Q42 JWA I 1 I I M 'F JAMES P'IcDANIEL5 PETTT STONE iefktt simon HISTORY Chapter I We Arrive at Churchland The first part of September, 1945, in the very middle of the hurricane, a band of very young people tcalled Rats by their eldersl met together for the first time at Churchland High School. Some came from Westhaven and West Norfolk cmd some were from Churchland Grammar School. Two Homerooms were put in the grammar grade building tmaking us feel as though we were still grade-schoolersl under the leadership of Mrs. Weeks and Mrs. Gwynn. The other one stayed with the high school with Miss Beale as teacher. Then came the inevitable-Initiation-. For two weeks we poor freshmen lived in fear of the older classmen and our lives. Rat, written with lipstick, was on all foreheads. Some of our boys began to play football and basketball, later to become the stars. How we did study for our 'final exams! The last day school! Hurrah! We were no longer Freshman but Sopho- mores, anti we gladly hurried to our vacations. Chapter II We Return as Sophomores The next September we returned to dear old C. H. S., as respectful students. This time all the sophomores were in the grammar school building. We were still disappointed, but at least we had our classes in the high school building. We were all filled with plenty of school spirit as we watched the members of our class on the football team. After football season came the excitement of waiting for Christmas. All the team spirit tumed into Christmas spirit. When the Christmas Holidays were over we returned to school to face suddenly the thought of mid-term exams. The first half of the year had just flown by and all of us had to get down and study hard. Finally the dreaded days came, but most of us came through with flying colors. At last, Spring! Dances! Invitations to clubs! Exams! We all came through to return as Iuniors the next fall!! We had finally become important enough to belong! Chapter III Our Iunior Year At Last! Now we were upper classmen! School opened with a bang with everyone running around like mad trying to get their schedules straight! We were still in the grammar school building with Mrs. Gwynn and a new homeroom teach- er, Mrs. Monroe. Immediately we began to make plans for the Iunior-Senior. Everyone with a free period began drawing for the decorations. The Treasurer collected the dues and soon everything was going smoothly. The football team got better! More of Iuniors became players and stars. We beat Alexander Park, but lost to Cradockl Christmas rolled around again and everything was in preparation. The Art Class drew Christmas pictures for the windows in the hall and all the class- rooms were decorated. ln Ianuary, we continued our plans for the Ir.-Sr. Bright colored paper was hung across the ceiling. Dutch scenes were drawn about the walls and the favors were decorated with a Dutch boy and girl. A few weeks later school closed for the summer. Most of us passed all courses, and left school as high and mighty Seniors. Chapter IV The Senior Class of '48 Hurrah!! We returned to Churchland as proud Seniors! At long last we have our homerooms in the high school building. Everyone in the Class went around school holding out their hand and saying, See what l've got? Ain't it purty? This was when we got our class rings. Then came football season, and with a new coach our hopes were high. We all attended as many games as possible and were really thrilled to watch our boys play. The team didn't always end up on top, but they were still tops with us. This was the year we tied Cradockll Soon, it was Christmas and we were all filled with the Spirit of the Season. On the 18th of December the annual Christmas Dance was given in the gym. It was gayly decorated with crepe paper and a huge tree at one end of the room. Everybody spent a most pleasant evening. Basketball season was in full swing when we returned after the holidays. The boys played a season of grand games. For awhile we thought we were in Hollywood! The Senior Class pictures were taken and all of them looked just like movie stars! Snow! Snow! Snow! This was the year ot the Big Blizzards. School had to close not once, but twice! CA rare thing in these partsl. It kept us home from school, but not from mischief in the snow. We were in our second childhood there, but we remembered our dignity when we came back and tried our abilities as Bemhardts and Barrymores in the Senior Class play, The Mad Hatters . After the play came the Ir.-Sr. on May 7th. Everyone was excited but a little sad, for it was our last school dance. We were most enjoyably enter- tained, and we'll never forget that night. The next Friday Baby Day was held, and then just before exams we went to the Senior Class Banquet. The Class prophecy was read and small gifts were given to each member of the class. Then came the long awaited, but dreaded by some, Day-Graduation! The Class numbered about 65, and we all proudly, but sadly, received our diplomas from Mr. Beck on Iune 8th. So. ended the life of the Senior Class of 1948. We will always remember each other and continue to hold high in our memories our life at Churchland.
