For this reason El Espiritu de 1959 is dedicated to Mr. Leonard Cohn and Mr. Harold Lynn the beloved coaches of Claremonts football team and respected teachers of teamwork and fair-play both on and off the field. ,41 Directory ADMINISTRATION CTI ASSFS ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISING 126 M 6 ., ., ., . As I look back on it naw, it doesn't seem like such a remember when all eleven of us gathered together last summer to plan the page layout before .loan Vincent and Lynn Eve Martin were with us then but had to drop out after school started. We were all sorry to see them go, but academics must come first. , - With the beginning of school we started the dummy, a complete design of the book. The whole staff went over every page carefully, keeping in mind our goals of balance, co-ordination, and, above all, striking simplicity. Mr. Thomas, our representative from Yearbooks Incorporated, Monrovia, helped us in countless ways, but we most ap- preciate his mature iudgment and constructive criticism in this all-important task. Once we were satisfied with every page, we tackled the portrait section. Rounding up over 300 students to have their pictures taken is quite a iob even for our able Special Photography Editor, Diane Tracy. She did it, though, and come deadline time, we had all the portraits ready to send in. We were even early! Diane also handled the baby pictures, candids, and advertising pictures with the same skill. That wasn't our first deadline however: we had a new and very important one on November 15, a color dead- line. The copy, pictures, and art work for all pages with color on them had to be in. I shudder to think what we would have done without Ken Fleming and l'laral Larsen. We designed the pages, but Ken did the fascinating draw- ings, and Mr. Larsen took those breath-takigtg photographs. On the whole, things ran quite smoothly, with increased activity near deadlines. Loretta Thomas, Chief Photog- raphy Editor, with the help of her assistant, Coren Elder, would start things by calling Mr. Larsen lor his wife, who was a great helpl and having him come to this or that event. He would send them proofs of all pictures, and they would select the proper ones, mark the correct sizes on them, and give them back to him to be printed. When the final prints arrived, they were tumed over to Betti Haas. Betti, as Copy Editor, and Marilyn Eley, her assistant, would ident all the pictures. l guess everyone on both the annual and Wdfpacket staffs, along with many others, helped do this iob at some time or another. All annual members wrote copy: even Mrs. Noble pitched in. We are especially grateful, though, to Doug Adair and Jerry Kelly, Wolfpacket members, for helping us so much with the sports section. Then came the never-ending iob of typing up the idents, copy, arid witty sayings. This iob fell almost solely to Betti and Marilyn. After Barbara Fleming, the Accuracy Advisor, and at least two others had gone over the copy, it was turned over to our self-sacrificing advisor, Mrs. Noble, who checked it, in relation to the pictures, for spelling, punctuation, composi- tion, and accuracy. This wasn't her only Iob however. Her inspiration, guidance, and sympathetic tolerance were things we really needed. As the final deadline approached, we faced our last big iob, advertising. The whole staff went out gathering ads under the directions of Suzie Johnson, Advertising Manager. After it was all brought in, Gail Sage took over as Manager to lay out the section and see to it that everything was organized properly. lt's sad for me to realize that it's all over now. We had our troubles and rough spots, but we've loved being a part of it. Most important, we have all done our best, and we feel that it is a good iob. We are proud to present this book to you.
