SPORTS ................ LEADERSHIP ...... ACADEMICS ..,....,... UNDERCLASSMEN SENIORS ................. ..,'-Nu' ' , --as , Built in 1926 Clay Senior High School was named after Jeremiah Clay on whose farm the school was built. The first graduating class- that of 1930-consisted of twenty-one students. Among the extra-curricular activities were four literary societies, an annual staff, a newspaper staff, an orchestra and glee club, and a Student Council. Both the junior High and the Senior High were housed in the same building. In 1928, 1930, 1938, and 1940 wings were added to the school. The stadium was erected in 1947. In 1952 the present building was raised. The Junior High remained in the old building which became known as the Annex. After the building of other Junior High schools in the area, the Annex was used to supplement the main building's class- rooms. Over the years the curriculum has changed greatly. Today there are several courses offered that were rarely offered in public schools when the school was first built. Among them are Latin, Spanish, French, Chemistry, Physics, Machine Shop, Business Education, and the Vocational Courses. Today and in the years to come, Clay will have an increasing number of students grad- uating as it expands to meet the needs of the community. 15 aa- . .av l 1. ,- fi affix 1 , ' rrifff' . .. -Q U! 1--ew. Our number is 1968, and 1968 promises to be the label attached to a year of strife. The strug- gle of Man is being fought not only on the battle- fields and in the nation's capitals, but in the minds of men as Well. The battle for advance- ment of civilization is being waged in laboratories around the world. The courts are legislating for the rights of all men. And, in the schools a small pod of educators are beginning to realize that you can not teach the future by looking into a rear view mirror. Perhaps this is good. Maybe all of this colossal conflict will endear this, our year, to future generations. But in the midst of such colossal efforts, the common things dear to life may be forgotten. Mlho will remember this as the year of the mini skirt? lfVill historians recall our hops, our games, our school mates? lfVho will remember 1968 as being important because of the little things that happened to us during its reign? Possibly no one. Yet, are not the ordinary things at the very core of life's most intriguing episodes? We, the Crystal staff, believe this is true, and because we believe this, we offer the 1968 Crystal as a record, as a log of the small stuff of life. May your memory's thirst be quenched herein, again, and yet again. --1 i .4- ' A 1 -1 I 3 . -JF. This year the team maintained an overall record of four wins, four losses, and two ties. They placed second in the Great Lakes League standings. The season open- ed as the Eagles repaid Lima Shawnee for the defeat they were handed last year. The stiffest competition was undefeated Whitmer, a team the Eagles battled to a 6-6 tie. Spirit was high as the annual Clay vs. Cardinal Stritch game ap- proached. The Eagles maintained their drive and spirit even though the Cardinals won. No- vember 3, the night of the Clay vs. Waite game, was Coach Federici.l3ay. The squad, in trying to honor their coach with a victory, battled Waite to 21 scoreless finish- the field after he injured his ankle. Big Guys Have 1 Big Hearts l The pride in earning a varsity letter and being voted into the Varsity C club represents more than just honor. It stands for the clean sports- manship, clean living, and the better under- standing between the athletes themselves, the faculty, and administration. These boys were allowed to remain active members only after they had maintained athletic eligibility, re- mained in good standing with the administration and community, and brought no discrimination to Clay by their actions. This year the Varsity C filled ninety-two baskets of donated food and clothing for the needy families of the Oregon area. Crystal Staff Pushes To illeet Bea-dlines In April 1967 the editors for the 1968 Crystal were announced. The new staff began their journalistic efforts by planning the supplement. In order to gain a better insight into the plan- ning and production of a yearbook, the editors attended the journalism Workshop at Ohio Uni- versity. While there, they planned the 1968 Crystal with the aid of experienced instructors. Late in September the school signed a contract with the Gray Printing Company. Having a new printer, the staff had to adjust to new methods of preparing layouts for printing. Mlords such as paste-ups and cropping became a part of their vocabulary. It was easy to say the words, but the trouble began when they had to learn what the words stood for. The staff made the adjustment easily. Each day they learned more about yearbook planning and editing. The new Crystal Staff members arc Kay Fletcher, Trudy McLaughlin, jenny Schimming, Diane Szymanski, Putty Mason. Under the direction of their new advisor, Mr. Pratt, the Eagle Staff worked hard to get the proper news articles, advertisements, pictures and special feature items. Once again money saving subscriptions, as well as single issues, were eagerly purchased by the students. In the fall, the senior members of the football team and the senior cheerleaders were honored in the paper with an interview and a picture. This year the staff sponsored a dance in the school gymnasium and had a booth at Fun Night. Preparation Paves Way For Choral Success The Clay High School A Cappella Choir con- sisted of 48 seniors and 47 juniors who had pre- viously taken Glee Club for at least one year. During the Christmas holiday season the choir was busy preparing lor its many concerts, the biggest one being the Vespers Service on Decem- ber 17. Other activities during this time were the all-school assembly and the caroling of the seniors through the halls of area schools. The choir entered competit-ion among many other schools, and because the director, Mr. Bernard Falor, prepared them well they hoped for a first place and the chance to go on to the district, then state contests. The Limelighter's assembly and the Easter as- sembly were other show times of the choir. When springtime rolled around, many choir members participated in the school musical. ' fav, 49.4. gpg L.. Footblz ll Performlznccs Highliglzt Band's Year The Clay I-Iigh parade, marching, and concert band was led through its drills by Mr. Charles Neal. Our band began its new year by vying for first place in the Strawberry Festival, June 10, and the Fireman's Convention, june 17. The Oregon Day Parade also highlighted its summer parade schedule. The last two weeks of August meant long, hard drill and practice for the band members. Sore feet and tired muscles were contagious. All of the hard work was worth it. The football half- time shows were new and refreshing. The twirl- ing of the fire baton by drum major Rick Hfebb, senior recognition night, the bull fight per- formance, and the well executed precision rou- tines added to the splendid musical arrange- ments. This year a dance band, composed of band members, was formed. This band participated in the Specialties. A few eligible band members also entered the Solo and Ensemble Contest March 2. FHA Branches 0ut To Food Service Clay has started a new program which is part of the curriculum in only two other Toledo- Oregon area schools. This is the Food Service class open only to seniors. It has been designed for those who don't like the regular classroom activity but who want to further their education while working at the same time. Food Service teaches the student the prepara- tion and catering of food, how to assist a head cook, and the proper methods of serving in a cafeteria. 'Working with local business establish- ments, the teachers set up a job schedule for Food Service students work at the junior breakfast. each studentg then during the second semester the student spent the afternoons working on the job outside the school. After completing this course as a basic ground- work boys may go on to chef's school in New Haven, Connecticut. Mr. VVood attended Auston College, Texas, and received his Bachelor and Master's Degree there, majoring in history and minoring in psychology. Upon returning to Ohio, Mr. YVood enrolled in a project to train individuals for the adminis- tration of schools, and later acted as the principal of elementary and high schools. He is now in his thirteenth year as a superintendent of schools. Under his supervision, Clay's administrative staff directs and counsels student activities, and maintains Clay's standards as an outstanding high school. l Mr. Victor Wood, zi new face to Gregoniaus, is the Oregon schools new superin- tendcnt. Teachers Contribute T irne And Interest To Student Projects The many wonders of science and mathematics fascinate the students of Clay High School. From the microscopic amoeba to the complicated cal- culus problems, scientific reasoning was taught by the faculty members to their receptive stu- dents. Curiosity was aroused by the intricate way in which our number system was developed, and excitement erupted when students finally discov- ered what made a chemical explode or a falling object accelerate. Several of the teachers spent their free time serving as advisors of Bio-Phy-Chem, Math Club, or Chess Club. At the same time they helped students develop and prepare projects which were presented at the l967-68 Science and Math Fair. .Q S H ., F Q , 1- ml s uf I L r ,Q e t Early in his first year at Clay. Language Teachers Pronaote Foreign Customs and Ideas Learning could not exist without simple com- munication and the acknowledgment of what others have learned and written for us to read. Speaking, in any language, expresses ideas. Thus one must develop a talent to tell his ideas to others. Clay gave every student the opportunity to learn this talent by such courses as French, Latin, Spanish, and speech and offered to its students a library well-equipped for their needs. Foreign languages were taught by using many devices, such as records, tape recorders, and the language lab. These combined to make speak- ing, reading, and understanding a foreign lan- guage a little easier and a little more fun. These included the various phases of the arts-music, home- making, and art. Each course was divided into 'l' many specific areas. Home economics was split into such components as cooking, sewing and baby-care. The curriculum applied not only to the girls, but also to the boys in the Chefs class, who also received the Red Cross Baby Care Course. Since the Ohio Legislation has required this course for young drivers interested in receiving their licenses, many more students are taking this course. The study of English included correct language usage, the development of our language and even the history of many countries, which in some way, affected our language. It gave the students qf Clay a poised attitude when speaking with others, and it improved their reading, writing, and speaking skills. This year Clay had moved ahead of many schools by advancing the curriculum of its STS classes. Sophomores who were eligible for these classes received a combination of junior and sophomore Englishg the juniors studied senior linglishg the seniors expanded into new fields by a general review of what they learned previously, by then putting this knowledge to use in a prac- tical way, such as composition, poetry, and by preparing a research paper on their own original topic. puff- Mr. Paul Gretzingcr, English, stops to discuss the new literary magazine with a student in 6th period study hall. 0 .1, ffifr H Mrs. Elcnor Mock, American History, stops in the office to sign in. History Proves To Be Uther Than A Snap Course lt was once said that history was made to show the mistakes that man had once made so that he would not repeat them in the future. By studying the social sciences, we've learned more about our- selves and learned to take the responsibilities which accompany being an adult and a citizen of the United States. Through the courses that all students must take, a basic knowledge of our country's history is taught, plus an extensive understanding of the United States governmental operations and economics. For students inter- ested in more ancient studies, World history pro- vided an interesting study of the past. Sociology gave the students an understanding of human re- lations, such as between the community and the individual. Another facet of the social science department is geography. This course, which was new to Clay last year, allowed the students to learn the history of the earth by studying the earth's surface, land and Water, mountains, and rivers. A ,s 3 fi It li! For the boys, industrial arts, and auto mechanics have long been a favorite. These courses let the imaginations bloom into a new car engine, a wooden table of intricate design. The boys could do these only after learning the necessary skills. The physical education program gave all jun- iors and seniors a chance to enjoy themselves and to take a break from a day of studying. They found that although they were the newest class at Clay, they were expected to widen their in- terests through active membership in clubs. As scholastic and athletic competition became tougher, they learned that the words Eagle Pride meant more than winning a game. It was pride in the guys on the teams, in the members of the clubs and in the individuals of the various classes who were trying their best. Wells. Not pictured is vice- prcsidcnt Roy Gahler. 's I t Il ll Brimming with enthusiasm for the coming year, the Junior Class returned to Clay in Sep- tember. Although they were not yet as high as the Seniors, they were given more responsibility in school affairs. It was their duty to help in planning the Junior-Senior Prom and in main- taining a high degree of sportsmanship. All class officers assisted in these activities. The Juniors also planned the early morning breakfasts, select- ed the four rings from which their class ring was chosen, and culled a film for the traditional Junior Class movie. The guys participated in varsity sports where they helped bring several honors to Clay. The girls were permitted to try out for varsity cheer- leaders. In fulfilling these positions, they achieved an elation and a knowledge that came only from doing their best. V ' -1 ,--: 1 Debbie Achter ' . They created, wondered, roamed, dreamed. They were alternately noisy, serious, and spirited. They were respected, scorned, jeered, and praised. They produced their share of sports heroes and academic leaders. In their possession was one league championship and two second place titles in football acquired during their three years at Clay. Six were finalists in the National Merit Scholarship test. They produced a Toledo Area Student Council president and queen. For the first time in twelve years an exchange student, Guillermo Fonnegro, was a member of the Student Body lor three and one half months. Many received the greatest honors Clay has to bestow- membership in the National Honor Society. As they faced their last step in high school, they accepted ob- stacles, enjoyed life, and learned how to live for each day.
