ARLAN R COOLIDGE It is appropriate as well as gratifying to have Music chosen as the unifying factor in the 1959 CADUCEUS. Classical High with its enviable tradition of high scholar- ship may recall the central place of Music in the European universities of the Middle Ages, a time which saw the Quadrivium- Arithmetic, Music, Geometry, and Astron- omy-the core of the mathematical arts. In fact Music was then rightfully regarded as a science and an art if considered in all of its aspects. As a science of sound to be probed in the Physics laboratory, as a vehicle of intense and powerful expression in the hands of the trained com- poser, and as a companion for all who listen, sing or pro- duce instrumental sound, it transcends today the barriers of language and geography. Is it being overfanciful to imagine in the years ahead a world society in which Music from all nations will be available to us at the twist of the dial, or even a true music of the spheres drawn from yet unknown cosmic sources? After World War I, Poland, as a reconstituted state crowded by ambitious neighbors, named as its head of government the great pianist and humanitarian, jan Pad- erewski. His character, prestige, and experience as an un- ofhcial ambassador over the years, made him a command- ing figure at a critical juncture in Western history. In our confused and frightened world, also, the minds and spirits of great artists and musicians may have important and practical ideas to contribute to society, and in the long run it will be idea and not physical force that decides the destiny of Man. In dedicating this issue to Music with all that it holds of unity balance and beauty the CADUCEUS max be prophetic of a change in vsorld thought pointing to an era of sensitixcness coopcration and world peace ARLAN R COOLIDGE Professor of Music Brown University The campus of Brown University t , A , t t , K V - V Q t , 4 , . 4 X . - w 4:44.
