Assembly Highlight The goal of the Student Council was to provide the best assemblies and organize the Student Council to the best of their capabilities. Student Body President Ve- ronica Fields decided her personal goals were to get involved in Student Council, take action, and to stop complaining about things. The sports were covered in seasonal as- semblies which were held in the amphith- eater and the auditorium. Veronica stated, When we planned the assemblies we brainstormed, prioritized, and listened to everyone's opinion. The administration, however, had final approval of all plans. 8 E Taking Action 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist - Boxer Paul Gonzalez appears as a guest speaker on campus Nov. 7 during a 6th period assembly. The Junior assembly covered plans for fund raisers, graduation and col- lege plans. The guest speaker Mr. Ira Lackow, Junior Class advisor, intro- duced 1986 class representative Kelly Olms. : . 5 : I The 1984 Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles, Cali- fornia. The Olympics are held once every 4 years and different countries host the games. People from many countries come to- gether in peace to observe and participate in friendly competi- tion. You could hear cries ofjoy, see heroes, smell the aroma of the food being sold and be moved deeply by the events. One of the most memorable gold medal awards at the 1984 Winter Olympics was that of Mary Lou Retton's. She became the first American woman to win a gold medal in the women's all- around gymnastics competition. Ms. Retton captured the hearts of her audiences with her charm and playful style. Detroit outfielder Kirk Gibson contributed much to the team's victory by hitting two homers and driving in five runs. Ethiopia's people faced grief and famine this year which was worse than the great depression in America during the 1930's. Documentaries in England and projects in America encouraged people to feed the world by sending money and food to that country. By Di Lane 1 Current Events The Statue of Liberty is un- dergoing a restoration after 100 years of serving as a beacon for immigrants in the New York harbor. Reconstruction started after donations were made by citizens and businesses. She is a symbol of America, its spirit, hope, freedom and liberty. May the soul of America be reflected in the glow of her torch. By Jinnelle Dittbenner Baby Fae, her real name known only to her doctors and parents, became the first to re- ceive an animal heart trans- plant. The walnut-sized heart of a seven month old baboon was inserted into Baby Fae at Loma Linda University Medical Cen- ter. The operation was very con- troversial causing attacks by animal lovers and medical ethi- cists. Yet, when Baby Fae's pic- ture was televised around the world her story touched every- one. Then, 21 days after the op- eration, Baby Fae gave in and died of massive kidney failure.
