Gi Gymnastic members compete with locals As the only high school in Clark County to field o gymnostics teom. Clork hod o unique position; oil competition come from private clubs, not other schools. During the Seprember-December season Cooch John Apperson guided his group through severol dual meets ond two mojor competitions sponsored by the Nevodo Women's Gymnostics Association, one held locally for southern teams ond one held in Reno for oil Nevodo competitors. In the Southern Nevodo Meet Pennie Love took first place oil oround. ond Michelle Friend won second place; both girls were competing within their oge groups in Closs IV. In statewide competition in the some categories, June Schell nobbed first ploce oll-oround. ond Michelle Friend ogoin earned the second-place oword. The oll-oround oword signifies the highest total score from four events: floor exercises. voult. balance beam, ond uneven parallel bars. Because gymnastics is not on inter-school athletic activity in Clork County, the sport receives no school funds. Therefore, teom members raised their own money for uniforms, entry fees, ond travel expenses. Cooch Apperson, long o proponent of school gymnostics programs, exploined the situation this woy: ' Gymnostics is o relatively expensive sport. However, the real problem in Clork County is not money — it is o lock of quolified coaches.'- Gymnastics: Dahlto Doumoni. Michelle Ffiend. lino Vortey. Eve Ingenhuert. Suzie Logon.-Juoe Schell.
