ALMA MATER Churchland High, Through all the ages, Y e will loyal be. By thy guidance we shall prosper, And our faith in thee, Strong in spirit Striving forward W e as students stand. Hail to thee, Oh Churchland High School Best in all the land. The PRESENTED SENIOR OF CHURCHLAND NORFOLK COUNTY Trucker BY THE THE HIGH SCHOOL VIRGINIA Ho. i i OJTH PUBLIC LIBRARlf PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA ' I Foreword . . . Here we again commemorate our Alma Mater. Serene in her beauty, erect and staunch, she stands against the blue sky, with ancient trees surrounding. But more significant to us than any beauty are the spiritual values and opportunities that have come to us in our years with her. We shall always cherish the good fellowship of the students of Churchland; their memory will remain with us throughout the passing years. We shall long cherish the many contributions to our welfare made by each member of the faculty. Again, we shall cherish the tradi- tions of fidelity and loyal allegiance which we have not only received but also learned to give. All these memories of you, O Churchland, are treasured in this small book which, throughout the coming years, will grow more precious to us, as we remember your gifts and your ideals! They have proved themselves to be worthy citizens. Many years have passed since that sad night when they, bursting with both pride and sorrow, received their diplomas. Through the knowledge gained at dear old Churchland, they have chosen the right paths in life. Now, you have only to glance at a newspaper and read of these outstanding people, so prominent have they become — even their sponsor, Miss Fredrika Butt, is a famous woman columnist on the New York Times! While thumbing through her paper recently, I read an article concerning the fine deeds ot Dickie Bruckse and Jimmie Baucom, who hold very high positions in the U. S. Army. Serving our country in the Navy are David Lewis and James Willis, with rank of Lt. Commander. If you happen to be interested in sports, then you can turn, as I did, to the sports page and find something on this order: “Peggy Cooper was recently voted most valuable player for the All-American Red Heads.” Also on the sports page you might read something ot the expert managing of the “Red Heads” by Peggy Pruitt. Holding down a guard position for them is that blonde bombshell, Verna Mills. Not so long ago an article caught my eye which contained the report that Jerry Harris and the former Carol Cartwright were vacationing at Miami Beach, after which Jerry will resume his coaching duties at the University of Kentucky. On the front page of today’s paper is a picture of Howard Sivils, Governor of our beloved state of Virginia. He attended the Inaugural Ball accompanied by his wife, the former Jo Anne McCurry. In the parade, on the day ot the inauguration, was Miss Joyce Fleshman, chosen to represent our state on account of her beauty. An account of Dickie Ehrhart’s celebration of the recent completion of the Churchland bridge also caught my attention. He celebrated with a weekend party at his home. His lovely wife, the former Jeanne Hagwood, served as hostess. Among the guests was that famous historian, Tommy Meads, who is now running in competition with Miss Massey. Jane Kay Askew, charming bubble dancer, pro- vided entertainment for the guests. Rebecca Vaughn and Eddie Rogers, star reporters for the New York Times, were covering the party. Also celebrating over the weekend were those prominent cosmetic manufacturers, Patsy Saunders and Arlene McDonald, who introduced their new face powder known as “Black-Face.” That well-known dare devil of the air, Joe Dowson, was their honored guest. Lois Griffin was there also, sporting her three diamonds. Escorting her was Hollywood’s most sought after bachelor, Wayne Foster. On the page devoted to the entertainment world, I read where Mary Ellen Keirn in now the featured singer at the Swan Club. Donald McCants has his own band in which Bob Hagwood plays a clarinet. They are known as “McCants’ Melody Maids.” Aha! Here’s the outcome of the voting cast by the world’s greatest model critics. They have chosen as America’s number one model of the year, Miss Barbara Oldfield. At another voting poll, Ann Fitch has been selected as Best-Dressed Woman of the Year. She has become one of the most prominent women of the social world. Gracious! Here’s a full page advertisement for Jack Beaver’s Bakery Shop, famous all over the U. S. for its delicious pastries. There are pictures of the Senior Class Prophecy — Continued executives along with the ad. His secretary is Joyce Cannady, Benny Jones is the prominent Vice-President, and Murry Myrick is the business manager of this thriving establishment. The two managing cooks of Mr. Beaver’s bakery are the Misses Emily Owens and Kitty Bruckse. Here I see an article in which famous medical authorities are praising Hope Gray for her wonderful work in the field of welfare nursing. Marcella Hassell has also gained recognition for her splendid work in this field. Oh! and here I read where the play “Romeo and Juliet” is starting its second year of prosperity on Broadway with that well-known Shakespearian actress, Miss Kay Hight. On the next page, I read of the gala opening of Bill Carter’s new restaurant featuring Bar-B-Q as his specialty. Attending the opening are such notable figures as Miss Janice Smith, who has just completed her book entitled “Pathway to Knowledge”, Jimmy Shearin, Esquire s leading illustrator, Linwood Brett, Hollywood’s foremost comedian, and Elizabeth Neave, noted woman detective. Oh! Well, I guess Eve just about read the whole newspaper. Let’s see what’s of interest in the latest Strife Magazine. If you happen to look on the page where the staff of the magazine is listed, you’ll see two members of the class of ’49 who hold positions of high esteem. Head- ing the list as editor is that worthy and capable leader, Jean Dawson. Serving as chief of the Domestic News Service is Katherine Miller. My, here’s a picture of Elva Boyd receiving the National Art Award for her achievements in Modern Art. As I venture further into the pages of Strife , I find a very interesting write-up about that successful black-face comedian, Blaine Bennett. There are many pictures of him and his wife, the former Jewell Oglesby. Well, if here isn’t a picture of Aline Nuckols! Strife has chosen her as “The Ideal Housewife.” I am speaking of the Aline Cherry as you knew her in ’49. That MISS has been a MRS. for a long time now. Gorman Fleming has just won an academy award for being Hollywood’s most ardent lover. He was presented the Oscar for his performance in “Love Me Little, Love Me Big.” Here is an article on Kinglin Brothers’ newly organized circus. Bobby Bailey is the jovial Master of Ceremonies. They are billing Sam Gilmore as a fearless lion-tamer. Betty Jo Johnson is the star trapeze artist. My, what’s this? George Whitley, now owner of the Brownhound Bus Line, has just been married. Dear old George! All his dreams have come true. Edward English has a large ad on the next page for his famous Bolognial Stores. He has really risen to success. Featured among the items in his ad is the new gold tipped candy cigarette “for the kiddies” called “Baleigh 309,” introduced by Miss Barbara Hunt. And last, but not least, I come to an advertisment of Nancy Ferguson’s Open Air Market. It is rated as the most modernly equipped market in the country. Yes, the notable achievements of these members of the Class of ’49 are known to all the world. How proud their former teachers must be of them! They claim Churchland High School as their inspiration and guide. May she ever remember them with all love and esteem, as they remember her! Norfolk County Champions The Churchland Truckers battled their way to their first football championship in many years. Winning five of their eight games, the Truckers won three of them in Norfolk County competition which gave them the title of Norfolk County Champions. COACH JOSEPH PAW LOW SKI R CHA RD BRUCK5E PA V D L EW 5 Norfolk County Champions HARR S The Churchland Truckers had a very favorable season, winning eight out of fifteen games. Although they were not able to compete in the tournament, they won the last game of the season by defeating Deep Creek, which classified them as the Norfolk County Group II Basketball League Champions. SCORING STATISTICS Harris 202 Sivils 136 Ehrhart 64 Bruckse 52 Lewis 22 Managers: Shearin, Robinson, Matthews GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ADAMS The spirits were high for many of the girls of Church- land that 18th day of November, 1948. That was the day they were to compete with others in the school to see if they would be chosen to represent the “Church- land Girls” in basketball for the coming season. Finally, the team was picked. With only two returning lettermen back from the previous year, it was easy to see the difficulties Miss Van Dyck and the girls were up against, as far as ex- perienced players were concerned. Although this was a “strike” against them, they were far from giving up. Practicing steadily, day after day, the girls never lost that spark of eagerness with which they had started. This year’s squad had many lower classmen on it, who show possibilities for great development. The ex- perience they have gained this year, in those games in which they played, will prove invaluable next year. The season was marked by some victories and some defeats, but the girls ended up the year a well-integrated and vastly improved group. Our first team, composed of Shirley Crawford, Dorothy Adams, Carol Cartwright, Peggy Cooper, Aline Cherry, Verna Mills, and the other nine girls who so nicely backed them up, deserve much praise for a very creditable season. io oo BASKETBALL SCORES Church land Opponents 12 . . Softball Team Spring is here! The bats are swinging and the balls are flying! Taped-up fingers and ankles, and sore, aching muscles are good signs that softball is now in full swing. For the second consecutive year the Churchland girls are fielding a highly-spirited softball team. It power can equal spirit, the girls at Churchland will turn out a mighty team. With the experience and help of five returning lettermen, and under the leadership of Captain Mills, Coach YanDyck is looking forward to a very successful season.
