TH E DDETIQY DAGES A TRAVELER THINKING ABOITT PLACES HE HAS SEEN HENRI POTE, 1940 That was a night- Lights flashing on the shore And sending sparkles Uver the gently lapping water. Phosphorescent waves Broke from the bow As the boat glided softly along . . The first time I saw the Pyramids Was on a bright, cool june day In early morning Which in more temperate, Misty climes Would have seen the Crass and flowers jewel bedecked with dew. So clear they stood, And their hard brown stones Seemed like the Warm sides of ancient mountains Entombing Archaean majesties From the gaze of all times . . . The jungle, with its tepid Sluggish rivers flowing Beneath the twilight shade Of years of thick green vegetable growth With sun and tropic rains. Among the branclzes Parrots flew, and monkeys swung To the tune of savage drums Beaten by primitive, dark-skinned men Who, after all, were more Lazy than ferocious. Their women do the work- Wlzat there is of it- Plant beans and corn, Re-root young banana trees, Tend the children- Carefree little ones who Make mudpies and catch beetles, And poke twigs at small scorpions- At least, they do if someone hasnlt been there and Civilized them into schools and white men's clothes. SWIMMING JANE 'rRUAX, 1940 Left arm over, Let out breath- Right arm over, Dee breath P . I wonder if I'll ever be able to swim as well as she. Such grace and swiftness-oh dear, that's not for me. Left arm over, Look at that divel When I learn to swim, 1'll try that then. Deep breath. SPIDER STANLEY YFAXVES, 1941 Long legs treading in ominous silence- Button black eyes glaring glassily- Squat, hairy body lurking- Black, bloated abdomen- Thick webs of sticky silk- Long legs treading in ominous silence- A spring! Poor fly, he flew too late. STEEL MILL SCo1'r CLARK, 1941 Groaning, sweating, human energy Turning out steel by the ton- The thrill of power- Satisfaction of work well done. AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE REBECCA BEAN, 1941 Dreamers build high castles in the air And dwell within, Immune to worldly care, and woe. Dreamers keep companions mystijied With actions that seem So preoccupied and slow, Tho' dreams are frail And seldom last for long- I know. MEMORY DRESS ALICE VANDEGRIET, 1940 The sweet joy it has brouglzt me ls not so unusual When you consider How his eyes seemed bright When I first appeared In the shimmering rays of The moonlight. And it seems that I should love This pale blue gown For its clinging grace as we Clided beneath tlze arbor dulled By grapes, A gown, then untouched by the Slippery, grey fingers of life. But then, you could not expect Tlze qualities of wispy lace To bind him here by my side Forever and a day. Or did I suppose the silver-touched stars With their mocking eyes of gold Would run their gauntlet of charms Through a part Of his heart? Perhaps the reckless notes of Some tune To which we danced and often sang Will sing again in his heart As they sometimes do in mine.
