Mr. Slattery, Mr. Miller, Mr. Callahan, Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Fuqua. fgazmzf af Husker The fine group of men we call our Board of Trustees has for its chairman Mr. Edwin Callahan, a former C.L.U.H. student. Ed is a Past Commander of the American Legion and is very active in community affairs. We can always count on his helping hand whenever we find the going tough. Mr. Earl Fuqua is a former C.L.U.H. student. Like Ed, Earl is also a Past Commander of the American Legion. Earl was quite an athlete at C.L.U.H. and he can always be found watch- ing the practice of our football or basketball teams. The Reverend David Miller, minister of the Lakeport Methodist Church and a member of the Rotary Club, is always assisting children or listening to the problems of the C.L.U.H. students. He blessed the school when he sent his two very athletic sans to our school, Former C.L.U.H. student, Mr. Jack Slattery, who was in business in San Francisco for a number of years and is now a prosperous pear grower in Finley, is another member who can be counted on to give the students any necessary assistance. Mr. Lloyd Hamilton is a graduate of Visalia High School and is now a prosperous pear grower. The splendid cooperation of all the board members has made it possible for our school to have a full time shop program this year. The board has purchased land to enlarge the schools athletic fields and hopes to fill the swamps and overflow lands in order to provide the larger athletic fields. This will enlarge and beautify our school grounds. The board hopes to maintain the high academic standards for future students. 5 - -,,. ,I 5 M ..,., g . N 4 , i t VX . Lakeport went down to defeat 20-l9 in a hard fought game. A bad pass from center caused a safety and the downfall of Lakeport. Under the efficient instruction of Mrs. Jones, the girls of C.L.U.H. are very effectively instructed in the various phases of homemaking. There are seven phases taught in this school and they include the study of foods, clothing, health, housing, children, relationships, and manage- ment. These different phases are so divided that they require three years of study to cover them. To further the efficiency of the homemaking department some new appliances have recently been added. They are as follows: two electric stoves, on automatic washer, a dryer, and two sewing machines. These appliances make it easier to finish the required work in each class. The department has three unit kitchens. Each kitchen is so arranged that groups of four to six girls can work in each kitchen. Through movies, filmstrips, demonstrations and lectures by outside speakers the homemaking course is made broader and more interesting. Standing left to right C. Brown, D. Edwards, Y. Marston, B. Those boys who have had no previous shop experience are allowed one period a day. Boys who have had agriculture shop experience or other shop experience are permitted to take two periods a day. There were a few iobs around the school that needed to be doneiso the boys in shop were called upon to do them. Two of those jobs included the making of music stands for the band and carrying cases for the band hats. The individual projects were primarily woodworking jobs, such as radio cabinets, record cabinets, end tables, lawn chairs, wall shelves, bed-side stands, coffee tables, stock feeders, bookends, gun cabinets, gun racks, and book cases. Some very nice nut bowls and fruit dishes were turned out on the lathe. Some time was spent in improving the physical set-up in the building by making tool panels and similar items necessary to have a well run industrial arts program. Picture l: W. Furtado welding a metal strip. Picture 2: Mr. Davis shows B. Hickok what finished products should look like. Picture 3: When they are done L. McDaniel will have a radio cabinet, J.
