C ' VI Cfcm .jshdfory To those who w1ll soon forget the years we spent here those years wh1ch w1ll always be lncluded 1n our happy memorles we the sen1ors of 1951 wrlte our h1story as d1d thxrty s1x former graduat1ng classes of th1s h1gh school Although we have had our l1kes and d1s l1kes our work and play st1ll our devot1on to C H S has never waned In September of 1947 fxfty four prorrnsmg students entered the1r f1rst year of hlgh school tlllnklng themselves to be qu1te grown up but soon learned that the road ahead was not an easy one Mxss Anderson and Mr Babylon acted as adv1sors for we freshman The acachemlc students thought themselves very brave and attempted to master algebra xnstructed by Mr Strlte who labored day after day trymg to make us understand that the letters of the alphabet such as x a and b could represent any unknown value also that when we subtract we really add the problem Anc1ent H1story under the tutor1ng of Mr Bookblnder was another challenge for us Mr Babylon attempted to teach us how locomot1ves are assembled and how they operate Our Engl1sh course cons1st1ng of short stor1es poetry and novels was taught by Mrs Bowman The hxgh lxght of the course was Shakespeare s Jul1us Caesar wh1ch appeared 1nterest1ng and entertalnlng to all of us The only dxfference 1n courses among the class was that the vocatlonal students learned the art of homemakmg under the d1rect1on of Mrs Way and general mathemat1cs under Mr Str1te The class to wh1ch we all looked forward was physlcal educatlon dlrected by Mxss Eastep who endeavored to exp1a1n the rules and methods of f1e1dba1l basketball and softball Mr Snyder coached the boys 1n soccer and other sports Mus1c was the class when the entlre group harmonlzed 1n songs of farnous composers and folk tunes We eagerly awa1ted the month of June fmally arr1ved and we sald Good bye' to our teachers and classmates to go home for three months summer vacat1on In the fall of 1948 several young ladxes and gentlemen returned to school to beg1n thexr sophomore year We were sorry to learn that n1ne of our classmates had dec1ded that they had recelved suff1c1ent knowledge to carry them through l1fe These were Mane Bloyer Dorxs Mlller Betty Jean Weaver Carrle Yost Ruth Brldendolph Vxolet Mllls Harry Frush Eugene Blshop and Harold Hovermale The entxre class assembled 1n one room wxth Mr Murray as our homeroom teacher We welcomed R1ta Stotlemeyer to our group but she remamed only a short tlme The courses for the commg year were lntroduced to us The academlc boys and glrls challenged Latxn w1th the a1d of O I 9 9 I . . . . . -. . . . . . . - g , ... . .- .. . f I . . . - v ' ll 9 -V 1 - 2 . .. stud1ed body structure mcludxng everyth1ng from the axnoeba havmg one cell to the chordata or the human be1ng w1th many bones and m1ll1ons of cell structures The novel 'Tale of Two C1t1es was the ma 1nterest 1n our Engl1sh class under Mrs Bowman In the latter port1on of the year grammar followed and we pondered over the many parts of speech k1nds of phrases etc Phys1cal Educat1on and muslc once more were d1rected by M1ss Eastep Mr Snyder and Mrs Robmette respect 1ve1y When June arrlved Mr I-laugh took the b1ology students on a tr1p to Wh1Ch we had looked forward through the ent1re year The tr1p be1ng to Washmgton and v1s1t1ng the zoo Smlthsoman IIlSt1tlltC med1cal museum and the cathedral as well as other places of mterest Th1s tr1p was enjoyed by everyone and IS one of our most pleasant memorles thus far 1n h1gh school Thus endxng our sophomore year of school Upon enter1ng our Junlor year lt was necessary to become acqua1nted w1th two new teachers M1ss Dell1nger who later becarne Mrs Shank as supervlsor of phys1cal educat1on and M1ss Kendle 1nstructor of home econom1cs Once more we were aware of the absence of several of our group They were Carole Bowers Mar1an Seylar Jud1th Martm and Bruce Saunders moved elsewhere to f1n1sh the1r schoolxng Although we lost these classmates we welcomed three new students who were Barbara Rowland Betty Mlller and John Egolf John and Betty remamed wxth us for a short tlme The sclence laboratory served as our homeroom w1th Mr Babylon as our advlsor The vocatlonal students undertook a schedule cons1st1ng of home econom1cs under the d1rect1on of M1ss Kendle a new teacher afnd agnculture supervlsed by Mr Way The academlc students attempted second year Latm w1th the 11fe of Juhus Caesar plus stor1es of wars etc M1ss Anderson's patlence enabled her to endure the translatxons through wluch we sometlmes struggled Engl1sh cons1sted of hterature such as short stor1es poetry and grammar under Mrs Bow man Mr Ware alded us 111 our explolts of the Revolutlonary and C1V11 Wars the Westward Movement and other phases 1n our Arnerlcan H1story classes Durmg our chemlstry perlods Mr Babylon constantly stood the r1sk of d1saster as we muted and heated chemlcals Phys1cal educat1on and muslc were supervlsed by Mrs Shank Mr Hoover and Mrs Robmette respect1vely Throughout the year the class tolled w1th the problems of ralsxng money for the Junxor senxor prom After much plannmg and work the b1g n1ght arrlved and everythmg went well thus br1ng1ng to a close our eleventh year of school1ng September 1950 marked the date when our group assembled ln Mr Ware's homeroom and were dxsappomted to fmd that vlrglnla, Ha1nes was no longer wxth us leavlng a total of thlrty s1x Mrs Bowxnan . , ' ' ' in Alverta Shoemaker, John Wade and Donald Repp. Mary Wade and Ralph proved an excellent a1d w1th V1V1d explanat1ons 1n the study of Shakespeare' MacBeth and later 1n the year the study of Engllsh per1ods w1th the1r effect on llterature as well as famed Enghsh wr1ters were studled Durmg physlcs class exper1ments mvolvmg heat steam and s1mple mach1nes proved qulte lnterestmg Mr Babylon was patlent w1th us durlng our blunders Once more Mr Str1te undertook the task of teachmg us to solve algebra1c equat1ons and a1d us 1n problems 1nvolv1ng square roots and cube roots of numbers Problems of Democracy as usual brought forth d1sagreements on varlous subjects such as labor dmsputes laws and many others Mr Ware however managed to explaln thlngs to us Pleasant odors came from the Home Econom1cs Department where the semors had part1c1pated 1n cookmg and also sewmg under M1ss Kendle and Mrs Warfxeld a new member of the faculty Mr Way taught the bas1s of agrlculture wh1le Mr Kramer demonstrated the techn1que of crafts to the sen1or boys and attract1ve lamps stands and benches were produced Mrs Shank and Mr Hoover mstructed us 1n shoot1ng baskets throw offs from center and other factors whxch entered 1nto our phys1cal educatlon classes In November the class motored to the Un1V6FS1tY of Maryland as guests to a luncheon and football game Everyone enjoyed th1s tr1p very much Returnmg to school after the Chr1stmas hohdays our number decreased to thlrty four as Delores Hartly and Betty Falth wlthdrew Dur1ng the earher part of March the Problems of Democracy class V1S1tCd the State House at Annapol1s for the purpose of seelng our state government at work In the latter part of the day the class toured the Naval Academy We shall never forget th1s tr1p Throughout the rema1n mg port1on of our sen1or year several members worked d1l1gently on the Senlor Class Play and a few weeks later were guests of honor of the jun1or class at the Junlor sen1or prom As the graduatmg class of 1951 we the senlors have recorded here our work our moments of Joy and outstand1ng events however a 1nd1 v1duals we shall go out 1nto the world on our own and face the tasks of l1fe It IS at th1s t1me that we look back w1th grat1tude to our
