rllec iiiiii I' iiii 5 . .lea Merril Grant, Superintendent of Tucson Unified School District 111, stepped down after 5V2 years the position with the state's largest school district. Grant was under pub- lic scrutiny and criticism from a com- munity group known as the Coalition for Educational Excellence. In June Grant will be leaving his position to spend more time with his family. A temporary assignment for Grant as special assistant to the school board includes such duties as working with the legislature and the Districtfs business community. Grant has been credited with the desegregation of TUSD schools, improving education- al standards, and successfully facing a tight budget without making major program cuts. Deputy Superintendent Doro- thy Magett was named interim su- perintendent on February 12th. She was supported by many black com- munity leaders and educators. Her credentials include a doctorate in education from Northwestern Uni- versity and work in Seattle Public Schools as Assistant Superintendent for curriculum and instruction. : . 5 : I The 1984 Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles, Cali- fornia. The Olympics are held once every 4 years and different countries host the games. People from many countries come to- gether in peace to observe and participate in friendly competi- tion. You could hear cries ofjoy, see heroes, smell the aroma of the food being sold and be moved deeply by the events. One of the most memorable gold medal awards at the 1984 Winter Olympics was that of Mary Lou Retton's. She became the first American woman to win a gold medal in the women's all- around gymnastics competition. Ms. Retton captured the hearts of her audiences with her charm and playful style. By Di Lane 1 Current Events The Statue of Liberty is un- dergoing a restoration after 100 years of serving as a beacon for immigrants in the New York harbor. Reconstruction started after donations were made by citizens and businesses. She is a symbol of America, its spirit, hope, freedom and liberty. May the soul of America be reflected in the glow of her torch. By Jinnelle Dittbenner Baby Fae, her real name known only to her doctors and parents, became the first to re- ceive an animal heart trans- plant. The walnut-sized heart of a seven month old baboon was inserted into Baby Fae at Loma Linda University Medical Cen- ter. The operation was very con- troversial causing attacks by animal lovers and medical ethi- cists. Yet, when Baby Fae's pic- ture was televised around the world her story touched every- one. Then, 21 days after the op- eration, Baby Fae gave in and died of massive kidney failure.
