A TEAM ACTION The basketball team began this season with the annual Lakeport Invitational Tournament. Leading the Cards were three regulars from last year's squad: Ron Timothy, Rod Williams, and Dave Thurston. The squad was further bolstered by members of last year's B team. The Cards swept through the tournament undefeated by smashing Lower Lake 38-15 and thereby winning the title for the second straight year. Next week-end saw Clear Lake traveling to Healdsburg for their annual tourna- ment. The Cards knocked off Geyserville in the opening round but were elimi- nated the next evening by a fine Analy squad. Following these two early-season tournaments the Cards began their practice tilts, sweeping them all. League play was looming in the near future. The Cards were led by Herb Butler and Mike Freeman at the forward slots, Dave Thurston at center, with Rod Williams and Ron Timothy at the guard posts. League play began Jan. 20 when the Cards hosted the Fort Bragg Timber- wolves, last year's Northwestern League champs. Employing a tight defense and sharp shooting, the Cards won 49-42. Lakeport then traveled to Ukiah and battled the Wildcats. After a nip-and- tuck first half Ukiah came on to defeat the Cards for their first league loss. The following week the Cards engaged the Willits Wolverines. Lakeport saw an early lead vanish in the fourth quarter but held on gamely to win 40-38. At the second half of the season, Lakeport and Fort Bragg were tied for the league lead. The crucial battle at Fort Bragg was next on the slate. Falling behind early in the game, the Cards could not overcome the pressure from the sharp shooting Timberwolves. The Fort Bragg cagers continued their calm confi- dent playing while the erratic Cards slipped behind ol-38. Back on their home floor the Cards next took on Ukiah. Still smarting from their loss at Ukiah, the Cards overcame their lead to go ahead with a rush at halftime. In this game the Cards reached their season peak. Ukiah's high-scoring offense came to a halt, while Lakeport, guided by floor-leader, Ron Timothy, continued to pull away. Dead-eye shooting by Mike Freeman and Dave Thurston, and the all-round abilities of Rod Williams and Herb Butler, paved the way to a decisive 63-43 win. The season ended in Willits, where a red-hot Willits team pushed off to a 9 point lead which they held until the fourth quarter. Fighting back gamely, the Cards closed to within 2 points. But the Wolverines stayed on top, 45-42, Thus the Cards tied with Ukiah for second place behind league champions, Fort Bragg.
