WALLING Algebra j oxz(tfo%d The Aqua Clara is a key to recall things we have enjoyed and wish to remember— things that have only been possible because we have been born in this land. This year, our graduating class calls its loyal to the colors, for we fight for the rights we have long enjoyed, and we fight for the heritage which has made our lives, our schooling, and our way of life possible — the heritage of freedom — for it must never die. We, the Senior Class of 1943, present to you the “War Edition of the Aqua Clara”. We hope you like it. oj- thz SznLoi dta±± Four years ago, we, the Lieutenants of 1943, entered as privates in the great camp of high school education at Fort C.H.S. During the first year, we did very little except to name Dick Caldwell as our head “drill sergeant”. At the time of our promotion to corporals in 1940, we were joined by corporals from the basic training camp at Dunedin and Safety Harbor and entered whole-heartedly into the work at Fort C.H.S. Our comrades-in-arms soon began to take notice of these high-rating corporals for we began to take part in the various social activities of the Fort. That year Chester McMullen was chosen as our 0. D., with Mrs. Lillie Milam as C.O. We found ourselves shipwrecked while on maneuvers, but were able to rescue ourselves in order to decorate for and usher at the baccalaureate service of 1941. Sergeants! Three Stripes! In this office we took a greater part in the activities at Fort C.H.S. With Mary Collins and Miss Sara de Kirkpatrick leading our company, this time, we inau- gurated, during Junior Week, the flag raising ceremony- gave - ception for our parents, entertained our superior officers in an air-raid shelter, and decorated for their graduation. Then the great day came — we received our commission — full-fledged Lieutenants — we had our bar. For the last stretch of our training here, Dick Caldwell again returned to the front as Commander-in-Chief; Delmar “Plug” Harris headed the Student Council; Earl McKisson, the Honor Society; Milton Jones, the Key Club; Nancy Black, the Chatter Staff; Norman Wilcox, to be succeeded by Bob Ennis, the Annual Staff; Van Robinson, Quill and Scroll. Masque and Gavel chose as their leader Alice Beardsley, while Jim Read, later to be suceeded by Mary Collins, led the Ko-Op-Kouncil ; Edna Haynie, the Library Club; Betty Kamensky, F.L.S. Robert Jernigan, Mit- chell McMullen, George Lohmeyer and Otto Ruegg were elected our Junior Rotarians. Toward the end of March we found ourselves painting scenery, learning lines, thinking back to styles of 1912 and 1862 for our Senior Class Play, “Smilin’ Through” which was direct- ed by our own Sara de Kirkpatrick. It was perhaps, in some res- pects, a little more serious than previous senior plays, but wc might all profit by the experience of John Cartaret — that all hate and revenge blots out all love. Senior skip-day began the wind-up of the year. Taking the day off from our duties, we spent the whole day having one glorious time and coming home with beautiful sunburns to remind us of it. Then the orders came fast and furiously to wind up our activities and business at this fort and to make ready for deportation — destination unknown. Sjioxt of 1 943 Looking over the past season we see that the Crimson Tornadoes have enjoyed the best season in a decade. The thundering Tornados gaining momentum as the season progressed, plowed through the entire season suffering only one de- feat; that at the hands of Plant Panthers in a hard fought battle. The Tornados were deprived of the Big Ten football title when they were edged out by Hillsboro in the final tabulation. The Pinellas County Football Title is again in the possession of the Tornadoes by virtue of a 7-6 victory over the strong Pt. Ppfe Green Devils in the annual Thanksgiving Day classic. Outstanding on this years team and winning state wide recognition are: Harry Hancock, allstate center; Hank Moore, second team allstate fullback; Buddy Daw- son. second team allstate end; Bobby Forbes, honorable mention allstate wingback. After the season was under way- it was evident that the Tornadoes were lacking something as they lost a number of p-ames by narrow margins. It seemed as if they could not get on the winning track nnd muster the final punch to win. After a very unsuccessful season in pre-tournament play, the Tornadoes did equally bad in tournament competition. The outstanding player and constant high scorer in every game was lanky John Chestnut, allstate center and the only player to win any acclaim. Schedule iponent Place C.H.S. Opp. Opponent Place C.H.S.
