CHS cagers combine skill, talent, teamwork fo r winning season Clark High's varsity basketball team of 1980-81 proved to be one of the most powerful, talented teams in the school's history. Pre-season predictions had given the advantage to Clark. One of the main reasons cited was 6'10 senior Duane Kendall, who headed up the experienced Charger front line. Providing extra offensive punch along with Kendall were juniors Mark Dixon and Bruce Gaitor. However. Clark upheld its tradition of strong defensive play with junior Brian Brown and seniors Jeff Wilson. Kenny Scott and Randy Plentzas providing strong pressure throughout the season. Senior Steve Thomas, juniors Steve Justice. Phil Lipka. and Rodney Thomas, and sophomore Ricky Paulson were the remaining players of this year's team. Two winter vacation tournaments served as practice exercise. While not counting on their season record, the competition tested the Chargers' skill against worthy opponents. The first Charger outing of the holiday season was the Carson Capital Classic December 18-20. The squad finished in second place with a 2-1 record, beating both Reno (79-51) and Box Elder (70-53). but losing to Carson City (63-70) in their third game. Clark did noticeably well in the second tournament. the Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic December 26-30. finishing in fourth place among a field of some of the best squads from not only Southern Nevada, but also from around the country. After beating Boise. Idaho's. Capital High (42-32). the Chargers suffered a disappointing loss in their second game of the tournament by falling to Pennsylvania's Union-town High (52-56). The team recovered by coming up on top of their next two games against Rhode Island s Providence (65-51) and Seattle. Washington's. Mercer Island (80-71). CHS was the second finisher of the Southern Nevada schools: Rancho High took second place overall. Head Coach Gary Wheeler stated that the team's strong points were their defensive teamwork and balanced scoring abilities. He did not officially state any weak points, although he frequently complained of his team's not playing at their full potential. He considered teamwork as the basic game plan. Wheeler commented that his players were talented and good challengers for the state basketball title.” Vorsity Bosketboll 143
