swing swing it boys! every time we turn on the radio, everywhere we go, we hear this phrasc. but, what is swing? no one really knows what it means. we are no exceptions in this particular case. we donit know eith- er. we shall, therefore, not come right out and explain what it isg but will beat a- round the well known bush and give you an example. may we say, before we start on our fling, that any similarity to an article appearing in the january readers' digest is purely coincidental. Cwe read that article tooe-good, wasnlt it?J now that's over we'll start. after going down two or three stairs, we enter a dimly lighted, basement room. there are very small tables placed closely around a low platform in the center of the room. on this platform is seated a rather large group of musicians. they are attired in very informal clothes, each has his instrument near at hand. lucky for us, we have arrived just in time. had we been later we would not have been allowed to enter. suddenly with out any cue, one of the clarinets be- gins to play a popular melody. several others join in, following the clarinet. by now he is K1LK1I1g-Oullw. ne soars above the melody, tnen rides on down . we, the alligators,,, are impressed by the fact that he is a master oi nis instrument. later we Ilnd he is one of U16 outstanding orchestra leaders of the day. almost as suddenly as he began, he stops.one of the trumpets picks up the melody. we can no longer distinguish the melody from the rhythm. all this time we have seen no music, and what's more we won't see any. paper men arenlt allowed in these sessions. the Heats are really getting in the groove and we feel the presence of the melody even though we cannot hear it. in the middle of the song there is a break , which the drum- mer takes. the object seems to be to destroy the traps in the shortest possible time. how- evcr, the drums seem to be standing up o. k., so we won't kick. then the break is over and the others join in on the rhythm. they stop. my! hasn't the time gone quickly? it's late already. we do not clap, but simply leave by the door through which we came. we have atteded a typical jam session . that's swing new do you know what it is? we don't edi.tor's note: see glossary of swing terms on next page for words and terms which you do not understand.
