Last year we were lowly Freshmen, but now we're SOPHOMORES! We used our superior power over the poor little Freshmen by initiating them. But really, we weren't too bad. The first dance of the year, the Freshman Reception, was a huge success. Continuing our money making proiects, we gave a candy and cookie sale, which turned out very well, too. We chose our class rings Qwhich are beautifulD and eagerly looked forward to February when they arrived. We all have had a marvelous time this year, but just think: next year, we will be upperclassmen! But all in all, our four wonderful years go by too fast. Following a week of hot ordeals, Cpeppers, bouillon cubes, etc.D the Sophomores entertained us with a Freshman Reception, which was later returned with the traditional Sophomore Return. In order to raise money, the Freshmen were the first to have a cookie sale, which was a big success. We also sponsored candy sales and dances. The Cardinals won their first home game of the season defeating Cloverdale, It was an evenly matched game and one of the best played games of the year. Chantler scored the touchdown for Lakeport and also kicked for the extra point, Clear Lake marched on to St. Helena where they encountered a much larger and tougher football team. The Cards played a good ball game but were outweighed by the other team. Playing their third and last game away from home, the Cards got off to a slow start with Willits scoring twice in the first 3 minutes of the first quarter. Lakeport scored twice in the second half when Stone carried it across once and Whitlock making the other tally on a quarter- back sneak. C.L.U.H. was defeated by Half Moon Bay in the second home game of the season. It was very well played by both teams with Lyons and Marschall making the touchdowns and Chantler passing to Marschall for the extra point. The Fort Bragg Wolverines defeated the C.L.U.H. Cardinals in the third and last home game of the season. The Wolverines were big and fast and proved to be the better team. Having postponed the game on Armistice Day because of a flooded field this regularly scheduled home game was played at Upper Lake the following week. It was a nip and tuck battle all the way with the Cards threatening twice but never pushing it over. The Cougars scored in the fourth quarter with iust a few minutes to play but missed the extra point. Seniors completing their last football game for C.L.U.H. were: Nevel Lyons, Gene Chantler, Venn Marschall, lrl Rickabaugh, Bob McNeill, Fritz Budde. With only one varsity letterman remaining from the previous year and helped by three B's moving up to the A squad, our team entered the tournament as complete dark horses. Calistoga, Middletown, Lower Lake, Kelseyville, Upper Lake, and Lakeport com- prised the teams playing. To the amazement of all, the boys won every game played and won the championship of the Lakeport invitational tournament. The following week the team was invited to play in the Middletown tournament, which they won by defeating first Lower Lake, then Kelseyville, and then Lower Lake again. Rod Williams, first string guard for the Cards, was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. More practice followed. With Gene Chantler at Center, Ron Timothy and Dave Thurston at forwards and with Ron Ware and Rod Williams playing the guard spots our team continued to win As the end of January approached and the conierence season began to roll around Clear Lake Union High was on the long end of an impressive twenty three game winning streak The first league game of the season was played on our own court with Wnlluts It proved to be an easy victory the score being 60 27 and all of our players par ticlpated in the game The next league game was played against our arch rival Ukiah and on their own court lt was a hectic and exciting affair but Lakeport came out on too with a score of 39 37 The following league game with Fort Bragg turned out to be the first loss of the season The econd half of the season was not Quite so successful as the first but the team played excellent ball all season and can be rated as one of the better teams to play for Clear Lake Union High of many excellent teams our school has had The last and final game of the year was played against Balboa a school of 2500 students The first game was a surprise to everyone when Lakeport won by a score of 46 34 ln the varsity game Rod Williams our high point man of the year was miured and left the game in the first quarter Things looked dark particularly so when Balboa s all city forward continued to hit with a deadly eye At the final bell C L U H however was again ahead to rack up two victories in the final games of the year Only four Senior players will graduate Gene Chantler Venn Marschall Jim Morgan and Ron Ware Kelseyville Calustoga Middletown Upper Lake Upper Lake Lower Lake Kelseyvllle Lower Lake Boonville Boonville Upper Lake Kelseyville Willits Calistoga Ukiah Middletown Fort Bragg Wllllts Ukiah Middletown Fort Bragg Balboa CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH CLUH I ' ...... ,...,. ...V 2 l . . .
