rllec iiiiii I' iiii 5 . .lea Merril Grant, Superintendent of Tucson Unified School District 111, stepped down after 5V2 years the position with the state's largest school district. Grant was under pub- lic scrutiny and criticism from a com- munity group known as the Coalition for Educational Excellence. In June Grant will be leaving his position to spend more time with his family. A temporary assignment for Grant as special assistant to the school board includes such duties as working with the legislature and the Districtfs business community. Grant has been credited with the desegregation of TUSD schools, improving education- al standards, and successfully facing a tight budget without making major program cuts. Deputy Superintendent Doro- thy Magett was named interim su- perintendent on February 12th. She was supported by many black com- munity leaders and educators. Her credentials include a doctorate in education from Northwestern Uni- versity and work in Seattle Public Schools as Assistant Superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Eight year-old Vicki Lynn Hoskinson was abducted on North Romero and Wetmore Monday afternoon Sept. 17 after mailing a letter at a Circle K lo- cated near her home. More than 35 volunteers from three agencies searched the area around Vicki's home for any possible clues to her disappear- ance. Vicki's Uncle Rick Trimmer offered 815,000 in family savings as a reward to her finder. In ad- dition, 88-crime reward for in- formation leading to Vicki's whereabouts, increased 315,000 more than the maximum, mak- ing the full reward 325,000 Frank Jarvis Atwood, 28, has been charged with kidnapping and is awaiting trial in the Pima County Jail. Over 500 students from Homer Davis Elementary met in the school courtyard to read tri- butes to Vicki Lynn in a special ceremony where a palo verde tree was planted in her honor.
