Our teachers' aim was this: That we keep our goal in sight, Never ceasing to work and strive with all our might, With patience and with love, given without care, They have been beside us, our burdens to bear. We 've worked hard, but it has been fun. Many people we have metg here lasting friendships we've begun. tw X' gn, W 4 a- - , lu U . x. ,om if M ' ll V' f fill if f ,f 11' W 0 4 Wy 5, ' A! ,ff V XS X sl!-, , X ,- I 14-NX Q , 1 5 1' mf' ff N xx I . We are Seniors nowg we have traveled thus far. We stand before the door, waiting to lift the bar. We lift the bar, and unlatch the door-- The door to the future a place we haven't seen before, We've reached a point in our quest where recognition now is due. Yet once again with heads held high our search we do renew. For never ending is our quest, But all we know is: we'll do our best. --Ann Shehdan Class Poet Dear Diary, Tonight we, the class of '55, make our last appearance together. For twelve long years we've been classmates, Let's turn back the pages and renew our memory of these years. September, 1942. At last we are in school, snaggled toothed, of course , and just alittle scared. Miss Janie and Katherine Harrison are our very firstteach- ers. We are going to learn the 3R's, whatever they are. September, 1943. We already know how to spell cat and rat, and we know that lplus 1 equals 2, so we think now that we are ready to learn something really big. Miss Britt and Miss Batts are here to help us. September, 1944. We are really learning fast, here we are in the third grade already. Arithmetic stumps us a little, but we'll pull through with Mrs, Welch and Miss Satterfield. September, 1945. Guess what? We're taking up a new subject this year-- geography. lsn't that thrilling! Mrs.Poole and Miss Godwin say we'll like that. September, 1946-1947, We're here at the gate of grammar school now and we're a-larning, oops, learning some important English, writing letters and themes 11000 wordsj. Miss Woodall, Miss Uzzle, Mrs, Crutchfield, and Mrs. Martin are our worried teachers. September, 1948-1949. We wonder if the 7th grade is hard. Miss Gray and Miss Tew say not if we study. Miss Tew is going to try to teach us a little about U.S.Government, and she says when we get to be 21 we can vote for the President of the U. S, She says that one of us might grow up to be President. We wonder. a mm rm i i tm , T 1 September, l95O. Now, as the graduating class of the ele- mentary grades, we look back at those little first graders. Goodness, were we ever that scared and snaggled toothed? We're eagerly awaiting our entrance into high school. September, 1951, We are now the holders of that ever so famous title Green Freshmen. With our teachers Fleming, Ovvnby, and Hicks, we are taking our places among the many different activities. We hope to show Clayton High what we can do. This year Mr. Stephens is our homeroom sponsor, as well as our math teacher, His words, is that not so ring in our ears. Mr, Waters comes to us as the new prin- cipal of Clayton High, filling the place of Mr. O. B, Welch. September, 1952. Our Sophomore year, Miss Mac, The Daisy Chain, all combined into one make a thrilling memory for us to treasure. September, 1953. We are now nearing the end of our journey with Miss Taylor, our homeroom teacher, and the others, Braswell and Patterson, who we think are destined to have a little trouble with us, a happy-go-lucky group. Our Jun- ior Play, Hillbilly Weddin, and the Negro Minstre1 are surely grand experiences in this school year, September, 1954. Our Senior Year is the most welcome and busiestyear of all. The Senior Play, Father Knows Best g the '55 Annual, ordering graduation invitations, and caps and gowns add to our excitement, The biggest problem of all, raising money to go to Washington, includes lots of hard work, selling Christmas cards and preparing turkey suppers, with Mrs, Anderson, our senior sponsor willing to help us, Yes, at last we, the Seniors of '55, reach our peak of success and are ready to seek and to find a higher goal. 1 m fr Y 4, S no S E fb X 'ik T S' l , lil ! In it is news of all the class of '55, It was interesting to Frances and me and l'm sure will be to the entire class wherever they are. Jimmy Lassiter was recently elected mayor. His big problem is trans- forming the water tank into the shape of an airplane, Margaret Medlin, Anne Ellis, and Mavis Matthews are Clayton's new and first truant officers. Their main object is to cut out Clayton's tardiness. Patricia Brannan has opened up her own beauty shop. lncidentally, it's for redheads only. David Allen is now principal of C. H. S. Out go the minus points, says David. Marie Snipes has opened up her own stationery store, The main reason is that Glenn has enlisted for ten more years. He takes girls home to lunch. Last news of Lois Wall told us she was in Africa. You guessed it--wasn- ing hair. ' Leon Daughtry is the Chief of Police in Clayton.
