Ray Webha, veteran Cardinal wingman, converted for the Central team. This pass coming in the closing minutes of play, broke their string of victories that the lighter and shiftier Classenites had piled up against some of the best teams in the central and east parts of the state. The following week the WBoulevard Boys' lost to a much heavier Norman aggregation in a field of mg Greenhaw, Covert, Hogan, Brandon, Seiber, Palmer. mud and water. The Comets then journeyed to Ardmore and defeated the Southern Conference champions to the tune of 26-7. The week following they met the Chickasha team on the home field and avenged last years defeat by a score of 24-19. The long sprints of Sims of Classen and Matthews of Chickasha were the features of the game. Given odds of 7-1, the Capitol Hill Redskins were able to defeat the Comets for the first time in seven years. The UBoulevard Boysn, directed by the able Fred Sims and aided by Brandom's punting were unable to stem the powerful attack but fought gamely only to lose 54-O. The team mastered the difficult Trojan shift, and built a high-geared offense that consisted of a series of cross blocks, spinners, laterals and flat passes that worked against all opponents but Capitol Hill and Norman. The Blue and Gold machine 44 Estlinbaum, Givens, White, and Tennant. amassed a total of 190 points while their enemies scored 152. Fred Sims, diminitive'quarterbacK,took second place in the Mid-State scoring making 108 points, surpassed only by Crusty Barton of Capitol Hill who led with 117 points. The record of 7 victories and 5 defeats is an enviable record for such a light team, considering the short time in which the squad had to learn the new system of playing. p X BASKETBALL THE RECORD 42 HAROLD SKI M MER' MILLER COACH Classen Clinton Classen 42 Cordell Classen 21 Weatherford Classen 44 Clinton Classen 47 Weatherford Classen 24 Capitol Hill Classen 48 Norman Classen 59 Guthrie BAI5IjCk'1.f.i,E '- Classen 14 Central N Classen 40 Norman Classen 41 Enid Classen 51 Capitol Hill Classen 56 Tulsa Classen 26 E1 Reno Classen 55 Enid Classen 21 El Reno Classen 42 Guthrie Classen 58 Central Classen 41 Putnam City Classen 24 Capitol Hill Classen 45 Central Classen 55 Noble Classen 42 Shawnee Classen 54 Ardmore Classen 51 Eastview ggnygqzi Classen 27 Muskogee Classen 54 Blackwell .5 rule .5 4.1 hifi 'M rw iii' ii 'S .1 1 E- E 5 M .Riga WQGE 152115 ff-A 11- ,A ft? lv N34 7 'H 4- if EMR. -A -q--,V k TS' ,1 'C UT , 1' we rF .lHB'FS!DZ! Classen's much-publicized and scintillating championship Comets crashed through to win mid- state,district,bi-district,and state honors. Their brilliant win over Blackwell in the finals of the state tournament climaxed a season that was note- worthy for its upsets of some of the strongest teams in the state. Led by 110 lb. Carroll Smelser, and ably back- ed by teammates such as Dick Krueger,Bob Hunt,Bill Maril, Chad Hensley and Ray Soper, the Comets dis- played a brand of basketball never seen before in the state to complete their season with a record of 26 wins to a single loss. Beginning their season early in December, the Millermen registered quick and decisive wins over Clinton, Cordell and Weatherford.Their only defeat was administered by Central on the Cardinal court in the ninth game of the regular season. They were never stopped after that but the other Central and Capitol Hill games were close. Aff fa' -' 7 'i77'i f'Ej'Ml53f?T'V? Dillon, Arnett, Soper, Cole, and Hensley. Coach Miller was forced to alternate one of the reserves that he was to carry in the district and state meets and was in this manner able to ut- ilize the services of Chad Hensley, Ray Soper, Ce- cil Cole and Mickey Dillon. Carroll Smelser was chosen as captain of the all-state team and two other Comets were chosen as running mates. They were Bob Hunt and Dick Krueger. Bill Maril and Jim Pate,co-captains of the team, did not make the all- state team although Maril was selected as guard on the second team. Jim Pate was out of most of the tournament as the result of a severe charley horse sustained early in the season. Skimmer deserves much credit for his success- ful season. He was forced to take a group of.inex- perienced boys and whip them into shape for the championship trail.
