With desire and skill JV cagers rebound to a successful year The locker room echoed sounds of exciremenr os the girls' junior vorsify basketball ream got ready for their gomes. The girls worked hord oil season with Improvement over losr year’s record. Observers attributed the change to the quality of players ond the emphasis on skills from first year coach Renee Brown. With on overall win-loss season of 106. the girls did considerably better thon losr year. They hod o lot of spirit, enthusiosm. ond desire. said Cooch Brown. Throughout the seoson LoShoun Jefferson scored enough goals to become overall high scorer. Her talent also helped the team win the gome ogoinst Volley, in which the girls won by one point in a double overtime. Help come to the girls at the end of the seoson in the form of Gidget Corlson. Corlson helped to odd o spork to the reom,” soid Cooch Brown. With o win-loss record of 7-6 in league ploy, three of the girls — Lyshonn Jefferson, Doris Ficklond. ond Jennifer Wesley — moved up to varsity to ploy in the Zone ond Store Tournaments. Varsity Cagers finish with record of 26-6 Local sports writers predicted thot the Clork Chargers, under the experienced cooching of veteran Gory Wheeler, would finish the season number one in the Sunset Division. Some even went os for os predicting o stote chompionship for the Chargers. These predictions were based on the ployers' height, experience, ond defensive obility. The Chargers did finish first in their division, thereby gaining on outomotic berth in the stote tournoment. In Zone competition Clork defeated Gormon but fell to Volley in the chompionship gome. Stote proved to be o remotch of the zone tourney. Traveling to Reno. Clork defeated Douglos High School, ranked third in the North. They then handed Gormon their fourth defeat of the season to bring them ogoinst Volley for the title. The Chompionship gome wos o close march which ended 45-45, forcing overtime ploy in which the Chargers held total control of the boll, but foiled to score. Volley controlled the tip in the second overtime period ond monoged to sink o bosket. A highly contested coll in the lost few seconds left both ployers ond spectotors questioning the outcome, but Clork rook the loss. 45-47. Clork relied heavily on its mon-to-mon defense ond occasionally olrernoted between o two-three ond one-three-one zone defenses to keep their opposition off balance. Excellent defensive ployers included Orion Drown, Bruce Goitor. Michoel Thrower, ond Ricky Henry. The team's offensive strategies included o vorio-tion of UCLA's high-post offense ogoinst their opponents mon-ro-mon defense. Clork olso relied on o porienr zone offense thot, through good team passing, exploited the weaknesses of their opponents defenses. Also effective offensively for the Chargers wos o new zone-press offense thot ottocked the full court press defense of their opponents. Strong offensive ployers included Bruce Goitor, Mork Dixon, Scott Scarborough, ond Averion Porrish. The Glendora Tournoment in Southern Californio proved to be o valuoble experience for the team. The Chargers fored well, winning three out of four gomes, to place third omong sixteen teams. Their second holiday outing, the Nike Holidoy Tournoment, brought disappointment to the reom with o loss to Colvert Hall, ranked first nationally, ond on unexpected defeot from Roncho in the consolotion brocket. Three of the teom's key ployers were rhree-yeor lettermen, Bruce Goitor, Mork Dixon, ond Orion Brown. All three hove been on the Varsity squod since their sophomore yeor. Other ployers thot contributed to the teom's success were Steve Justice. Ricky Henry. Averion Porrish. Scott Scarborough. Jeff Knesh. Michoel Thrower. Rodney Thomos. Dereck Woshingron. ond Ronnie Holl. Assistant Cooch John Nelson commented on the teom, “This is the third reom I've coached in Los Vegos. ond it's the best group of guys I've ever dealt with. All the members cooperate with each other, ploy well, ond mointoin o strong defensive gome. 140 Varsity Basketball
