It was established to extend educational offerings to known disadvantaged students. Eligible students may be considered disadvantaged in terms of attitude, attendance, progress in and or financial necessity. Students must have their own transportation to qualify for the program. In addition to employment, the students must attend their regular required classes and a weekly class taught by Mr. Darling here at CBHS. Underlying the program are the initial goals or objectives that students will obtain and develop a realistic school record and working life relationship, improved attitudes toward personal and social adjustment, responsibility and self-discipline, tran-sitorial attitudes toward school and work, entry of occupational skills and knowledge of job placement and follow-up resources. These can only be achieved by suggested and cooperative efforts of the business community and the feeder schools, as there is an increased utilization of community resources for educational purposes. ’' 69 “The buck stops here.” Principal JACOB D. The week's activities were successful as the Cee-Bees rolled over Edgewood by a score of 12-0. Adrian Kross provided the music for the semi-formal dance that followed in the old gym, which was our first dance of the school year. Kelli Yost, our 1976 Homecoming Queen, reigned over the night's festivities after she was crowned during half-time ceremonies by our new Student Council Advisor and Vice-Principal Mr. Dennis Thomas. Kelli was escorted by Mark Shriver. Her attendants were Jo Ann Holmes and Debbie Golden, escorted by Rod Moore and Steve Smith respectively. 87 M. Campbell and S. Roberts K. Yost and M. Shriver D. The lucky girl had been elected by the senior high student body and was chosen for her friendly nature, and school spirit. The results of the ballot were kept secret until that magic moment during halftime when Kelli Yost was named Homecoming Queen for 1976. The game itself was exciting with the C-Bs winning by only one touchdown over the Vikings. The game ended at 12-6 with the two C-B touchdowns being made by Ryan Wilson and Lynn Stewart. 89 Fun and Games Prevail at the Junior Carnival The annual Junior Carnival sponsored by the Class of 1978 was held November 13, 1976. The highlight of the evening was the talent show and coronation held in the new gym at 9:00. A gymnastic routine by Jennifer Foreman, a skit by the cheer-leading midgets???, and that unforgettable belt act were some of the talents performed in the show. The coronation of Junior Carnival Queen Tammy Tennant added the final touch to the evening. Tammy, escorted by Richie McCarty, represented the junior class and was chosen by the penny-a-vote system. Her attendants were Kim Chisler, escorted by Nathan Haught, and Donna A. Simpson, escorted by Dexter Walls. HU Candidate Crowned Queen of Jingle Bell Ball Our annual Christmas dance, the Jingle Bell Ball, was held December 17, 1976. Each class and club was represented during the coronation. Senior High Hearts Unlimited representative Beverly McDowell was crowned queen. It was thought that the Sweethearts Ball would be a victim of these circumstances, but it was held in spite of everything. FFA and FHA, joint sponsors of the event, decided the dance would be semi-formal rather than formal as it has been in the past. The first girl to reign at a revised Sweethearts Dance was Joleen Strosni-der, one of 7 senior FHA members vying for the title. Joleen, escorted by FFA member Tom Price, was accompanied by two attendants, Shelley Chisler escorted by Donald Forquer, and Beth Haught escorted by Sam Stat-ler. 93 Hotel Morgan Hosts 1977 Prom The 1977 Junior-Senior prom for the Clay-Battelle students was hosted by the Hotel Morgan in Morgantown. There were some outstanding individual accomplishments even though the team notched only two victories. Their attitude was on the upswing with a respectable performance against state champion Mannington, and a thrilling come from behind tie with Masontown in the snow finale. However, the team snapped back with a seven game winning streak which included a thrilling victory of 51-50 over University High. As the season went on, the team grew smaller as it encountered several difficulties. Caroline Toothman was put out of action by a broken foot. The Cee-Bees also lost Renae Myers and Kathy Moore. The team had dwindled down to six by the end of the season. Even faced with a shortage of players the girls kept fighting. The team enjoyed victory in their first tournament game against Cameron but suffered defeat in their second game against Pine Grove Valley. Two of the Cee Bee girls had the honor of being included in the All State Team. Kay Jones was named to the second team and Renae Myers received honorable mention. They were winners because of their intensity both in practice and on the floor in games. Two of their team members made All Tournament Team, they were Perry Huggins and Kenny Neer. They also had two All Conference in Alan Huggins and Perry Huggins. 117 Varsity Cheerleaders Build Good Squad Allhough bruises and pulled muscles are usually related to football players, this year the team was not alone. The Varsity cheerleaders were so determined to be SEEN and HEARD, they tried to create a new, peppier style of cheering that would be as exciting as the games themselves. The squad practiced three times a week during the summer, went to cheerleading camp, worked during seventh period each day, and stayed after school many nights to make spirit posters, plan pep rallies, and polish their cheers. By the beginning of basketball season, the girls had mastered such stunts as high mounts, knee drops, and back roll-offs. One of their most popular cheers included a tension drop when they stood on each others' shoulders and fell forward as if they were going to fall on their faces before jumping off and doing a forward roll. The girls, under the fine direction of Ms. Karen Kibble, put together a fine squad that will long be remembered at CBHS. 1976-77 CLAY-BATTELLE VARSITY CHEERLEADERS: Tammy Tennant Holmes - Head. Although compiling only a one six won loss record, the team lost four games by two runs or less. This team showed tremendous progress from last year and will be even stronger next year with twelve lettermen returning. The installation of a feeder program consisting of little league and pony league summer programs in the community will begin to show in the next few years in the high school level. Steve Stiles was a very enthusiastic and consistent senior left fielder. Mark Skinner was named All-County pitcher and infielder and was the leading percentage hitter for the C-B’s. Dick Hockenberry was also named All-County utility infielder and was the leading RBI hitter for the C-B’s. 125 1977 Track Schedule DATE OPPONENTS CB SCORE CB PLACE ENTRIES April 6 Buckhannon-Upshur 34 6th 10 April 12 U.H.S. 69 lst 2 April 14 Magnolia, Rivesville. Simpson Pride and Determination Spark CB Band Pride and determination is a growing tradition in the Clay-Battelle Band and this year has been an even greater challenge . Under the new direction of Mr. Allen Link, the band began last summer practicing on the average of three days a week. An hour of practice during band class and individual attention have also proved beneficial to the band at the many functions where they have performed. In addition to supporting the C-B football and basketball teams, the band represented CBHS at the Wadestown, Westover, and Daybrook Fair Parades and WVU Band Day as well as having Christmas and Spring Concerts at the school. As a huge fund-raiser, the band collected recipes and produced a community cookbook. BAND EXECUTIVE COUNCIL: BOTTOM ROW: Jerry Myers, Janet Liming, Penny Barto, Kathy Marshall. Ruth Roush. The worked in a wide variety of media which was evident when they finally participated in the Monongalia County High School Art Exhibit at the Mountain Lair in Morgantown in March of 1977. Seven ribbons for outstanding artwork were awarded to CB students. Lynda Shriver received two ribbons for two different paintings. Glenn Johnson, Melinda Long, Joleen Strosnider, Glenda Yost and Wesley Price each received one ribbon apiece for their work. Later the art students exhibited their work. Later the art students produced their own art exhibit for the students and parents of the Clay-Battelle area. Some of the highlights of the show were the large paper mache sculptures of a stegosaurus, King Kong and a giant egg beater. The final project of the year was the handbuilt pottery unit. It was started with a demonstration by Mrs. Doris Kelly of Morgantown and was ended by students firing their pottery in a primitive firing pit outside the building. 137 Future Homemakers of America 1st Sponsor Mrs. Wilson. This year Future Homemakers of America sold ice cream as their money making project. They made enough money to pay for the Mother-Daughter Banquet meals. The Mother-Daughter Banquet was held on May 6. The Mother-Daughter Banquet is a meal for the students in Future Homemakers of America and their mother and other guests to show what they did for the year. Marcia Moore and Jeannie Owens spent a weekend with Mrs. Wilson and Ms. Easton at Cedar Lakes, Ripley, West Virginia, as our Future Homemakers of America voting delegates for State Officers. The annual Jingle Bell Ball, the social event sponsored by NHS, changed the dress for the dance from formal to semi-formal. The traditional banquet was held, again this year, at the Fairmont Holiday Inn. The new officers were installed, and each received a gift from the Honor Society. The climax of the year came when Mrs. Bunner presented each senior member of SHNHS a small trophy for their dedication to the Honor Society. lsi ROW: Debbie Simpson, Lyneite Yost, Ruth Roush (V.P.). 2nd ROW: Debbie Ganrett (Hist.), Kelli Yost (Rep.). 3rd ROW: Vicki Snyder, Caroline Toothman, Janet Shaver (Treas.), Roxie Wagner, Mrs. Bunner. 4th ROW: Rick Tuttle, Ryan Wilson. Wade Bowser was determined to win for his team. Sadie Hawkins Day Sadie Hawkins' Day is presented by the Junior and Senior Varsity Chorus. Sadie Hawkins' Day is a day when the sex rolls are changed; the girls ask the boys out, pay for the tickets, and ask the boys to marry them. In the afternoon, everyone meets on the front lawn and they play games such as; balloon toss, three legged race, and tug of war. Each student plays for his own grade. At the end of the day, they have a bachelor’s race where all the boys run and the girls catch the one they wish to marry. Then after all the activities are over they have a dance in which they announce the winner of the activities, which was the 8th grade this year. The winner is determined by which grade plays the most games. They also announced the winner of Li' Abner and Daisy Mae. Mary Ann Estel and Perry Huggins were the winners and they were from the 8th grade. The Junior and Senior Varsity Chorus sponsor this as their money-making project. Marcia. The staff member must have worked at least two full years on the staff, must be a senior and worked diligently to publish the yearbook. The 1977 Personna Liberanni was Miss Kelli Yost. 158 Honor Boy and Honor Girl The Honor Boy and Honor Girl competition, a scholarship program sponsored by the Mountaineer Mall and Hills Department Store, included a senior boy and girl from each high school in Monongalia, Preston, and Taylor counties. At CBHS, the selection of Honor Boy and Girl is determined by the highest scores on the college entrance examination. After being chosen as Clay-Battelle’s candidates, Beth Haught and Schroeder Roberts attended an interview and a banquet at the Lakewiew Inn. At the banquet Beth was named 1977 Honor Girl and received a $500 scholarship, the first to be awarded to a Clay-Battelle Honor Girl candidate. 159 Lynnette Yost and Ryan Wilson were chosen by the faculty to attend Boys’ and Girls' State. Although they are held during different weeks, Boys' and Girls' State are located at Jackson’s Mills in Weston, W.Va. Sponsored by the American Legion, these annual camps give high school seniors a chance to learn how our government works by letting them set up a mock government, campaign for office, and learn the duties of offices to which they are elected. Beth Haught was named Clay-Battelle’s 1977 Family Leader of Tomorrow. Beth won the honor by competing with other seniors in a written knowledge exam at school. She received a certificate from General Mills, sponsor of the annual educational scholarship program, and placed in the 93rd percentile rank in the state. Next she, along with the other candidates, attended a swimming party held at the Waynesburg Swimming Pool. The highlight of Ruth's candidacy was a Coal Show at Charmichaels in which each candidate displayed their talent and modeled an evening dress. The girls were all awarded a bracelet, luggage, and a group picture. Their Alma Mater Roxie Wagner was determined the winner of the 1976-77 United Nations Youth Pilgrimage contest. The Rebecca-Odd Fellows Lodge sponsored the contest. Howard Clark, Debbie Simpson, Veronica Rebold, Lynda Shriver, Joyce Walker, Ronnie Rebold, and Danny Markley also competed.
