They are the pinions which speed the free exchange of thoughts throughout the world. Winged words! They spread the truth, not despot-twisted, nor slowed by ocean,s void or mountain's crest. Winged words! They implement the divine writing, . . . the truth shall make ye free. Engaged now in a struggle for freedom as titanic as any that has gone before, this nation today fights tyranny with the two-edged sword of truth, and the sinews of her arms are words-winged words! America now is reaching down into the darkness for the hands of her sister nations of the world. She will reach them and draw them into the glorious light of freedom. To do this, she must sell, is selling, herself, from the beginning-in that divine- ly-inspired consecration to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness-until today- at the pinnacle of human dignity flourishing as nowhere else. Yes, America is selling herself. And as she sells herself to the family of nations, so does the individual in this nation sell himself or herself-whether it be thequalifi- cations for a job, or the shiny automotive dreams that come true daily on the pro- duction line. Thus one comes to the theme of the 1952 Orbit. Herein, borrowed from the world of advertising, lie the same words, though differently arranged, which Amer- ica is using in her sale of freedom to the world. ,As these words tell Americans the truth about the bounteous outpouring of the - thin which make life full and rich and good, it is the hope that they will tell to Eu t D truth about America's educational system as typified by Classen High -N c l. . ,tits 355243535 isaffelrfigisesk eager aizzkz 4 ' . Oklahoma City's 81 schools look to the strong leadership of Dr. Chester Swanson, superintendent of schools. Dr. Swanson has successfully supervised the school system for the last two years. His experience in the field of education includes outstanding work in the Panama Canal school administra- tion. Dr. Swanson came to Oklahoma City from San Diego, California. For the first time in 15 years, the Oklahoma City Board of Education has a woman member, Mrs. L. D. Melton, mother of two children, and an active member of the Parent-Teacher association. Another prominent new member is Mr. jim Lookabaugh, former Oklahoma ASLM college football coach. The board, which sets policy for city schools, has Mr. John C. Pearson, Jr., ward two, as president. Mr. R. Lewis Barton and Mr. C. B. McCray were re-elected. BO RD OP EDUC TIO MJ. .U ..5,,.. ..... J., .... ADMINISTR TIO When Classen students participate in events both here and in other cities and states, they are never without the encourage- ment and guidance of W. H. Taylor, principal. Who can remember a time when Mr. Taylor, during his nine years here, has ever missed a play, a football game or individual recitals? Classen can boast no more able administrator, nor can its students have a more loyal friend, than Mr. Taylor. MR. W. H. TAYLOR Principal MR. LLOYD ESTES Vice Principal iv MRS. DELMA MISS ETHELYN MCNUTT OFFICE FORCE A sense ot humor tempered with Iirm fairness is the successful recipe which has brought students with problems to the door of Lloyd Estes, vice principal. Working closely with Mr. Estes is Mrs. Clara Alley, registrar, Mrs. Laura Matthews, sec- retary to the principal, Mrs. Delma Harris and Miss Ethelyn McNutt, who keep track of student attendance. .9- CLINIC Nosebleeds and skinned knees, cut fingers and head- aches, it's all in Il day's work for the clinic staff. Student aids not only learn the fund- amentals of first aid, but they also render a service to their friends. The clinic is equipped with three beds and a medi- cine cabinet full of non-pre- scription medicines, plus safety pins, needles and thread. LIBRARY It takes a competent librarian and several student helpers to keep the book traffic flowing smoothly. Students like the feeling of responsibility that goes with caring for the school's many valuable books, and they also receive their first lessons in library science. Educating students in national political procedure was the goal of the city wide mock conventions. Reaction to presidential nominees was tested at these conventions. Students participated in every activity of an election year. A state delegation was elected, and national committeemen and women were chosen to plan the national conventions held in the Municipal audi- torium in May. IN MEMORY It is only fitting that we pause in the midst of this tribute to 1952 students and mention former students whose stories would not otherwise be contained in these pages. Haskell Graves has been selected to typify the hundreds of Classen boys who have given their lives for their country on the battlefield or on the training field. Haskell represents numerous boys who have attended Classen, fellows who are remembered for athletic prowess, high scholastic standing or participation in school activities. Haskell and the hundreds of other boys who attended Classen have not died in vain. Such a sacrifice for their country long will be remembered. -55- CLASSEN M RUTH BLEYBERC FRED English Award CLASSEN' MARGARET NANCY K. JOHN DYKES English Award Debate, H. Ment. The loyal Comet supporters shared with their football team defeat and victory alike in the 1951 season. Confidence never wavered when such invincible teams as Little Rock and Capitol Hill, Midstate Champ- ions, defeated our Comets and one touchdown gave Lawton the victory over us. Enthusiasm seemed to kindle the fire in the Classen gridders who, coming into their own, plowed through Northeast and Central, which put them in a three-way tie for the City Championship. We then defeated Putnam City but were defeated by Norman and Shawnee. Winriing the final game of the year over Tulsa Will Rogers brought our seas . h ' ' ' ' on to 1 appy climax, making it a truly glorious Thanksgiving day. Classen high school does not think of the underclass- men just as those who will return for another year. The juniors are regarded as potential leaders. These juniors inherit the traditions that the seniors of previous years have perpetuated. They have the combined qualities of leadership, scholarship and service which have made Classen one of the foremost among high schools. Next year the juniors will assume the responsibilities and enjoy the privileges of seniors. We know they can do it-so good luck, juniors. You've a wonderful year ahead of you. Miss Lucille Willoughby, sponsor of the junior class, has contributed time, energy and thought in guiding the junior class, giving encouragement and personal assistance unstintingly. Her influence has been ever present in this year of her sponsorship of the junior class. No, this is not a sophomore English class. this is a history class are words some heard often at Hrst. Famil- iar words later were Pledge, my shoes need shining. These and other memories are in the mental albums of many sophomores. As the days passed, they learned the ways of Clas- sen. They gave their support at all competitive meets and have taken an active part in all of Classen's affairs. This ycar's class officers have done a good job pre- siding over the group's activities. Miss Retha Wave Hulet has been there as guide and counselor. Upperclassmen are confident their achievements will be equaled and perhaps hettered when the sopho- mores of 1951-S2 step up to lill that higher place.
