Harry McDonald. The Clay City baseball team started the 1967-68 season with six returning lettermen. When the opening game arrived, only two of the lettermen were in familiar positions as the rest had been pressed into new positions. To help these “experienced” players were three juniors and two sophomores. The season started slow as the boys became accustomed to their new roles. The team lost the traditional opening doubleheader with Kinmundy and Farina-La-Grove. In the first annual Clay City Invitational Tourney, Clay City beat Mills Prairie but then lost to Stewardson-Strasburg, who went on to win the tourney. As MTC divisional play began, the boys came into their own as they became confident they could handle the new positions assigned them. With improved and dependable hitting and pitching, winning ways returned. Pitcher Greg Kuenstler provided steadiness in his fourth year as a varsity hurler, and Ed Wyatt proved he could handle relief pitching as well as swing a heavy bat. Bill Long blossomed into a fine young pitcher who will be the mainstay for next year’s team. Jeff Ditter, after a year’s batting slump, returned to his regular hitting form. Ex-catcher, now first baseman, Steve Shaffer showed he could handle a bat as well as a glove and provided a needed punch in the lineup. Mike Patridge, riding on a hot bat, moved into a starting outfield position. Steve Abbott using speed and the ability to get on base, played centerfield like a hawk. Ron Patridge and Dan Wilder alternated in the outfield, as did Carl Wattles and Bruce Staer at second base. John Taylor handled the catching duties as Jeff Ditter moved to third base in place of Ed Wyatt who moved to shortstop. As the team became a unit, they won six straight games and the divisional title for the ninth straight year. After qualifying for the conference championship game, the Wolves traveled to Dieterich for a night game. In a finely played and well pitched game by Bill Long, the Wolves were edged 2-1. In the MTC championship game, the team played its finest game of the season as they outhit, outpitched, outplayed, but unfortunately could not outscore, the Farina-LaGrove team and lost 3-1 to finish second in the MTC for the third straight year.
