TRAILBLAZER I selected the name, Trailblazer , for our school's first year book because, our forefathers, the pioneers of America, ex- panded and blazed trails through the wilderness to procure their livelihood. In like manner, when we graduate from high school, we, too, shall be blazing our own trails through life, seeking a living of our own. To he this title seems especially appropriate for our year book because lear Spring is located near the base of the Appa- lachian Mountains which was indeed a great barrier to the early trail blazers of our country. One of the main pioneer trails was our present high way route 40 on which Clear opring is located. The proximity of this route influenced me in choosing Xrail- blaser . David Kalrath, '50. r — Isabel Pay Boyd fhe lass of '49 dedicates this Year Book to our classmate, Isabel Pay Boyd. CLASS HISTORY In the year 1945, 52 proud students entered their freshman year. Mr.Strite, a returned veteran, was homeroom teacher for the academic and general groups and did his best in algebra class to teach us equations and the process of finding x . The girls' and boys' vocational classes were under the direction of Miss Gross and Mr.Key as these students preferred pricking their fing- ers with needles and studying about farm life to pondering over algebra problems. Miss Smith, a new member of our faculty,strug- gled with us through Shakespeare's As You Like It and the do's and don'ts of grammar, while Mrs.Clapper taught us anc- ient history and civics. ' e had a new physical education instruc- tor,Miss Wolfinger.Mr.Snyder coached the boys in physical educa- tion and Mr.Haugh, had the unfortunate luck of attempting to teach us general science. Mrs. Cramer became our music teacher after Miss Crouse left to be married.By the end of the year we found that the following members of our class had withdrawn: Lorraine Myers,John Hart, Lloyd bridendolph, James Trumpower,Betty Wolverton Betty atruckman,Mary Jane hoema-eer,Elmer Smith,Warren Middlekauff, and hoy Mills. When we resumed our studies in the fall of '46,only 39 sopho- mores returned to school.Luring the Bummer Doris Anders and Patsy Myers moved to other communities and Edgar Murray and Arlis Shives thought they had absorbed enough knowledge to fulfill their needs. Mr. “augh, our homeroom teacher, taught us biology with the help of those wonderful workbooks.Mr.Strite had another headache when he tried to teach us plane geometry. The academic girls started first, year Latin under Mr.Miller, later replaced by Mt$6 Anderson. Mrs.Coffin resumed Mr.Miller'6 modern history for for the voca- tional 8tudents. Miss Carpenter and Miss Fros6 taught music and home economics, respectively. Miss mith was again on hand to help us conquer Julius Caesar and Miss Eastep was added to the faculty as our physical education instructor. Perhaps the most memorable event of the year was our biology trip to Washington where we toured many places of educational A 01 05 i At the close of the year,Betty Blair,Ethel Hart, and Louise Drury had moved to other schools and six others had chosen to withdraw and face the problems of everyday life. They were:Dana Repp,Ethel French,Ruth Hofe,Dorothy Feck,Helen Dmith and George Gordon. Thirty-one stucents entered the junior year with Mr.Babylon as homeroom and chemistry teacher. Our other Studies included: English under Miss Smith, who later changed her name to Mrs. Bowman; American history,Mr. Murray; Second year Latin, Miss Anderson;music,MlS8 Carpneter;physical education,Miss astep and Ur.Snyder; agriculture,Mr.Vlsy; and home economics,Mrs.Way.This proved to be a very full and successful year with the following events: A fashion show under the direction of Mrs.Way, class skating party, the selection and arrival of our class' rings, our American History trip to Annapolis where we toured the Naval Academy grounds and the State buildings, and last but not least, the preparation for the Junior-Senior Prom. hen June rolled a- round, our class was minus three members, namely: Mary McCarty, Betty Gladbill end Donald Suffecool. On September 15th,ofaly 27 stuoents entered their senior year as David Houck had not returned and another classmate,Isabel Boyd was confined to the hospital, e found that many changes confronted us when we went to assembly for our faculty intro- ductions.Mr.Peterman,who had served as principal for twenty-five years, was replaced by Mr.Herbert Logsdon, who introduced the following new teachers: Mrs.Robinette, music; Mrs.Brant, home eco- nomics; Mrs.Bounds, librarian;Miss Mert ,guidance counselor; Mr. Ely,Indus trial arts; ana Mr.Ware our homeroom as well as Prob- lems of Democracy teacher. We had many educational, financial and social responsibilities this year, but in the midst of all our activities we were sad- dened By the passing away of our classmate,Isabel Boyd. In connection with our studies in Problems of Democracy we visited the courts of hagerstown and a few went to the United “ations Conference at Lake Success, N.2£. Our pocketbooks were drained as a result of ordering name caras, invitations, caps, jackets, emblems, pennants and yearbooks. We wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to the Junior Class for a memorable Junior-Senior Prom and the favors we received. During the year Ralph Leigh joined the U.S. Navy leaving twenty-Mix memhers in the graduating class of '49. Jean Clopper, '49 Dorothy Spielman, '49 CLASS PROPHECY It is a beautiful spring day in 1959.The trees are bursting into blossom.High in the trees the birds are chirping their welcoming song to the season.Their joyous melody floats through the open win- dow of a building which we recognize as Victor Products.A man is sprawled in an easy chair having been lulled to sleep by the cheer- ful ditty of the birds. On the office door in bold letters we see written, hiwood M.Faith,manager.At his elbow lies a magazine with a cover showing an attractive girl with a charming smile which we recognize as Mary Lou Eword.Mary Lou gained her position as cover girl by advertising for Colgates. The sight of this former class- mate brings back fond recollections of his graduating class of '49.. He wonders what paths of life they have taken and in his dreams he pictures them as a success in their chosen ambitions. In his dreams Elwood is carried to Martin's airy ,owned and operated by Keefer Martin. His daily routine has been interrupted by a tour, of an agriculture class, through his dairy barn and milk bottling plant. The tour has been arranged by insturctor John Seibert who believes that the best form of education is in seeing the actual operation of a dairy farm. The high light of the tour is a milk test- ing demonstration given by Robert Moore. He is assisted in his de- monstration by his wife, the former Peggy Turner, who acquired her knowledge in this field from her Home Ec. course in school. As they are leaving one of the boys calls Mr.Seibert's attention to the comer stone of the bam which bears the name of Phillip Mills.Im- mediately John recognizes this as one of his old classmates. Mr. Seibert then points out the attractive features of the house which also had been cons true ted by Phillip Mills. Then they hurry to the bus where a smiling red-haired driver awqits them. The driver is none other than Bob veritts who has settled down to a more peace- ful life after encountering many exciting experiences as a tractor trailer driver. As they near the school they hear the harmonious voices from the open window of the music room where Miss Patricia Shank, their music teacher,is preparing the students for the annual spring operetta. The English students with their teacher,Miss Dorothy Spielman, are taking part in this operetta which was written by Miss Spielman. Elwood is rudely awakened from his dreams by the persistant ring- ing of the telephone.Much to his disgust it is the wrong number and he is about to reprimand the operator when he recognizes the voice as that of Janice Bhives, who is an operator for the Bell Telephone Company.Elwood frequently recognizes the voices of the operators since Christine Hawbaker often handles his long distance calls.Alice King, who had previously worked at the exchange, has been transferred to the Bell Company at Baltimore. After this interruption Elwood who is exhausted from the hubbub of the office dreams of his vacation which he plans to spen at The Corker Hunting and Fishing Loage which has be ________________________________U. built by Rodney Bhank from the money he received fcr winning the national ice skating contest.Elwood reeds a letter which he had re- ceived from Rodney that morning.Fran this letter he learns that 't'eepie and his Chirping Chicks will furnish themusic.Of course Peep- ie,the director,is none other than Wayne illSjHe also learns that Richard Startzman, who wishes to relax from his duties as an account- ant,has his reservation in for the same week. Elwood, wondering if his other friends have succeeded, recalls a conversation he had with his wife that morhing. She had recently been to Betty's Beauty Salon which Betty henebeck, local hair stylist has been operating for the past seven years.During their gossip session she learned that Jean Clopper, popular singer, had passed through town the week before and had stopped to get her hair done for a singing engagement which was scheduled for her at the Waldorf Astoria .Miss Shenebeck, commenting on the stunning clothes Jean wore, learned they had been purchased at Pat's Shoppe, where Patsy Barties had acquired the position of manager after showing her skill as a seams tress.ratsy seemea quite interested in the Conocochetgue speedway which was man- aged by Jack Mills, who also tested midget racers. She told Jean that the two men who had been hurt in a recent accident were recuperating at the local hospital.Their stay at the hospital was made more plea sant by the pleasing personalities of their nurses,Martha Miles and Mary Alice Binkley.Jean seems to know a great deal about each of her classmates. On a recent Hollywood tour, she had chanced to meet with Una M e Spaid, who has an office position with Metro-Ooldwyn Meyer. While Mrs.Faith was at the beauty salon Mildred Aershner stopped in for a chat on her way back to Washington to- resume her duties as secretary in the State department. As the five o'clock whistle blows and Elwood prepares to go home, he wonders if his wife will have returned from the Homemakers Meet- ing.The high light of the meeting was to be a demonstration given by the home demonstration agent,Fhyllis Eckstine.Phyllis, who has always been interested in this type of work, has been giving demon- strations throughout the state.Elwood finally arrives home and is greeted ty his wife, the former Betty Beauchamp. As they rela by the fireside, they hope that everyone is as happy and contented as they are.  WW________Ur 'V CLASS WILL By virtue of the fact that we r . e deep affection for those boys and girls who remain to rev f our memory, we do hereby de- dicate the following: Elwood Faith leaves that ter: ible P.D. book for Pete Younker to ponder over.
