The school year is not sorted and divided into subtitles such as sports, organizations, and activities. A I Instead you remember an assembly, a football game, a mixer. For this reason We have made a rec- ord of these alfairs as they occurred. Inside this cover is the 1949-50 school year as it happened to you. Our greatest disappointment came when Miss Blanche Paul was not able to be with us the entire school year. The seniors envy the juniors and sopho- mores the privilege of being under her direction and influence next year. ' 'Because of her unselfish work in the past and the untiring eliort she will exert in the future we dedicate this 1950 yearbook to Miss Paul. 3 Ng,-,smayhwfmnagm ,..i.........M,..' ..,,... This group of prominent business men have taken time from their own duties to help formulate a school system that ranks high in the nation. They are, left to right: Mr. John Pearson, Jr., Mr. R. Lewis Barton, Mr. Ira Williams and Mr. C. B. McCray. Mr. Vernon Beals, president of the board, is not pictured. s DR. FRED W. HOSLER This is the second year Dr. Hosler has been the superintendent of schools in Oklahoma City. He has the reputation of being one of the iablest educators in-the th t He came to this city from Allentown, Pennsylvania where he had gained sou wes . national prominence. He has the interests of the teachers and schools foremost and has attempted to make our school system one of the finest in the country. mv' MR. WILLIAM H. TAYLOR DR- C' Principal, Classen High School EORGE W-B RU CHER Mr. Taylor, who is serving his seventh year as principal of Classen, has the con- fidence of both the faculty and student body. His never-swerving loyalty to the school and its organizations have given all a sense of security and devotion that is found in few high schools. Together with Mr. Brucher and Mr. Estes, they have formed a team that fallible in adjusting and maintaining at- tendance, discipline and other problems. is in- YD M. DUANE WEINERT Below: It's more pleasant to smile than give out time, agree Imogene Vincent and Mary Biswell. Cffice Personnel The clearing house for all of Classen is of course the office. From getting admittance slips from Mrs. Biswell to checking in activity money to Mrs. Mat- thews, the office is always ready. Mrs. Matthews is secretary to Mr. Taylor, Mrs. Alley registrar, and Mrs. Biswell and Mrs. Vin- cent attendance officers. Relaxin for a few minutes well E deserved rest are Clara Alley and Laura Matthews. Librar The library is a familiar place to all students, even if he visits room 120 only to find the thin- nest book the night before book reports are due. Under Miss Cockrum the library answers the need and demands of all the school. It is a complete and ever growing source for any field of learning. RETHA WAVE HULET Counselors To gain the confidence and respect of all the boys and girls is an easy task for Mr. Weinert and Miss Hulet. They help every student in any personal problem that may arise in school life as well as advise and coun- sel as to the choice of colleges for each Classenite. EUNICE COCKRUM tK .. ,4 'f2fgQefAis2a.w,,, Building upervision One of the most important jobs in Classen is under the direction of Mr. Shriver. Did you ever wonder what our class- rooms would be like on a cold winter morning, if Nick or Sparks or someone else hadn't been here at 6 A.M. turning on the heat. Mr. Shriver is retiring this year. He has seen the school grow larger and Finer. He remembers when the cafeteria was on the third floor, the office on the second floor and all basketball games were played on the stage in the auditorium. He is an integral part of Classen and can never be replaced. We'1l miss you next year, Hughie. Cafeteria It's said that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Mrs. Gambrell uses that philosophy and the pupils of Classen respond whole-heartedly. Efficiently, all of the women plan and serve nutritious lunches to the students. Mrs. Theodosia Gambrell, in charge of this popular room, will end her stay at Classen this year. Winning a thriller from Northeast 19- 13, we went on to capture the biggest game of our season from our traditional rivals, the Central Cards, to the tune of 13-7. After Central, the Comets easily handled Putnam City 34-6 and slipped by the dangerous Enid Plainsmen, 21-13. By this time, there was no stopping our gridiron gladiators and we ran over Norman 20-6 and Shawnee, 27-0. We closed the season by beating Tulsa Rogers in a thriller, 13-6. All in all, this was a great season for the Comets and a tribute to the quality of our coaches. The only team in the state to knock off the Shooting Stars was the state champion Redskins. This defeat came while the boys were still shaken from the Little Rock setback. Many observers feel, on the strength of our fast ending, that if we had another chance we would have given Cap- itol Hill a run for their money. Leaders DON TUBB gat, 4 VIRGINIA FRISBIE JAN WOODWARD Don Tubb and Tom Owen have done a wonderful job in leading their cheers in front of many enthusiastic audiences. 39 The cheerleaders have one of the most popular honors that can be obtained at Classen. With their pep and cheers they carry on pep assemblies and from those assemblies they take the spirit to the games which is really part of the game. All students have the same opportunity to become cheer- leaders. With about sixty or seventy people trying out they are eliminated down to eighteen. There, eighteen try out in front of the student body, and six are chosen from them. Q ' , gs iss is .. M i dekez Joyce Pritchard ' MISS RETHA WAVE HULET Sponsor SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Stewart Meyers, Joe ' Messenbaugh, Margy Stipes, Tom Murphy. ophomores This year's sophomore class is one of the largest to be en- rolled in Classen. While the seniors of the 1950 class take the most active part, they feel secure in leaving their work to be taken over by the sophomores. If the sophomores increase their knowledge as they progress, and enter into all school ac- tivities, they will be following the good records that have been left them. The officers of this year's class have done a good job in presiding over the limited activities of their group. All the problems that arise day after day are taken care of by our very capable sophomore sponsor, Miss Retha Wave Hulet. The activities that the sophomores may enter are unlim- ited: sports, speech work, journalism, and all of the honor clubs, not forgetting the fine pep clubs which will take in these in- dustrious people. The losing game went to the Shawnee Wolves with a 26-25 setback. But this was KENNETH KENT REGIONALS 49 Central . . 44 Guthrie . . 47 Putnam City . . 19 BA KET State BILL FOERSTER a trifling matter, as the favored Classen Comets easily walked away with the City, Mid-State, .and State Championships. The only tough tangle the Comets had was in the first game with the Northeast Vikings, held at Classen. By freezing the ball for 12 breath-taking minutes, the Comets sneaked out with a 28-25 win. Only one game was postponed, and that being against Central because of the inter- school behavior. Coach Carroll Smelser gave the team his good advice and pep-talks which mainly accounted for the excellent ballhandling l FORREST HOLCRAFT The Season Here 33 john Carroll . . 24 50 Duncan . . 26 50 Lawton . . 32 46 Cushing . . 28 38 Amarillo . 32 28 Northeast . . 26 41 Enid . . 34 45 Shawnee .... 29 33 Norman .... 42 Capitol Hill . . . Captain Melvin Freeman, who made All-City, All-District and A11-State, dis- played good sportsmanship and team- work throughout every game. All-Stater Bob Waller ended the season with a high 15 average per game. But it took the whole Classen squad to put those trophies in the cases. In the regionals the Comets' first victims were the Central Cardinals by a 49-33 margin and Guthrie by a sound edge. With a 47-12 breeze Classen triumphed in the finals over Putnam City. The Comets shot through the State tournament in tradi- tional style. But while the juniors have enjoyed this year of school, it is nothing compared with what is in store when you are a senior. The Juniors have an innumerable list of responsibilities such as, sponsoring the Junior-Senior Prom, to planning many activities, putting on plays and assemblies, helping with the senior graduation and assisting the school with any other vari- ous activities through the year. Classen High has more courses to offer than any other school in the southwest. There are many gym courses, all of which are different. Commercial, science, industrial arts, math- ematics, English, and history courses are but only a few of the ones offered here. In the past year the juniors have had many opportunities to learn, but school was not all work, and they actively partici- pated in the various mixers, capers, and plays. 1. 1, . Under the able guidance of Mrs. Harriet Pulley and Miss Naomi Henricks the girls have enjoyed a successful year. Both team and individual activities have won honors for Classen. Volleyball and fieldball teams played in city tournaments. The volley ball team was beaten in the finals by Britton, the only team to beat Classen this year. Northeast defeated the fieldball team in the semi-finals. Some of the outstanding all-around play- ers are Peggy Garoutte, Loyce Willett, Helen Gard- ner, Martha Madden and Mary Field. Not to be outdone by team sports, the girls in individual sports have also brought honors to Classen. In ping pong Kaye Schmidt took first in the state, while Bobbie Jean Knight captured the state honors for badminton and first in the city for ping pong. Peggy Davis Walked away with the state champion- ship in tennis. Our swimming team also excelled by winning first in state. Some of the girls responsible for this were Martha Hall, Revajean Porter and Norma Donnell, all outstanding swimmers. If some observers ever walk into a seventh hour swimming class, they will find the girls practicing diligently the back, side and breast strokes for form, and the crawl, racing back strokes and racing dives for future swimming meets. Toward the deep end of the pool some of the girls are perfecting their dives, which range from the belly buster to the graceful swan dive. Daily prac- tice, such as this, is why Classen has a fine swimming team. In the sophomore gym classes all types of sports are offered. just this year, a home nursing course was added from which the girls got profitable train- ing for future use. Mrs. Fern Sheets, from the Red Cross, instructed the girls in this course. Some of the things taught were bed making, bathing and care of the patient. There is a physical examination of every girl entering in competitive sports. All girls must pass this test in order to participate in sports events. For- tunately Classen has healthy girls. This, and many other features, are being added to the physical education department, resulting in finer achievements in all phases of sports. Looking back through the year, everyone agrees it was a very enjoyable one, with the exception of Mrs. Pulley's case of mumps. Seniors As all good things must end,-so does the last year in our carefree days at Classen. Never again will we cheer our highschool basketball and football teams to victory or feel sad because they lost. Remem- ber the times we rushed breathlessly to class a few seconds late, only to have a' make-up time slip thrown our way? But most of all, we'll miss those faces we've seen and spoken to for three years, and then the ones we leave behind. With the year's ending comes the Senior Commencement -the memorable ordeal we've been working toward since we can remember. And then there's the Junior-Senior Prom, re- member last year we didn't seem half so excited. D These memories, both good and bad will remain in our hearts forever and even though we may have happier times, there is something about our highschool days that will never be forgotten. 117 HONOR XX BOB ALDRIDGE Classen Award JACQUE BENNETT Classen Award JEWELL GOOD Classen Medal of Honor Classen Award The Classen Medals of Honor are the highest ranking awards given to Classen seniors.
