Introduction... The art staff selected the theme to be carried through our annual, and this year it is our pleasure to bring to you, as best we can, the story of water. As narrator we have selected one of whom you have heard much, but of whom you know little-Melicertes. So first we find it our duty to introduce you to the host-Melicertes. Rise, rise, and heave thy rosy head From the coral paven bed. And bridle in thy headlong wave, Till thou our summons answered have. Listen and save. -Milton. I, Melicertes, COIIIC. I come from the deepest depths of the sea, from every foun- tain, brook, and pool, to tell you the story of water. Not in the medium of the word or voice, which is so temporary, but in a fashion that every age since the beginning of time will understand, by Word of picture-which has lived since time immemorial. Turn and Behold! . . . and when the universe was divided, Neptune received the oceans, the lakes, the rivers-all the waters everywhere, and he was one of tl1e rnightiest of gods. All the fishes, the sea lions, the serpents, even the lowly snails, all the sea creatures dwelt in Neptune's kingdom, and the sailors, and the fishermen, came to respect King Neptune. Now there dwelt in the court of the king a certain Melicertes, he of whom you have heard, who had jurisdiction of the ports and shores. Melicertes loved every living creature-he helped the gulls, the dolphins, the shipwrecked-it was he who directed commerce upon the oceans. . . . So we think none is more fitted to relate the progress of water than Melicertes who has watched water advance from the time when it was used only to form clouds and the separation of continents, to the present day, when thousands of tons of shipping cross vast oceans of water every day, and each day among the shipbuilders, the sailors, the fishers, and all those who lived by the medium of water, there are countless numbers of human interest stories . . . deeds of Life, and Death, and numerous heroisms affected by the waters. Advance from the time-vvorn pages of history, Melicertes, you who witnessed the Hrst native canoes, you who directed countless explorers and their journeys, who guided Hercules across the sea in a golden cup, saw Eskimos who battled for life in a tiny Kayak, and who saw aviators plunge to an icy death. Advance, and tell your story in picture. 4
