Gridders finish 5-4; players grow weary as big games are lost Although the varsity football team had a winning season, it was a disappointing year for the players. Through their first six games, the team was in first place with a 5-1 record. Their seventh game was against Gorman, and it was this game that really ended the Chargers' year. Gorman beat Clark 48-10. ending all hopes of going to state. The game was close throughout most of the first half: with approximately four minutes to go in the half, the score was 7-3 in favor of Gorman. When the half ended, it was 35-3. 8efore the Gorman game, the team played good football. In the season opener, it was an overtime victory against Western. 14-7. Steve George scored the winning touchdown. In the second game Clark defeated a scrappy Basic team 21-0. Steve George. Mike Cardarelli. and Jeff Wilson all scored touchdowns. Against Eldorado, the Charger defense shut out the opponent for the second straight week, winning 13-0. The game's leading scorer was Blair Brooks, kicking two field goals and an extra point for seven points. The fourth game was a heartbreaking 7-3 loss to the Rancho Rams. The defense fought off repeated Rancho scoring opportunities, but the Rams finally scored with about a minute to play. Clark's only score came on a 45 yard field goal by Blair Brooks. The following week, the winning ways returned, as Clark defeated Vegas 21-12. Vegas scored first, but the offense got going and scored 21 points in the second quarter. In the conference opener. Clark defeated Bonanza in the last minute. Blair Brooks kicked a 27-yard field goal with 58 seconds left to give the team a 10-7 victory. After these first six games. Clark's defense was the toughest in the city, allowing only 5.5 points per game. The last three games were a nightmare. The Gorman loss was followed by two scoreless defeats, one at the hands of Chaparral and the other against Valley. These final three losses dropped the season's record to five wins and four losses. In conference play Clark finished with one win and three losses. This season was Coach Richard Whitehead's last year of coaching. He announced his retirement to the team at half time of the Gorman game. Coach Whitehead had been the football coach for the past ten years: in those ten years he guided Clark to two state championships, and’he had a lifetime record of 63 wins. 28 losses, and 2 ties. Coach Whitehead always gave something extra for Clark. We were not loaded with talent. said White-head. I think we did a good job with what we had. he added. Steve George was the most valuable player. He led the team in rushing yardage and was described by Coach Whitehead as one of the best backs in the city. 120 Varsity Football ◄ ■
