Mystic new worlds lie before us, unex¬ plored, unconquered, perhaps destined to be unveiled by us. Uncertainty clutches at our hearts, for nameless challenges beckon on the horizon. Before we venture forth, let us raise the cup of knowledge in one last resounding toast—a toast to the World of Tomorrow. f 3 cjxM ’ 4 4 3 ' o our chief pilot . . . After nine years of struggle we had finally made Senior High. We were only Sophomores, the lowest form of humanity, but our great adventure had begun. Acting as mechanics on our first trip into the Great Spaces of a new life, first duties were assigned during Sophomore Week. Carrying books in buckets, pushing pennies with our noses, singing The Crimson and the Grey, wearing our names on signs, and other countless nonsense were part of the fun of being accepted by upper classmen. Our first big decision—that of electing our class officers—proved a success and we flew a steady course under Mildred, Bill, Joyce and Martha Jo ' s leadership. Football season—and with it our first weekly pep session. No one was prouder when CHS had an untied, undefeated football team. The first in its history. Not only did they walk off with the Pinellas County Trophy, but also won the South Florida Conference Championship! After mid-year exams, Seniors presented Aaron Slick From Punkin Crick. Some day we, too, would give a play. The Space Ship was nosing in toward home again as we celebrated May Day, Queen Pat with her escort Pete, and weren ' t we proud of Sally and Jack. Then in a rush of exams, dances, graduating Seniors and report cards, we landed, and our first trip had been successful. Our Oecond Or ip! After three months, we reported back. This was to be our second trip and we were now part of the crew. During Sophomore week, we taught our underlings a few things, such as: how to wear their shoes on the wrong feet; how to eat garlic. The garlic idea backfired, for we had to smell the Sophs ' breath all day. Oh well, live an ' learn. Another good start with Wise selections at Class Elections. Ed, Ned, Jeannine, and Albert led our crew with our confidence. The band tuned up; the cheerleaders, among which were our own class¬ mates—Holly, Gerry, Jo Ann, and Patty, donned their uniforms; the team kicked off, and football season was here again. With a hope in our hearts and a shout in our throats, we cheered our boys on to the Pinellas County and South Florida Conference Championships for the second year. The Senior Play, A Date With Judy, starring Betsy and Bobby, was an outstanding performance. As we tripped off to the Jr. Sr. Prom for the Seniors, we left the poor little mechanics behind with few regrets. We had watched with longing last year and our turn had come—so would theirs. Then came May Day, held on the lawn in froiu of the school. The court, composed of Queen Jo Ann and King Charles; the attendants, Holly and Bill, Laura Lou and Jack, Mildred and Bill, and Lila and Chuck, looked beautiful sitting under the old oak trees with the glee club on one side, the orchestra on the other and flowers everywhere. Before we landed, we struggled through our exams and emerged trium¬ phant! Another voyage had come to its end. Our Okird Ori ' rip . Three-months leave over, we returned to take command, for we were ex¬ plorers this trip!!!! Right away we elected a capable command. Albert, Ned, Lila and Mil¬ dred were chosen to guide-us. With the arrival of our class jewelry came a sense of unity. Remember the locks on our lockers? My, but we fussed about them! But Mr. Feagle stood firm, and we succumbed to his command. With Coach Justice ' s absence, our winning streak took a tumble, but the old C.H.S. spirit was still in there pitching, so we gave opponents a rough time. How glad we were when Laura Lou and Jack joined the cheering squad. Remember how lovely Queen Jessie and her attendants, Holly, Gerry, Jo Ann, and Jean looked at Homecoming!! That was the Plant game-—the night the torrid Tornadoes were beaten. Soon basketball season was moving full speed. Who will ever forget the faculty and student team game with Miss Myers heading her magnificent faculty cheerleaders—Miss Kelley, Miss Turner, Miss Morse, Mrs. Turner, and Miss Foley. The faculty won?! Just before Christmas the band and orchestra presented a Christmas concert. Mid-year exams (ugh!) over, the annual staff rushed hither and yon with deadlines to meet; the senior class productions group hustled and bustled to get Best Foot Forward ' ready for presentation. We thought we had a good play with Delano and Henry in the s tarring roles, and it really did make a hit!! Our third trip was nearing an end, and suddenly we wanted it to cease hurrying. Then, our caps were on and we were walking sedately down the auditorium aisle to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance. At last, we were to receive the honor bestowed by dear old C.H.S. on those who were willing to work hard and continuously for their own betterment. As we waited to re¬ ceive the first material indication of our hard work, we wondered where the last few weeks had flown. The Sr. Play, Best Foot Forward, and the hit it made; May Day; Sr. Week, complete with Skip Day, the Prom and Banquet; final exams and diplomas. Had it really happened? Now that our trip was completed, were we finished? No—for though we had taken our last excursion, we would be making trips alone into the spaces of greater and higher knowledge. Our great voy¬ age of life had just begun! £pL oivrA We, the explorers, having completed our basic training, are now ready for our solo flight. Before departing, we turn over our charts to the crew for the day when they too will ex¬ plore the World of Tomorrow. T.—Three letters that stand for so much, because the Diversified Co-operative Training group has as its aim the all important task of preparing young people for their life, after high school, when they shall make up a part of the work-a-day world. This is accomplished by the practical knowledge given them by their advisor, the able Mrs. Ruth Brubeck, and by actual experiences in their field of work. CREED We are the Future Homemakers of America. We face the future with warm courage, And high hope. For we have the clear consciousness of seeking, Old and precious values. For we are the builders of homes, Homes for America ' s future. Homes where living will be the expression of everything, That is good and fair. Homes where truth and love and security and faith, Will be realities, not dreams. MAX SPELLMAN When the doors of C. H. S. were opened in the fall of 1950, M. A. Spellman came in as head coach. A native of Savannah, Georgia, he went to the University of North Carolina, where he played on the Tarheels Sugar Bowl team of 1945. In ' 48 and ' 49, he was assistant coach, head basketball and track coach here. He then moved to Philadelphia, where he played for the Philadelphia Eagles. Welcome back, Coach Spellman! And we all hope you stay here a long time. ROBERTS BROWN Coach Roberts Brown, an alumnus of C. H. S., graduated from Tampa Univer¬ sity, and has become a famous guy around here. He is head coach for the basketball team and B-squad coach in football. He deserves a lot of credit for the fine show of spirit and work his teams have shown. GUS SAKKIS Coach Gus Sakkis, no longer a new¬ comer, has won the friendship and con¬ fidence of everyone at C. H. S. He at¬ tended Rollins College and coached at Plant High in Tampa. We are all proud of the excellent assistance he has given Coach Spellman and Our Tornadoes. HARRY HANCOCK Harry Hancock, an old alumnus of C H. S. and Rollins College, deserves the spotlight of C. H. S., as one of the assist¬ ant coaches. He spends his school hours as an American history teacher and is- liked by all. During the summer, he is Clearwater ' s ace Bomber catcher. A lot of credit goes to him for his hard work to make the Tornadoes a success this year.
