H. TAYLOR Principal of Classen Tligb School VICE-PRINCIPAL Mr. Lloyd M. Estes, having served as a class- room teacher before becoming vice principal, has a fair and tactful understanding of school problems, from both the teacher's and pupil's point of view. Supervising the Proctor activities, and also the Attendance Department, his dis- ciplenary duties have maintained the best at- tendance record of any of the city schools. Mr. Estes has lived up to his reputation of being fair and friendly to all. PRINCIPAL Mr. Taylor has been the principal and friend of the student body of Classen since 1943. Highly esteemed by both students and faculty as a capable ad- ministrator, with a sincere interest in the growth of the school, he has helped bring Classen to the position it now holds as one of the Southwest's out- standing high schools. Under his di- rection a large new cafeteria, new radio studios and a completely new industrial arts annex have been added to our educational plant this year. Student government has devel- oped under his guidance and has be- come an integral part of the life at Classen. MR. LLOYD M. ESTES 'Vice Principal OFFICE PERSONNEL MRS. DELMA HARRIS Attendance MRS. MADC-E BISWELL Attendance I MRS. LAURA HALEY MATTHEWS MRS- CLARA ALLEY Registrar Secretary and Treasurer As Secretary to the principal, Mrs. Matthews assists in the details of school routine, prepares bulletins and announcements, and receives visitors. Although this is Mrs. Harris' first year at Classen, she has already made a place for herself as a pleasant and accurate attendance clerk. Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Biswell work hand in hand to keep Classen's attendance record one of the best in the city. From them we soon learn that alibis of dental appointments on Friday afternoons don't always excuse ab- sences, and stories about car trouble don't clear tardies. Mrs. Alley, Registrar of Classen, helps us with our various problems concerning enrollment. She is also in charge of our scholastic files and transcripts, and supervises college entrance applications. Miss Eunice Cockrum is of all Classen students. As head of the school library, she is al- ways ready to. help a worried Classenite find a last minute book report, a biography of Virgil, or a treatise on the hous- ing conditions in Yugoslavia. BRUCHER ll-lead Counselor GUIDANCE The guidance department helps us to know ourselves, and promotes better student-faculty relations. To Duane Weinen, who is in charge of group activities, we owe much of the success of our Student Council which is one of the finest and most active in the Southwest. Mr. George Brucher is the chairman of counselors, dean of boys and is in charge of schedules. Miss Retha Wave Hulet is sponsor of the Sopho- more class and dean of girls. Aptitude and other tests are given by Miss Inez Ellis who also handles personal problems and sponsors the correspondence school students. MISS RETHA WAVE HULET Dean of Qirls MR. DLIANE WEINERT Sponsor of Student Council MISS INEZ ELLIS Testing ENGLISH Essential in the drama of life were the courses in English which were the founda- tion for an appreciation of literature, and drama. Also, it was the basis for correct oral and written expressions in our chosen fields. The English department has by far the most important job to perform in teaching the youth of today to make a better world for themselves tomorrow, in further learning to understand not only their own neighbors but their neighbors from foreign lands. Special interests were developed in joumalism, Orbit, Creative writing, English History, Business English and reading courses. Q xx Classen boasts a high ranking on the English placement tests at the Uni- versity of Oklahoma, with eighty- five per cent making above average. MISS HELEN NORRIS MiSS HELEN MRS. Classen speech students have brought home many national trophies and the debate teams have an unequaled record in the nation. MRS. ELAINE TUCKER MRS. MARIE SWANN JOUR ALISM The publications of the journalism department havecon- sistently taken top honors in state and national compe- tition including first class newspaper ratings, and All- American yearbook recognition. The Classen Life, a bi-weekly publication, affords valuable experience to students interested in newspaper work. Both our annual, the Orbit, and The Classen Life are under the supervision of Mrs. Marian Phillips. MRS. LYDA MARSHALL -13 MATHEMATICS In spite of homework in math, known to most of us as a necessary evil, we recognize the value of these courses. A fundamental essential in a drama of life math proves. to be one of the most rewarding classes in highschool. We learn, also that it is used in everyday life out- side the classroom. While some of us take only required math, others take the elective courses and prepare for jobs that require the use of this exacting skill. MR. LEON BRUNER MISS MARY PRUVIT 7-lead of Department MRS. One teutonic language and three romance languages are taught MR' ARTHUR KINCAID here at Classen. They are Latin, French, Spanish, and German. These courses, like curricular English, contain both literature and grammar. The courses offer six semesters of French, four of German, and eight of Latin and Spanish. MISS LELIA PICKARD MISS LLICILLE WILLOUGHBY iss' -1 5- I HISTORY MISS CLARA MEYER Our history teachers play an important role in our daily scope of world problems both of yesterday and today. Under the excellent coaching of Jim Conger, Bill Bynum and Rex Irwin, the Classen squad kept their high standing, never leav- ing second place in the city and district. The team had an out- standing backfield consisting of fullback Buddy Donley, right half Mike Harding, left half Ronnie Spencer and quarterback Tom Murphy. Yet the backfield could not have scored and run so well without the blocking and tackling of the faithful line. During the first of the season the line had great difficulty with injuries, Dick Pulliam, tackle, broke his leg, Maynie Greenberg, center, threw his shoulder out of place, and Otis Bealmer, fullback, had a knee operation, and was out the rest of the season. One of Classen's most dashing Comets, known as Bulldozer Bud Donley made All-State. Donley, Ed Walker, and junior Tom Murphy placed on the first team in All City. Duane jones and Carlos McAfee made the second team. All in all, the Classen team proved its ability and sportsmanship, even though they did not place as high as they hoped for. Classen's 5'10 guard, Bill Knox, was the Comet toast this year, averaging about 15 points a game. Bill was chosen for the All-State, All- District, and All-City teams. h un Classen sophomore forward, was one of the Dan Brown, t e yo g H was averaging around 8 points per greatest assets to this year's team. e game, Bob Colwell, a returning letterman from last year, was maybe a little cold on shooting the first of the season but came through with flying colors a little after the season progressed. He was averaging something like 7 points a game by the end of the season. In conference play the Comets tied for the City title and came in with a three-way tie for third in the Mid-State Conference. Most of the games that the Comets lost in the season were largely decided in the last few minutes of play with only a couple of points difference. The Comet's coach, Mr. Carroll Smelser did a great job this year in turning out such a good unseasoned team. Only one returning letter- man was back from the starting five of the State Champs of '49-'50, and there were only two other returning lettermen from the last year's whole squad. Next year the Comets should come up with a leading contender for the City, District, and State Crown. There will be two retuming on the starting five next year and in all eight boys will be back next year to put the team well in the running. In the finals of the regionals, Central pulled one out of the basket with one second to go. They tied the ball game up and upended Classen in the overtime. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Something important in the lives of all and never to be forgotten . . . the last year of high school with all its activities and great expectations . . . football, basketball, mixers, pep rallies, those frantic campaigns, leadership, and everything else that makes high school complete. The strong ties that have bound the Class of '51 during the past three years have made them a friendly, co-operative, and active force in the school, which makes Classen the loved and respected school that it is. The excellent team-work of this class has made it possible to produce leaders in student government, the Red Cross, debate, radio, journalism, and in many other fields which Classen offers. During the active, busy days of the school year, gradu- ation seemed far away. Seniors poured over those tricky math problems, feverishly memorized English quotations, and sometimes greeted the morning sun, still composing their history themes. Then suddenly, everyone was trying on dignified gray caps and robes and a sensation of excite- ment swept through the upperclassmen. The seniors were proudly walking across the stage to receive their diplomas. The never to-be-forgotten friends, teachers, and fun in this last year will always remain a bright memory. Miss Lucille Willoughby, sponsor of the senior class, has always been a beloved friend and sincere advisor to each and every student of the class, should they need her MBS ,'L,,.,,Y,4E WIIALOUCHBY council. Today as their senior friends are going out into the world, they accept the torch of Classen, and realize that it is their duty to hold it high. Classen High School does not think of the underclassmen just as those who will be back for another year, but they are re- garded as potential leaders and included equally in school privileges and activities. All activities, assemblies, mixers, and tournaments are open to juniors and Sophomores alike. And in being treated as young adults, they hold' a higher regard for the school and their peers. Miss Bernice Cordon, the junior Sponsor, should be ap- plauded by the school for outstanding work with the junior Spmmf BERNICE GORDON class this year. Since she has been at Classen, most of her time has been devoted to either sponsor- ing the junior or Senior class or working on various other activities with enthusiasm. These juniors inherit the traditions that the seniors of previous years have perpetuated. Among them are found all the qualities of leadership, scholarship, and service which have made Classen one of the foremost among high schools, and next year will be their chance to prove all this to us and to themselves. We know they can do it - so good luck, juniors. You've a wonderful year ahead of vou! We believe that this is one of the finest sophomore classes ever to come to Classen because of their sincere interest, they have unlimited possibilities for their next two years. In the first few weeks a sophomore may feel that since he has not been here for such a time he may have been a little shy of the activities that are put on around Classen. But as the year is now coming to a close we are sure that his spirit now truly belongs to Classen. Although he was made to feel as one of the old members at first, he is really graduated in the sense now. Under the guiding hand of Miss Retha Wave I-Iulet, the sophomores solve their problems. Whether it be Silas Marner or the rectangles of geometry, Miss Hulet is ever ready with advice and aid in planning their highschool careers. We look to the class for many accomplishments and when the torch is handed to them, they will rise to the call and carry on with the same spirit and success as those who have gone before them.
