. Amorous Amigos To give a real Spanish flavor to our meeting we invited Pepe, the Mexican guest of Audrey Flohe. We all look forward to Los Gauchos meetings. There are thirty of us and we meet in the homes of members. Minutes, roll, and much of the business conducted in the meetings is in Spanish. Sometimes we play games and sing songs in the language. At Eastertime we sold lilies to raise money for crippled children and during the Christmas season we gave a party for children at the Community Pride Nursery. We think the highlight of the entire year Is the banquet in May where the food, decorations, and entertainment are Spanish. Our motto is: Quien much duerme, poco aprende! (He who sleeps much, learns little!) 20 Foreground: Advisor, Miss Kelley and Eleanor Robbins. ' ' We came, we saw, we con- quered. One of the highlights of our years was the invasion of Spain ' ' . (Los Gauchos) At the February meeting of the Spanish Club, we Invaded while singing Gaudeamus Igitur and took two prisoners. It was all in fun, but we sure surprised those Spaniards. They went around for days mumbling about those Inter Nos people. All of our time is not devoted to fun however, we have our more serious projects such as attending the Latin Forum in St. Petersburg this year. Through this club we try to gain a better understanding of the classical language and the customs of those times. Caesar crosses over to the twentieth century in a radio skit presented in a club meeting pro- gram by Linda Fisher, Alice Pishotta, Pat McKenzie and Jackie Boyd. Working behind the scenes we help support the team by selling ads for programs and decorating the goal posts. Col- lecting donations for Korean War Orphans was one of our projects. Copping third prize for our float in the Homecoming parade was a big boost to our morale. Serving at the annual football banquet are Beverly Rogero and Jill Kirk. Eager to assist, we acted as school hostesses by seating patrons, not only at games, but at Spring Concert, the school dedication, PTA meetings and the football banquet. We stand ready to serve the students In any way possible, from the first home game through the baccalaureate and graduation services. Planning decorations for the next game are Captain Ethel Gattus, Beverly Rogero, Gail McWhirter, Janet Wilson, and Co-captain Frances Grantham. Red Peppers Mapping out the next drill for some eager morche Co-coptoin Joan Viono at one of the squad ' s sessions. We were proud to be the first members of the Clearwater High School Pep Squad. Practices were long and hard but every minute was worth It. Those Friday nights were so much fun! Wearing white turtle-neck sweaters, short red skirts, and white gloves, we joined the cheerleaders in the yells. Some- times we added our own special arm motions. In our forma- tions on the field we used torches and flashlights. We knew that, as Tornadoettes, we were building school spirit. 1st Row: Joan Viano, Miss O ' Grady, Sara Jane Upp. 2nd Row: Motile Guinand, Nancy Yettaw, Sonja Robbins, June Stuart, Jo Ann Bantola, Dotti Chancy, Martha Coachman, Barbara Lopez. 3rd Row: Sylvia Quinn, Pat Greenwood, Joan Golson, Diane Houck, Jan Hendricks, Valle Kyle, Georgia Ort, Kitty Kohrt. 4th Row: Sue Drayton, Barbara Burtis, Betty Allen, Donna McGregor, Kathy Hunt, Sue Francis, Donna McMullen, Marilyn Silo. 5th Row: Mary Paul, Shirla Bradford, Carol Singley, Donna Falconier, Nancy Myers, Judy Milner, Doris Bates, Laura McMullen. 6th Row: Booth Bargarman, Dolores Baldwin, Lela Ashley, Joanna Schwarzkoff, Sandy Burton, Marcia Cotton, Helen Robbins, Diana Felton. 7th Row: Janet Reagan, Janet Logan, Sally Benbow, Kay Lippincott, Laddie Lucas, Diane Swan, Betty Lawler, Bunny Monngrides. 8th Row: Cherie Clifford, Sally Reynolds, Meridith Peterson, Sondra Underwood, Pat Silo, Mary Curtis, Betsy Campbell. Standing: Miss Kirkpatrick, Frances Moore, Pat Dunn, Priscilla Barnes. And So To Bed This year we had a wonderful time working on the Annual. Because we were the first staff of the new C. H. S., we had a big job to do. We had to set up good traditions and principles. Prep arations for this Annual began last summer when several of our members attended the Yearbook Institute in Tallahasse. Kannibal Kapers was a big success put on by the Aralc Auqa tribe featuring Aqua Clara Stew. This was our way of announcing that 1955 Annuals were on sale. D ' ' DAY was the day we all long awaited as it was the day we all got our Annuals and the pens began to write frantically In our classmates books. I The Student Prints We are one of the busiest groups in C. H. S. chosen from the Journalism class. We do all make up and writ- ing on the Clearlight, which is published monthly. Our major project of this year was the changing of the newspaper ' s name from Chatter ' to Clearlight . Other projects include the Calendar Girl Contest and the Top Hat Dance. We also submitted the best articles that we wrote to the monthly Florida State Press Assoc- iation Contest Tournament where they were rated and compared to other Florida High School Newspapers. Any student with a B average in English may take Journalism. All hands are outstretched for the eagerly anticipated issues on publication day. Staffer Grace Waterson is distributing the Clearlight. Dizzy Geer and Don Blum kibitz Mrs. Truluck (alias Miss Foley) over her littered desk. 25 Kneeling: Shirley Geiger, Patty Campbell, Gail Burdsall, Charlotte Geiger, Sandy Parnell, Kay Lippincott. Officers: President: Shirley Geiger; Vice President: Sandy Parnell; Secretary: Charlotte Geiger; Treasurer: Olive Johnson. Patient Preservers We, the fledgling nurses, journey to Morton Plant Hospital every month for practical experience and training. Not only can we take temperatures and hold hands, we also cheer up the patients with smiles and small talk and take them for buggy rides in their wheel chairs. The sewing of our blue uniforms can also be added to our list of accomplishments. Christmas parties mean a lot to everyone and the party we gave for the patients was no less important. One can see where a practical nurse gets her name. We do practically everything-and everything practically. Performing one her many duties is Future Nurse Nancy Eben. Some industrious members prepare their float for the homecoming parade. Standing: Dede Flemings, Evelyn Smith, Jackie Boyd, Merry June Jackson, Martha Jo Lairsey, Mary McMullen, Nolla George, TDean Hadfield, Elaine Varney, Phyllis Shower, Martha Jean Sargeant, Lois Mixter, Shirley Coachman, Pat McKensie, Martha McMullen, Phyllis Rector. Officers: President: Randy Reed; Vice President: Martha McMullen; Secretary: Phyllis Rector; Treasurer: John Boyd. Embryo Instructors To encourage students to become teachers and to stim- ulate students already interested in the profession is our objective. We Future Teachers are busy people. We supervise the playground at Skycrest Elementary School, observe teachers at work, and are the guests at a tea given by the elementary teachers. This is just our second year as an organization and we are looking forward to increasing our membership and our influence. Mr. Sharp, club adviser, is telling Randy Reed, Linda Fisher, and Merry June Jackson about present-day opportunities for future teachers. 27 Rirst Row— Clarence Vick, Danny Cockerham, Carol Phipps, Robbie Dickenson, Joyce Burnett, Joan Burnett, Shirley Adams, Pat Roberts, Dolly Ryder. Second Row— Robert Cottrell, Marie Jordan, Connie Tuten, Bobby Spake, Gerry Hurst, James Hite, Rick Mills, Jo Ann Sinclair. Job Happy We of the Diversified Co-operative Training in preparing for our future vocation, have trained for a variety of occupations. The two hours spent in DCT helped us to adjust to our present jobs and gave us an overall view of the business world. Don ' t think DCT is all work and no play. Our annual employee-employer banquet and our Halloween party proved to be huge successes. The funds for the annual banquet were earned by selling Christmas Cards. Many of our crew are employed locally at T. V. shops, theatre, and the downtown stores. We ' ll be seeing you. And Away We Go The ' ' Charging Changers run again. This year we sponsored the first Powder Puff Bowl Game. The Cheer- feaders won the game, but all profits were given to us for our trip to Middleton, Kentucky. Besides selling candy, cakes, occasional cards, and Christmas trees, we took care of the concession stand here at school be- fore and after school. Yes, we had many methods of raising money, but we needed them to get to Kentucky. Thirty-four of us went to Kentucky for two weeks and had a wonderful time. We went to Mammoth Cave and Churchill Downs, where we just missed the Kentucky Derby. Sarah Upp and Sally Bacon receive last minute instructions from Coach Joe Poanessa before rushing onto the field. Two hungry fellows support the club by buy- ing some of that delicious candy from Effa Jo Bacon. Loyal Lassies We all benefited from the Hi-Teen programs this year. First, we participated in the annual canned food hunt for Clear- water ' s needy families. Christmas cards were sold to benefit our fund. Of course, we were especially Interested in the programs on personal appearance. We heard experts and models at these meetings. We had a grand time planning the Sweetheart Dance, our big money-making project. With our money we will send girls to summer conference in La Grange, Georgia. Through the Hi-Yeens we helped others as we helped ourselves. The officers are as follows. President, Harriette Hemerick; Vice President, Geoffrey Lee, Recording Secretary, Martha Jean Sergeant; Corresponding Secretary, Bevery Powers; Treasurer, Matle Guinand. Able Assistants Along with our regular classes, office assistants spend one class period each day helping Mr. Feagle and the school secretaries. We do such things as distribute mail, relay messages to cldssropms, answer the telephone, operate the inter-com and switchboard, and compile Information for filing. This year, for the first time, we will receive a credit for the course, which is called ' ' Office Practice. Thanksgiving is usually the first school appearance we make: Sometimes before that, we sing for different civic organizations. Then we start Christmas music. At the Christmas assembly, we reenact the Nativity In song. In January, 16 of us went to Tampa to participate In the All State Chorus. In March we went to Contest. Our Spring Concert was one of the main attractions of the Fun in the Sun Festival. We sang our adieu at Graduation. Above: Our men, the baritones, are deep in concentration. We ' re sure you recognize that popular ditty, but have you heard it in Italian? We madrigals have been busily translating popular songs into Italian in between clinic, contests, and holiday programs. The word madrigal means love ballad. They originated in Italy and were further developed In England. In old times, the family would gather around the spinet in the evening and sing. Under the direction of Paul Butler, we are proud to have been chosen. Ann Womack and Janet McMullen console David Erwin as he rests after one of the Madrigals many performances to raise funds for a trip to New Orleans. Always on the March We band members wanted very much to. take our trip to Washington this year to march in the Cherry blossom Festival. As we lacked sufficient funds for such a trip, our dream seemed to have very little hope of coming true. We told our problem to the public in the way we knew best— with an On to Washington concert. We raised the needed currency. But this was just one of the many things we did this year. We played for all the football games, festivals all over Florida, assemblies and numerous civic and private organizations. It can ' t always be said of the band that they keep their noses to the grind. They are having a grand old time playing for the homecoming parade. Just Fiddlin’ Around Although the orchestra is on organized group here at CHS, we do not meet every day or have a set day to meet each month. We do, however have rehearsals before every performance. This year we played at the convention of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. In order to help the band, of which many of us are members, to raise money for their trip to Washington, we played at the On-to-Washington Concert. One of the high points of our year was attending the Holiday for Strings show in Tallahassee in which teachers as well as college students partic- ipated. 35 Our Baby Organizations Left to right: Pat Moses, Nancy Brown, Pat Caruthers, Stuart Wilkinson, Richard Drossier, Westlake Geo- bring, Carol Ward, Dorothy Clark, Nancy Mylander, William Trickel, George Shafer, Mrs. Johnson, spon- Stamp Club First Row: William Taylor, Merry Carol Filek, Jerry Brunkhart, Shirley Jordan, Ronnie Dennis. Sweater Boys We of the C ' Club strived throughout this year to keep our standards of sportmanship high and to promote a closer feeling of friendly rivalry at games, not only among the boys who played, but the student and parent body attending. We feel we have accomplished a great deal when we recall the spirit of cooperation that was so prevalent at football and basketball games. We as a team feel we owe a lot to the constant backing of the parents, students, cheerleaders, usherettes, and clubs who worked together to weld us into an unbreakable bond of oneness. Our football team is proud of its record of 5 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie. Homecoming stands out in our mind as the thrilling game we won in the last few seconds of the playing time. Our complaints were loud and long over our gruelling skull practice and training. It wasn ' t easy to miss that party, refuse that coke, and take that girl home early. At the banquet we realized that it was worth it. We are proud of our red jackets and letters. We think we earned them, we hope we deserve them, we will always treasure them. Cinder and Diamond Men When the rest of the world is suffering from spring fever, we ore just beginning to work the hardest. Base- ball and track practices begin the first of February and continue through the middle of May. We begin our games in March. Practice! Practice! was our byword as we members of the tennis team looked forward to a season of love matches against each of our scheduled opponents. However, our dreams went unrealized as we faced stiffer competition In the newly formed Western Conference. Composed entirely of seniors, both our boys ' and girls ' teams were amply pro- vided with experienced and eager players drawn from the sixth period class. The asphalt tennis courts constructed on the campus late in the spring furnished us with a boost to tennis interest by their easy accessibility. Pat Ahrens Jim Stupple Delbert Ganglehoft Golf Russ Coit ' Tore! ' ' Not four, but 8 of us ore represent- ing CHS on the golf team this year. And do we ever have fun! There is just some kind of a thrill hitting that little ball and knowing that you can place it anywhere you like. It isn ' t all fun, though. We work hard. It takes a lot of walking to prepare for a 22-game season; and that ' s what we had this year. Unlike most sports, our practice begins in September and is not over until the last of those 22 games are played. But when we leave, we have something; something we will be able to enjoy and carry with us into our future lives. Happy Hayes 49 V ' Randy Burk Sara Jane Upp Zo Ann Holt Tim Schawg Go! Team! During this, another of our successful years, we, the girls ' basketball team of CHS, have had lots of fun and have Improved our sportsmanship through our ploying. Although we put in many hard hours of practice, we aren ' t complaining. We like to believe that basket- ball, or any other sport, for that matter, helps develop us both mentally and physically and rounds out our personalities. With the help of our coach. Miss Annie Lou O ' Grody, we hove chalked up many victories over our competitive neighbors. Knowing and playing with our teammates has been both o wonderful and educational experience. Those of us who ore graduating regret that we won ' t be able to ploy another gome for dear old CHS; but those of us who will be here another year ore looking forward to other victories. } 51 A Guard Shoots? Plant Of Opportunity: Staff Of Experience We accept the challenge! We pledge ourselves to give our best! Our challenge is to project our knowledge, our strength, our effort, our skill and our wisdom to the development of the highest type of citizen for our country. Juniors Reminisce With Foresight The Junior Closs-we ' re not the babies, or the most high, but weVe into everything. ' All the clubs consider us a vital part. The athletic contests, the classes, the dances, the assemblies, are all important to us and we to them. We sponsored a football dance right away. And weren ' t our boys great In those football, basketball, and baseball games! The Masque and Gavel Play, the Student Council, National Honor Society— we were there! Our own favorite junior reigned at May Day. Oh! The Prom! The headaches, the disasters, the final thrill! Didn ' t we honor the seniors grandly! Remember when we ordered our rings, the first taste of senior life. We loved our junior year; we ' ll always cherish It, but we ' re looking ahead with light and starry eyes. We ' ve reached the final turn, we ' re nearly there. We ' ve been discouraged, dis-heartened, nearly given up, but not quite, we ' ve held on. And now as we look back with dim eyes, we step ahead with brand new dreams. We did! We ' re there! We ' re Seniors! 77 Junior Sally Adams, William Alford, Lawrence Alley, Karen Alt, James Arnholt, Gary Atherton, Roger Ashley, Wanda Ayers. Sophomores Look Ahead With High Hopes Our Sophomore yeor it was just os we onticipoted only lots more fun and not nearly so frightening. We practically took over the Pep Squad right from the first. We joined all the clubs and became very active in them. We were asked to be in the assemblies and floorshows. We sponsored a dance and used the proceeds to decorate for Baccalaureate. At the end of the year we were candidates for offices in Student Council, clubs, cheer- leading. Our boys played very hard on the junior varsity teams. And now its all behind us. It is hard to grasp all we were given. We are being swept into our junior year with its opportunities and its responsibilities. The security of a helping hand will be missed by all of us. We will try to be helpful fo the new Sophomores when we become Juniors. 81 SOPHOMORE ROW 1: S. Abner, N. Alexander, B. Allen, F. Allen, R. Amex, G. Andrews, L. Ashley, S. Bachus, D. Baldwin.
