LITERARY Ole Bull was Norway s most famous violinist After touring hrs native country he went to Paris where he heard the wizard violinist Paganini He began a course of hard work in the hope of rrvalrng Paganinl He acquired a wonderful technique and speedily achieved world wide fame by his brilliant and expressrve playing Gunnar Wennerberg a Swedish poet musician and politician was born at Liakopxng where his father was parish priest The remarkable production of Wennerberg s The Boys presented that which was unique and attractive IH the curious university life of Sweden In 1866 he succeeded Fahlcrantz as one of the eighteen members of the Swedish Academy Through the works of these composers and musicians Scandanavia has contributed to the musical heritage of the world Compiled from Grade 12 reports by SHIRLEY Rornrseac- 1939 OLD SWEDES CHURCH Gertrude Lenox, 7R COMMITTEE of six members of the seventh grade was chosen to V1Slt Old Swedes Church in Wilmington Delaware Rev Charles A Rantz rector of the Church of the Ascension made an appointment for us w1th Mr Bell Vicar of Old Swedes Church and on the day set in january we visited the historic church Mr Bell told us that Old Swedes was built in the year 1698 under the direction of Rev Erick Bjork He said the church had been abandoned as a place of worship in 1830 when the congregation moved to a new one at Fifth and King Streets lt was in a state of dilapidation until Henrietta M Allmond a member left a legacy of six hundred forty dollars for the purpose of putting it in a condition fit for holding worship The church was re opened for divine servlce August 21 1842 the left side of the altar It is the orlglnal one and is said to be the oldest in the United States lt was made of boards brought by the members of the congregation Peter Peterson brought three Lucas ltelham brought one Asmund brought two sticks Brewer Senecke brought one log and Eric of Cranehook brought seven boards Mr Bell showed us an inscription on a tablet which identifies the church as Holy Trxnlty Old Swedes Church consecrated Trinity Sunday 1699 There are also some tablets on the floor and on the walls One of them was erected in loving memory of Phoebe George and her son Another one is in memory of Thomas Francis Bayard On this tablet are the Ten Commandments which were written there because he liked them so much Around the organ are the graves of four babies They were Brewer Senecke who died in 1709 Peter Biorck who died in 1710 Petrus Hessellin who died in 1716 and Emmanuel Hessellin who died IH 1719 Beside the organ there is an original church bench which is over two hundred years old The memorial windows in Old Swedes Church are very beautiful with Biblical pictures on them These windows are in memory of prominent citizens of the state There are still some of the original pews in the gallery They were restored 1n the year 1899 by the Colonial Dames of America The stairway to the gallery has been moved from the inside to the outside of the church Therefore you must go outside of the church to get to the gallery The original doors are still IH use They are put together by wooden pegs and turn on strap hinges The orlginal latches are on the doors They are very large and awkward Many unusual things are found IH the church such as the first money box of Wilmington a brick altar which has been covered with marble and a very large Bible which was presented by the Prince and Princess of Sweden in the year 1926 The Blble is written in the Swedish language lt IS protected by a glass case , . . . . . . , . , , , . . y . . . y . .
