ss 'im' To relate in detail the History of the Class of l9b9, would be to write a long, long book. Indeed our career through both high school and grammar school has been marked by various accomplishments, as well as by various de- feats, but through it all we come, smiling at the thoughts of our success, sad at the thought of farewell. The year 1937 found a group of frightened youngsters entering the first grade with Miss Gulley and Miss Swain as the first teachers to have to cope with our first days in school. We still hold hearty appreciation for the thoughtfulness and patience of these first teachers, as well as all our oth- er teachers, friends and parents who did so much in setting our sails for a long voyage in life--twelve years. We might sometimes, however, as would occasionally saying goes--kids will be kids. Finally in the fall of l9b5, a happy-go and girls entered Clayton High School. All not have shown our appreciation, play a prank. But as the old lucky band of nnonchalantn boys were thrilled at the idea of be- ing in High School, although we proved to be very ngreenu. Before we became accustomed to the schedule, some might have been absent from class half the period and show up saying he had gone to the wrong class. Nevertheless, when the year came to an end, we were getting somewhere, as we approached the second rung of our High School Ladder. Two new members joined our class the freshmen year, Geraldine Johnson and Josephine Harrison. The class of 1946 found us Sophomores, but the class proved to be much smaller, as some had unfortunately been left behind. Thinking we were expen ienced proved different, when the dignified Seniors were around. All yearned for the day when we, ourselves, would be Seniors. Our instructors this year were Miss Hollowell, Mr. Crutchfield, Miss Spears and Miss Powell. Important events that happened in the tenth grade were the carrying of the rose arbor during the commencement and the entertaining of the Seniors in the spring. Oh, would the day ever come when we should march down the aisle! Miss Layton was our Junior teacher. Other teachers were Miss Ferrell, Mr. Crutchfield and Miss Spears. The work had become more difficult now. Latin proved to be too hard for some of the students and the number on roll dropped down to seven. Miss Spears taught the girls how to cook and ang while Mr. Crutchfield did his best to teach us Math. Our Junior play nheady Made Familyn was presented this year with Miss Layton as supervisor. The result was a big success. this year's activities and one which is a pleasant One notable event of memory was the Junior- Senior Banquet given May 17, l9h8 at the Club House. Two other girls the first of the next term. Activities of every sort crowded this year and it sped by all too swiftly. Finally came that day of days for which we had strived three for four! long, long years--the day on which we were officially called Seniors--wise, experienced, dignified Seniors! On this, the last rung of our ladder, was added to our class Myrtle Edwards. For our home room teacher we had Miss Aileen Reel. Others on the faculty were Miss Godley, Mrs. Young, Miss Ma- jette, Mr. Crutchfield and Mr. Welchz Our number on roll had decreased to eighteen from approximately forty or forty-five during our younger high school days. This year every activity in which Seniors have participated seemed to really blossom forth and be very worthwhile. The Senior play, NBolts and Nuts' was a nbig hitu. We have planned to go to Washington since our Junior year and have had many joys in collecting our money. Thus, through tears,through laughter, through fears, through joy, through work, through play, we have reached the top of the ladder, and as we, the Senior Class of l9h9, understand our endeavors,we have achieved the pinnacle of success!- To Mr. Welch, we express our gratitude in helping us through Clayton School and also wish other students who attend this dear school, success in the future.
