RICKETTS As a participant in the ceremony which gave this ship her name and as an interested observer of the Mixed Manning Demonstration since its inception, I am especially pleased to say a few words to you in this cruise book. Although the pictures and text will evoke for you the flavor of your many activities during the demonstration, they can- not convey the importance of what you have accomplished. From varied nationalities, naval traditions, cultures and backgrounds, you have proved conclusively that operational efficiency need not be sacrificed in the multi-national manning of a modern, complex warship. In becoming a highly effective team, you have exemplified the characteristics of resourcefulness, professional competence, determination and tact which are common to all the navies you represent. It would be difficult to predict the far-reaching decisions which may eventually result from your efforts. I believe, however, that the principle of international teamwork in a compact, highly specialized environment which you have con- vincingly illustrated will be of continuing significance in the defense of the Free World. In addition to the satisfaction of an important job well done, you will take with you when you leave this ship a broader understanding of nations and cultures different from your own.
