Combining great new talent with last year's strong experienced players JV Hang Tough ., M., Coach Bill Sampson came up with the best JV record in the past three years. He emphasized the team's strength in communication, team ef- fort and hitting to achieve a 6 win - 6 loss season record. The team im- proved in the areas of spiking, serving, defense and competitiveness. The is girls began practice two weeks before school started and several members attended Volleyball camps. Coach Sampson stated, I was very happy with the way skills improved and the development of a competitive attitude. We were only 'out' of one or two matches the entire season. The disappointments were not winning those close matches. The Sophomore returnees were Cristina Cuestas, Diane Hoffman and Lori Nelson. Cross Country Moves Boys cross country had a difficult sea- son because of the shortage of exper- ienced runners, but they were able to take 9th in the Divisionals out of 14 teams. They defeated Pueblo, Tucson High, Salpointe, Catalina, and Buena. They could have beaten Rincon and Santa Rita if it were not for injuries and illnesses. This was a rebuilding year with a lot of new runners at the start of the season. Sahuaro won State Champion- ship in the playoffs. The toughest run- ners to compete against were SunnySide, Palo Verde and Sahuaro. Coach Dick Browning, 14 year vet- eran stated that his runners learned a lot, improved, and developed their skills. The team met everyday after school since Aug. 20th. The team Worked con- cession stands at the football games and had an annual Candy Sale to raise funds. Basically, all the runners are returning next year. This year the experienced runners were: CSeniorsJ Julio Freire and Shawn Nothestein, CJuniorJ Manny Freire, and fSophomoreJ Carlos Nava. Other team members were Hector Soto, Albert Avila, David Dahlen, Brad McKenzie and Robert Peterson. By Letty Reyes The Girls cross country team, coached by Ms. Yvonne Clay, had a successful season. Although faced with many inex- perienced runners and basic rebuilding problems, the squad showed a willing- ness to work hard. The team practiced from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, con- ditioning their bodies to take on the grueling tasks that lay before them. The team consisted of competitors. arsity Volleyball Sets Although Varsity's season ended with three wins and thirteen losses, Coach Joel Kooyers felt the team should be very strong next year be- cause of the many strong hitters and blockers who will be returning. They may possibly win state next year. The team's goal was to work as a close knit unit and really learn to care about each other on and off the court. There will also be four strong new- comers - Juniors Diane Hoffman, Lori Nelson, Chris Cuestas, and Sherri Schroder. Junior Jennifer Cook showed her determination by overcoming an an- kle injury that would have put some- one else out for the whole season. Jen- nifer's cast came off a week after her injury and she was back on the courts playing the position of setter-hitter. The coach started his career five years ago. He found the sport exciting and would love to teach at Cholla be- cause there would be more communi- cations with the team members on a daily basis. He taught Free Enterprise and American Government at Pueblo High School. Coach Kooyers stated, Coaching at Cholla is a great way to end the day. Team members included seniors Lorraine Fisher, and Casandra Qui- huis. Juniors were Janine Churley, Lisa Nelson, Rose Archuleta, Sabra Wright, Jennifer Cook, Kelly Olms, Judy Teft and Annette Warrior. Sophomores were Gina Grijalva and Michelle Bustamante. Junior Jennifer Cook stated, A setter-hitter is like a spiker, we have a super team and if we really want it, we'll go for it, said Jennifer.
