LIBERANNI1982 Alma Mater We're the school That's just below The Mason Dixon line. W ith our colors Gray and blue. As in our sports We shine. Swell the chorus. Let it echo Over hill and dale. Hail to thee. Our Alma Mater, Hail to Clay-Battelle. Clay-Battelle High School Blacksville, West Virginia 1 The Liberanni presents to you, the students of Clay-Battelle High School, a carefully considered glance at the year 1982. We used the metaphor of a blank canvas waiting for the painter’s brush to represent the new school year waiting for students’ achievements. As each event occurs, we put another stroke of paint on the canvas. We must always remember that through the quality of our work and involvements, each of us makes his painting of the year 1982 either a masterpiece or a fiasco. We all want to remember 1982 as a year filled with happiness, and as a time when at least a few of our dreams came true. We hope this book captures a small portion of the color of the year 1982, and that it will help you to paint in your year 1982 again and again. 2 3. 1) The Liberanni staff had a lot of crazy days and this particular day they were learning photography techniques. 2) Cindy Tennant, Mr. Pierce, and Sherry Fetty dressed as Santa and his elves to visit Daybrook Elementary. 3) Kenny Fetty won first place on the junior high level at the MAC Halloween Exhibit. 3 Contents Title Page Theme Page Contents Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Eighth Grade Seventh Grade Special Classes Fine Arts Awards Athletics Organizations Activities Staff Advertising 1 2 4 5 30 36 42 48 54 60 65 77 82 108 125 146 154 Index 174 Seniors Motto: The past was theirs to keep, the future is ours to hold. Twelve boys put forth an effort that will long be remembered. From the opening practice on August 1st until the final decision to cancel the season on August 26th, those twelve boys hit the fields by day and the phones by night. They called classmates on the phone and made personal visits to encourage participation. They would not give up. Coach David Dubbe had meeting after meeting with Monongalia County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jack Dulaney. Playing with only twelve boys was a safety hazard and the health of the boys could not be endangered. The decision was reached that if Clay-Battelle could get the number of players up to twenty-two. the season would continue as planned. The publicity of our situation was enormous. We made headlines in the Dominion Post for three days. Mr. Thomas was hounded to death by WCLG and WVAQ radio stations for information that would give them a “scoop ' story. The publicity resulted in capturing the attention of nine more guys and the next day brought twenty-one boys to the football field for practice. All hope was restored and the on again, off again football season was on!!! The fans were ecstatic and the cheerleaders prepared to lead them on. But the next morning only the original twelve boys reported to the field for practice so the final decision was made. There would be no football season at CBHS. For the five senior members, center Mark Stiles: split end Jim chance to prove themselves 1 lod meant graduating without a gridiron for one more season. For juniors Dan Estel. Bill) King. Jeff Watson, and sophomore Butch Hall and freshman Jim Stewart it me experience this ) car's season cuuld hu c gained l'ur them The reason we will remember the 1981 football season lies not on the field and not on the stat sheet. The reason lies in the heart. Things r it ■pw the fmmm [ish. o. having to do with the heart are not soon forgotten. So even though we did not have a football team this year, we hope that in the years to come that people w ill remember the efforts made to save it as well as all the other important events that occurred during the 1981-82 school year.
