Harry McDonald. The Clay City baseball team started the 1967-68 season with six returning lettermen. When the opening game arrived, only two of the lettermen were in familiar positions as the rest had been pressed into new positions. To help these “experienced” players were three juniors and two sophomores. The season started slow as the boys became accustomed to their new roles. The team lost the traditional opening doubleheader with Kinmundy and Farina-La-Grove. In the first annual Clay City Invitational Tourney, Clay City beat Mills Prairie but then lost to Stewardson-Strasburg, who went on to win the tourney. As MTC divisional play began, the boys came into their own as they became confident they could handle the new positions assigned them. With improved and dependable hitting and pitching, winning ways returned. Pitcher Greg Kuenstler provided steadiness in his fourth year as a varsity hurler, and Ed Wyatt proved he could handle relief pitching as well as swing a heavy bat. Bill Long blossomed into a fine young pitcher who will be the mainstay for next year’s team. Jeff Ditter, after a year’s batting slump, returned to his regular hitting form. Ex-catcher, now first baseman, Steve Shaffer showed he could handle a bat as well as a glove and provided a needed punch in the lineup. Mike Patridge, riding on a hot bat, moved into a starting outfield position. Steve Abbott using speed and the ability to get on base, played centerfield like a hawk. Ron Patridge and Dan Wilder alternated in the outfield, as did Carl Wattles and Bruce Staer at second base. John Taylor handled the catching duties as Jeff Ditter moved to third base in place of Ed Wyatt who moved to shortstop. As the team became a unit, they won six straight games and the divisional title for the ninth straight year. After qualifying for the conference championship game, the Wolves traveled to Dieterich for a night game. In a finely played and well pitched game by Bill Long, the Wolves were edged 2-1. In the MTC championship game, the team played its finest game of the season as they outhit, outpitched, outplayed, but unfortunately could not outscore, the Farina-LaGrove team and lost 3-1 to finish second in the MTC for the third straight year. The 1967 X-Country season was successful; and, as I view it, filled with effort, ability, determination, highlights and talent. Four of the above mentioned terms are easily qualified if you ever observed the ’67 Harriers in action. The highlights of the season can be observed by checking the fine record of ’67 runners. Another was our Clay City Open meet. It was a meet with good stiff competition. One of the greatest highlights of the season came near the end when Don Cas finished 4th in the district meet at West Frankfort among strong competitors and by this accomplishment earned the privilege to run in the state meet at Urbana. For myself another highlight was the ever present effort and excellent attitude which prevailed in our team. Our lettermen this year were: Seniors—Ron Patridge, John Cox, Owen Skaggs, and Don Cash; Juniors—Mike Gr: and Dennis Carder; Sophomores—Doug Hosselton and David Burt. Four of our lettermen were underclassmen this year, and other underclassmen looked good. Judging from this fact, we should remain strong in the near future. I most assuredly want to publicly thank Mr. McDaniel who worked with me in Cross Country, and thanks to Mr Tolliver who helped us in many ways. 30 Lettermen FIRST ROW—Dennis Carder, Mgr. Harry McDonald, Mike Gray, Owen Skaggs; SECOND ROW—Coach Curtis, Ron Patridge, John Cox, David Burt, Doug Hosselton, Don Cash, Assistant Coach Jim McDaniel. In capping the highlights of the basketball season, the best way to remember this team was that they came to the game ready to play. The team’s success this year could be attributed to three factors. The first was the boys’ willingness to work together as a team. The second factor was their zone press defense, and the third factor was their hustle. With fourteen of the twenty-four games decided by a margin of eight points or less, the Wolves provided much excitement and entertainment for the fans. Our season started poorly with us losing three out of our first four ball games. At the Christmas break we were still struggling with a 4-5 won los record. However, in the month of January we began to jell; and we won seven games in a row, climaxed by our winning the MTC CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT. In winning the tournament, we squeeked by Louisville by three points, Noble by four, then playing a perfect game, routed Farina 80-58. We finished the season winning three and losing five to close out our season with a recrod of fourteen wins and ten losses which enabled us to have a seventh straight winning season. His best time was 14 seconds. 43 1968 TRACK SEASON To add to the long list of successful CCCHS track seasons, ’68 was another very good year. The Wolves’ dual and triangular meets record was 8-0 to tie the two previous seasons. In seven big meets this year we were also quite successful. Our boys captured four first place trophies, two Frosh-Soph and two varsity, one each in the Clay City Open and again repeated victories at both levels of the Midland Trail Conference. We had a squad of 24 boys, rather evenly distributed in the four class levels, 17 of whom met requirements to letter. This was the Wolves’ eighth consecutive undefeated season in the MTC, placing the record against other MTC schools at 60-0 from 1961-68. Although we have five seniors leaving the team, I look forward to a strong team and another successful season next year with the talent which shall remain. The seniors on the ’68 squad were: Ed Wyatt who gave a good performance in running Relays and in Pole Vaulting where he usually placed and picked up many points for the team. Ed achieved very well in the High Jump this year as is indicated by his many first places and the fact that he set a new school record in the event at 5’1154”. Owen Skaggs as a runner helped us in many meets. At one time or another he ran in every individual race except the 220. Owen worked hard and gave the teanf a good year by devoting himself to track. Dave Ryker achieved our highest total in points this season with 178, setting a new record. Dave was a consistent winner in three events - Long Jump, 100 yd. Dash, and 440 yd. Dash. He also accomplished a new high in total career points, setting the mark at 435 2. Bill Harrison was a High Jumper for us and consistently picked up points in that event. He also threw the Discus, but worked primarily on High Jump. Ron Patridge completes the list of seniors, and does so very well. Ron was our leading Half Miler and ran the High Hurdles to pick up many points. He ran on the Mile Relay team most of the season and turned in good performances there. Ron helped the team beyond point totals with his willingness to work and his effort displayed each time out. Other records achieved this season were: New total points mark in the Varsity Clay City Open by Clay City — 77 points Keith Pryor (a sophomore) set a new school Pole Vault record at ll’3‘ 2”. We wish to take this opportunity to thank our sponsor, Mrs. Long, for the excellent supervision she gave us during the past year. Also, we would like to express our gratitude to our advertisers, our photographer, the faculty, and students. It would have been impossible to edit this annual without the help of these people. Now as you go your separate ways, not knowing if happiness or sorrow will cross your path, hold the thoughts of your days spent at Clay City High School as the happiest days of your life.
