T. LIBERANNI1985 ALMA MATER We’re the school That’s just below The Mason Dixon line With our colors Gray and blue. As in our sports We shine Swell the chorus. Let it echo Over hill and dale. Hail to thee. Our Alma Mater Hail to Clay-Battelle CLAY-BATTELLE HIGH SCHOOL Blacksville, West Virginia 26521 1 Fitting It All Together On September 2, 1984, Jill Little walked into big Clay-Battelle High School. She was puzzled by all the classrooms and the hundreds of pushing, shoving students in the halls. With a schedule in one hand and a notebook in the other, she started to search for her homeroom. She wandered from one room to another almost in a state of panic until she finally found it. After that she stuck with the rest of the seventh graders like glue for the rest of the day. Jill found it difficult to fit all the elements of this new environment together at first. Little things like unlocking her locker were frustrating as well as having seven different teachers instead of one each day. Then on a larger scale the incessant excitement of athletic competition dazzled her while the glitter of the many theme dances enchanted her. By the end of the 1984-85 school year, the pieces had finally come together. It was a slow process which involved a great deal of hard work, but Jill completed the school puzzle with success. As the year ended Jill recalled some of the highlights of her first year as a Cee-Bee. First she remembered the very successful 1984 football team that went to the state playoffs, the busloads of students walking across the bridge, the excessive snow days, 3000 fans on the football field, and Mr. Van Meter dressed as the only woman teacher with a mustache. Now you can discover your place in the 1985 school year by examining the puzzle pieces placed here in the Liberanni. 2 Bobby Rush, Dave Tennant, John Leagan, Craig Parrish, and Bill Barr, won air-band competition with “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” Chris Stitchick and Traci Lemley says “Zippy Shearer, eat your heart out.” I Hu 1 Kevin L. Jones, Beth Husk, Patty Kennedy, and Debbie Simmons discover a new way to squeeze the “Charman.” Clint Clovis wonders if his seams are straight. 3 Title Page Theme Page Contents Page Seniors...... Their activities include more than forty-five events. This large number of events is necessary in order for the chapter to meet the individual needs of its members. A typical year will include the following activities. In May the officers are chosen. July 9-14 was spent at the state leadership camp and convention where Kevin L. Jones, Dan Howard and Barry Martino received their State Farmer Degrees and Rusty Beach and Mike Howard were official delegates. The opening of school was extremely busy with state vo-ag judging contests. The contestants were. Butch Varner, Kevin L. Jones, Kevin D. Jones, Karen Jones, Dan Howard, Sharon Wright, Lynne Mercer, Francis McCoy, Charlie Long and Rusty Beach. On September 15, 1984, the Annual FFA and 4-H Livestock Shows and Sale was held at the Battelle district fair grounds. Fifteen Clay-Battelle members participated making $21,000. In November they held a gun raffle and fruit sale. Craig Parrish and Rusty Beach participated in the tobacco show and sale at Hunnington on December 9, 1984, and all FFA members summarized their record book. Those whose record summaries were the best, filled out proficiency award application for the State Farmer Degree. Work began on parliamentary procedure for the officers. Karen Jones entered the prepared public speaking contest and Butch Varner entered the extemporaneous speaking contest. Soon after this preparation for the banquet began with the officers doing the presenting and speaking. To encourage members to develop their talent, a talent show was organized which included the entire student body. Trophies and money awards were awarded. They ended the year with their land judging contest. Butch Varner, Kevin L. Jones, Kevin D. Jones, Dan Howard, Karen Jones, Barry Martino, Robert Core, Craig Parrish, Rusty Beach and Mike Howard.
