We attempted to construct a valuable souvenir of our high school years and to weld the hearts of our students to our Alma Mater. If we have succeeded, then we feel this annual will have justified its existence. ai W , v X A AVAA 1 f af fu ' :-, . ' , 1, 1 M I ef Q f X .. ,f it ' -7 if s ,, 1. , I Vt Q Q ,,.,. Mrs. Janie Gulley and Miss Brady made us forget our fright and feel at ease. ln this first grade we started our reading, riting and rithmetic. These first studies were continued in the second grade under Miss Britt and Miss Balls. The next four years were much easier because we were more accustomed to the way of school life. With such fine teachers as Welch, Satterfield, Godwin, Poole, Woodall, Uzzle, Deaton and Martin help- ing us, the years in grammar school passed rapidly. The seventh grade was not too bad since we were gently boosted by Miss Gray and Miss Tew. Miss Gray gave us a foundation for English which has helped us throughout high school. The transition from the seventh to the eighth grade was a glorious one. This glory was shattered when the assignment of making a North Carolina notebook was thrown in our face. Some way with the aid of Miss Taylor and Miss Messer we completed this task and passed on to the ninth grade. As green freshmen, we were very confused on the first day, since high school is quite different from the grammar grades. With the guidance of Mr. Benton, our homeroom teacher, we finally learned the way of high school life. The members of our class started making their way into the high school activities, especially the boys, for when we were still freshmen our football team won the State Championship and, I am sure, they could not have done it without the aid of the green freshmen. When we finally became sophomores, we felt we were getting on in life. We soon felt differently when we were told the subjects we would have to take. Although our boys didn't win the State Football Champi- onship, our girls brought honor by winning the County Basketball Championship. Our sophomore year was a difficult one, but with the aid of Miss McMillan we came through with flying colors. Our junior year passed rather quickly. Miss Mac went up with us to help raise all that money seniors need. The football team, again that year, lost out in the semi-finals of the tournament. That year most of the first team players came from our class. The girls won the County Basketball Championship again that year. After struggling through the junior play, Seventeen Is Terrific, we were all set to start planning for the Junior - Senior Banquet. After deciding to have as our theme The End of The Rainbow, we began the hard, but joyous task of preparing for the banquet. Finally a tired, but happy group of juniors enjoyed a banquet and prom with a group of smiling seniors. Now we come to the peak of our high school days, our senior year. The task of earning money with which to go to Washington proved to be a tough job. Although our boys didn't win a football trophy, they had a successful season and we were quite proud of them. Jennings Gower, an outstanding athlete in our class, brought quite an honor to the school when he was elected to be on the six-man All-State Team. Our senior play, a mystery comedy, Finders Creepers, was a great success. Many hours of delight have filled us in these past twelve years - But, now we come to the end of the first big chapter in our life. We must put aside these happy memories and souvenirs and face this new adventure that lies ahead with grim determination and courage to succeed whatever be the test and we shall always remember that it will be with the ropes of the past that we will ring the bells of the future Historian Anna Ross Jones . . ., . . Soon we'll be departing, to return no more: To study those lessons we first came here for. But we'll always remember all the glorious days, We recall together each in his own way. To separate, to follow the different paths that we choose, Requires advice that each classmate can use. And for help and ideas we know where to turn, To the dear old faculty, willing and stern. So as each of us travel down the hard road of life-- We can remember all these things whether of joy or of strife. But as we are leaving, we would each like to say-- Farewell, and thanks for brightening our day. As there has been no possible chance of a reunion before, we are planning to meet on May 28th of this year. You ask about the members of our class. I sincerely hope this bit of information I have will help you, since you left Clayton immediately after our graduation. Rex Godwin and Bobby Adams are co-owners of Steer-In-Grill. Janice Wall has really gone places! She is employed as script girl for the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis shows. I was really supprised to find Mary Bledsoe teaching English at Smithfield. It took her 3 years to pass English II, remember? Thomas Woodell has his own beauty salon. His capable assistant is Nelson Jones. I guess Tafon really works. Robert Hambone Hamilton is now feather-weight box- ing champion of the world. But, of course, you have seen that in the papers. You know too, that Sybil A. Eakes has just been selected Mrs. North Carolina and will soon compete for Mrs. America. Jerry Capps, whom we thought had such a promising football career, is a jet pilot in the Navy. The former Annie Hogg has just been granted her third divorce. Rumors are that she will next marry Clark Chandler. Robert Teeny Holt is acting as a replacement for Nat King Cole since the King recently lost his voice. Teeny's first record is now on sale. After winning 864, 000 on the program, 364, O00 Question, Katherine Poole became interested in TV. She will next star on the Howdy Doody show. Imogene and Bobby Davis have opened their own Stuckey's Station in Key West, Florida. ' A new speed law has been passed in North Carolina since Aubrey Ellis and Billy Daughtry were elected to the State Highway Patrol. The speed limit now is 70 miles per hour. Anyone buying Mademoiselle magazine will delight to discover toprated model, Anna Ross Jones, wearing a new creation by designer, Karen Cobb. Remember how informative Billy Mahaffey always was? He is on the way of being one of the world's top scientists. Watch for big things! Shelby Hill deserves congratulations. She has just received her fourth stripe in the WAC's The Armed Forces are lucky! Celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary recently, Rosie, Grallon, and children were guests of Barbara Uohnsonj and her husband, a former pen pal. Sherwood Hill has his own Casino in Las Vegas.
