During the year a number of doctors, professors, and others interested in the scientific field have pre- sented informative programs to the members. The Science Club has aroused an interest in science among our students. 1963 Science Fair HM QUAST First place winner in physical science division. Here is a review of the season: Clayton opened the season with a non-conference tilt with Wen- dell, there. It was the Blue Comets all the way with Al Jones starting the scoring with a safety. Earl Oldham, Ronnie Pittman and Glen Spence added the other points as Clayton swept by Wendell 22-0. Ronnie Bull Pittman led Clayton to a 6-6 tie with the pre-sea- son conference favorite, earned, the following week. Harris and Karlton Jackson added the other points. High posted Cary had to make a comeback before they could win over the Comets 19-14. Pittman had led the Comets to a 14-0 half-time lead. Pittman and Spence each scored twice in 31-20 Comet win over Fuquay. The Millbrook game here was, as an area news- paper put it, an. early birthday present for head coach Nixon. Even though Ronnie Pittman was lost this season early in the game, the Blue Comets put on a great show and beat the undefeated Wildcats by a score of 13-7. And again down at Selma, the boys won by out- swimming the Yellow Jackets. Clayton's Tiny White scored on the first play from scrimmage as he scamp- ered around right end for 60 yards. Final score: 27-13. In final game of the '63 season, Benson Got the Bucket, as they snibed us 21-19. Sue Pulley hits So' I fouled Out! two for the Comets C eerleaders With a swirl of blue skirts and a resounding Give me a C, the cheerleaders helped inspire Clayton football and basketball teams. Composed of nine regulars and two alternates, the squad gets hoarse at all the home and out-of-town games. Comet sup- porters are directed by head cheerleader Kathy Hare. Each spring, the quietness of the school is temporarily interrupted by shrill voices, as girls compete for the positions on the squad. From these candidates a committee of teachers and coaches chooses nine regular cheerleaders. These girls sponsor pep rallies and the sale of victory ribbons to arouse school spirit. The 1964 team looks as if it may have a successful year, although it will be without the services of high-jumper Harold Holloway and pole-vaulter Billy O'Nei1. Returning to this years' team is Jimmy Whitley who set the conference 880 record at 2 minutes, 5 seconds last year and then bettered that by 3 seconds. S. displays hesitant eagerness, makes the same mistakes, and is just as uncertain as the many who have gone before. To a freshman, high school life is sometimes new and different. He finds, however, friendly faces, teachers eager to help, courses easier than expected, and of course, that long-awaited study hall. All isn't play! Good grades suddenly take a new meaning. .One learns to cram exams, and studying past eleven o'clock becomes common to meet more difficult s academic demands. Eventually the seasons change and a sophomore arises. for Lane Adams Don Allen Janice Anderson Judy Anderson Mary Auton Charlene Barbour Danny Barbour Joe Barnes Sylvia Barnes June Bennett Brenda Benson Buster Benson C ass of 1967 Margaret Benson Roger Benson Myrtle Bissette Phil Bledsoe Donnie Boyette Larry Boyette Ricky Boyette Jerry Broadwell Gary Bunn Roy Butler Linda Carrall Janie Chappell Ronald Churchwell Eugene Creech Judy Creech 'Vcrry Crocker Connie Crumpler Ronnie Crumpler Cornelia Daniels Veronica Daniels Pat Duncan Jerry Dupree Craig Edgerton Betsy Ellis Douglas Ellis Van Garris Beverly Gower Susie Gower Eddy Green Edith Green Susan Harrison David Hickman Jimmy Hicks Johnny Hogg Linwood Hogg Phyllis House xx of 1967 Karen Jackson Wilma Jernigan Betty Johnson Betty Jones Danny Jones La Rue Jones Betsy Lambert Jack Lee Donna McDowell Pat McGee Chris Markerson Clorie Mills 'wx if 9 ' Q 11. 5? The sophomore year is the year for knowing. Gone is the uncertainty and strangeness associated with one as a freshman. As a sophomore one knows: the campus - which teachers give the hardest exams - who's in what club - who the PC's are - when Happy Hours are - all campus slang. As a sophomore one has definite opinions, has his parents all figured out, and in short has the world by the tail. Graduation is away off in the hazy future. One knows that there lies ahead of him at least two more years of high school life, so let the good times roll. fag' Q f, ,ff W 1 ., U g - mp.. The boisterous spirit of the sopho- more year has subsided. The senior maturity has not yet come upon him. After elections one assumes leadership posts in major positions. Gone are the pains of required courses. One faces foreign language, term papers, and T.V. history classes. Finally the reward is at hand - May comes, a few finals, a summer, and a senior. 1 9 it . Years at Clayton have been fleeting ones which were lived to the fullest and shall always be I cherished among the best. These years have been formative and have sup- plied the materials, the blueprints, the concrete, and the marble of our personal construction. The final finishing, the molding of the elements, may come later, or may never be achievedg but one can always appreciate the start which Clayton High School has given. 5 QW W ,, ,Q , Class of 1964 MASCOTS '64 Vickie Waters Richie Johnson HAROLD ADAMS JA CKIE BA RBOUR RON NIE BA TT EN BETTY BIVIANO lass 1 BREN DA BLIN SON TOMMY BLINSON I lx B of 1964 GLENDA BRADY JACKIE BROWN RUSSELL BOONE TIM BOYETTE JIM BUTLER CHA RLES BYRD Class LARRY COATS SUE CREECH of 1964 JANE DA LY JOHNNY DIX ON LURA CROWDER A NN CRUMPLER LINDA DODD CHA RLOTTE DUNCA N 1 JUDY DUPREE FRED EA TMAN HSS I A I , l . 4 M v li 2 1 of 1964 CHARLOTTE GIVENS LOUIS GODWIN , WAYNE EVANS PEGGY FLOWERS KATHY HA RE JAMES I-IICKS C ass IAN HOCKADAY JOHN NY HONEYCUTT of 1964 LINDA LANGDON .TULIAN LYNCH PHYLLIS JOHNSON A L JONES CAROL MCGEE LOU MA SSEY L5 ' C ass JUDY MOORE WILLA MAE OAKLEY of 1964 CLINE PAGE HM PAINTER EARL OLDHAM WATSON O'NEIL WUI?
